Angels lose to the Mets Again

The Angels had another day in NY. Another day hoping to not blow it. Good luck with that. Then again it is the Mets. They are known for blowing things as well. Hmmm…

Who was pitching anyway? Hendricks. Well he went 4 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits striking out 2 and walking 1. Better hope the offense shows up and the bullpen. And the defense…

2k. That’s not gonna cut it

Highlighted Recap

The Angels scored first in the first- nope! Thrown out at home.

Oh come ON!

They did score first in the 2nd though with a BOMB out to left.

1-0 Angels

In the bottom of the inning Adell shows that gold glove (nominee) ability with a great running catch!

D-Fence

The defense continued in the 4th with Ward getting an outfield assist at 1B to get the double play!

Maybe keep Ward?

Nolan drove in the 2nd run of the game with a double in the 5th!

2-0 Angels

The happiness was short lived, however, as Hendricks proceeded to give up a 2 run blast after WALKING A BATTER in the 5th.

Tied game

And it got worse with another run later in the inning.

3-2 Mets

The Angels defense made back to back errors in the 7th but didn’t allow any more runs. Somehow. But the Angels couldn’t score either and lose 3-2.

Upcoming

One more in NY and then back home for a long homestead. 13 straight home games! And CtPG will be at the Big A on Saturday August 2nd. Sign up if you want to sit with us!

Per the game thread. It’s as bad as we thought. The high leverage stats mask Trouty’s futility in clutch late and close situations. We’d literally be better off with anyone on the team up in the clutch.

Mike Trout’s line in “late and close” situations the past two seasons:

2025 : 6-50, .515 OPS
2024: 1-15, .530 OPS

Collective .111 batting average 😢

I’ve been trying to figure out how to find this info. Thanks for posting.
I wonder how his stats in these type of situations are for his entire career. I know one thing: you won’t see negative stats on any Angels broadcast when it comes to Trout.

Heck, when Joe Maddon was manager, in the preseason, he brought up the possibility of Trout moving to LF, with Brandon Marsh in CF, to save wear and tear for Mike.
Somehow, after that day, there was total silence (my guess: Trout shut down that talk).

Of course, Mookie Betts (a Gold Glove winning outfielder, and World Series winner) had no issues moving to SS, to help his team.

Angels bullpen game tomorrow. Burke first.

TBF though, the last Angels bullpen game, they did relatively well

So we don’t even have someone to call.up and pitch 5 innings? what would we have done if lost someone to an injury?

Newman then becomes the starting pitcher.

One thing we know is that it’s not like the Angels need three starting pitchers, a closer, a third baseman and another outfielder in the offseason, so no need to chase after farm depth at the deadline this year.

It also explains not going after collegiate pitching and positional players in this year’s draft. Given the emergence of 3-5 core players, this is the least needful team in years.

Man. I kinda like the Mets. I really like the idea of them stomping the Doyers in October. But I would like them to stop beating the Angels now.

Trout, Ward, Adell & Moncada went a collective 1-16 (Single by Trout) with one walk (Ward) and 7 K’s.

That is why we lost.

Had Nolan not hesitated, had a better read, or just had a tad bit more speed on that Trout single, score would have been tied

Well the speed isn’t ever improving. I’m a huge Shanuel fan but dude wears concrete cleats. He’s gonna be on base a lot. To me work with what you got. He should be a hard stop at 3rd on any play where there even a chance at the plate cause he’s gonna be out almost every time. His value is in other places

Fair enough. But more than the speed, I think Nolan just had a bad read there. There’s no way that ball is even on track for being caught (it was too low), nor would Soto (of all people) even lay out for that. That 1-2 second hesitation is the difference between getting his hand on the base and scoring vs. getting tagged out.

Agreed. Mine should have been its own post not a reply to you as I wasn’t disagreeing with anything you said. Lord knows base running and 3rd base coaching decisions are their own animal of a problem in general

Tanner Scott has “left elbow inflammation.” We all know what that means…

Maybe the Doyers get desperate for arms and pull the trigger on a reunion with their former closer.

Package Ty Anderson & Kenley Jansen (even though I like the latter quite a bit)…

Do you think Philly might be interested in Tyler Anderson to replace Suarez?

Maybe. Anderson can eat some innings during the dog days and they have a decent offense to support him.

Injuries on contenders will inflate the market value of Ty Anderson & Jansen .

I don’t think TA has very much value tbh

He’s not a playoff pitcher to be sure but, he can eat innings over the past 2 months whilst other guys are mending.

I’d take almost anything at this point.

To your larger point, we don’t have that many chips of value apart from Ward & Jansen.

No interesting chips to sell really, other than Ward, and Jansen is really on the second-tier of “if so and so isn’t available, sure I’ll take him” kind of trade chip”. But I wonder if Perry will pull the unusual “sell” strategy – selling off a young controllable player for another one, or if lucky, for multiple prospects. That Marsh for O’Hoppe trade was a surprise for sure.

We need to trade some guys. I am all about that. But I kinda hope we don’t trade a young controllable guy. Their chemistry seems really good to me. Maybe trade Detmers?

Other than he is pretty awful – no. I realize he has pitched better this year but if I was Philly I would have no faith.

Are we talking about the same pitcher?!? One who has a 2.66 ERA and 1.15 WHIP this season. And who has a career 3.33 ERA and 1.27 WHIP?!

Sure, he was awful against the Angels, but he had a 10-start stretch early this season of just giving up 1.20 ERA. And that’s why the Phillies were up in arms over him getting passed for the shiny new kid in the AS game.

He’s also just 29 yrs old. Vs. Anderson’s 35. Why would Philly give up on him?!

If the Doyers FO weren’t a total joke they’d be prepared for these injuries by having another established closer on the roster to replace the three established closers they have already had get hurt.

I learned this on CtPG. POBOEIOs and GMs with a clue are expected to have gotten the roster deep enough to handle this.

Poor game by Trout, obviously.

This team has dropped 2 tight games to a better team at home. If they can snatch tomorrow’s game, going 3-3 against Philly-NYM is “good” from a big picture perspective.

Tampa, Texas and Cleveland all pull ahead in the WC race.

But this team has them right where Arte wants ’em. Buyers delight!

We’re gonna “sell” and keep Ward. Feels like the most Buttercuppy outcome.

With Steven Kwan’s name floated on the block, I’m curious what the price is. That’s a dude I’d kill for.

I think Cleveland has shut down those rumors. Too many years of control, and the Angels couldn’t ever put together a package to lure him in. I doubt they’d even bite on a straight up trade for Neto.

Nolan and Logan were excellent.

Neto, Schanuel, Adell, O’Hoppe, and Moore is one helluva core. We will be aright.

Hope Ward and Jansen enjoy their last week as Halos.
