The MFY Sweep the Angels in Anaheim

So, now that Kikuchi has a pitching win, what is noteworthy about him anymore? He’s not been exactly the most successful SP acquisition. He has had quite a few QS. That’s cool I guess.

He will need another one to get his second win the way this team has been hitting as of late. Actually, he was the last Angel to get a win. Coincidence? Anyway he went 5 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits striking out 4 and walking 5. Not a quality start. But not bad? That’s a lot of walks. But only 1 run.

Won’t get a win today. Again.

Highlighted Recap

Kikuchi has a rough first inning. Bases loaded and all. That he only allowed 1 run was fortunate.

1-0 MFY

It was the only run he gave up in his 5 innings. But it was also the only run in the game for a long time. So much that when Stephenson came in, it was still 1-0 MFY. And yes, THAT Stephenson. The “hasn’t played since 2023” Stephenson. And he came in and struck out 2 and got a foul out in under 15 pitches.

Yes, the only Angels Highlight so far is a rp strikeout

In all seriousness, the bullpen did a good job. After Stephenson, Ryan Zeferjahn got through the 7th without a run striking out Judge, Detmers got through the 8th, and Burke got it to TBD bottom of the ninth still 1-0. Good pitching, no offense. Very frustrating.

Anyway Angels do jack and lose 1-0. Their 5th loss in a row.

Upcoming

No game tomorrow. The Angels go to Ohio this weekend, leaving California for the first time since April.

Is there any reliable Mike Trout update? The internet states everything from he has announced retirement to he will return next week. 🙄

He’s hitting & running but, not hitting & running at full speed.

This “bone bruise” designation is sounding more & more like total BS now that we’re 4 weeks removed from Washington saying, “he’ll play tomorrow”.

I think a study should be done showing for every team, bad calls that go against and in favor of every club. Maybe it is just subconscious bias, but tonight felt like a wrestling match where the result was predetermined.

I could have sworn that’s been done…. and yes, THE IMPORTANT TEAMS get more calls, especially at home…. or in this case in front of a home crowd in LA.

That is quite funny.

They score every individual game. There might be something cumulative out there as well.

We are basically middle of the pack in both hitting and pitching in terms of the impact of umpire calls.

Wow, outscored 9-3 in the series. Averaging 1 rpg last 5? As Ward goes…

The starting pitching, in particular, has been pretty decent.

O’Hoppe was not going to do shit with that AB, we all know it. Blaming the umps is a distraction from the real issue, the roster.

Can’t both things be true at the same time.

It was a horrible 3rd strike call but it did not result in 17 out of the last 18 innings with zero runs.

OH NO! Not a DISTRACTION from the real issue! Not me my friend. Even when I’m doing special adult slumber party stuff with women that display questionable decision making abilities I am thinking about the real problems like the roster, Ron Washington and Arte. And after the marathon is over I take her softly moonlit face in my hands, gaze deep into her eyes, and ask her “Do you think Washington’s insistence on bating Taylor Ward in the heart of the line up is doing more harm than good?”

God forbid we ever take our minds off of the REAL ISSUES. Who would hold Arte accountable deep in their silent pigeon chests all hours of the day and night if we didn’t stay ever vigilant?

Re: Umps.

I’ve always kind of liked the variance in how umps called the game with their own flair.

Big zone, smaller zone, favors one zone or another. So long as they were more or less consistent.

It seems less consistent now or perhaps it was always this way. I’ll always be bitter about the Angels/Yankees AL Championship series around 2009’ish when the Yanks clearly had the edge on the umpire front. Perhaps I was wrong about that, too.

Anyway, maybe it is time for the robots.

We were seriously screwed in the 2009 ALCS.

Kikuchi was able to dodge major damage but he has got to gain some control of his pitches. 1.49 WHIP, just allowing too many base runners. With this offense, he will be challenged to win ball games. I think I heard he leads the AL in free passes?

He does walk a lot of guys, which is a shame cause if he didn’t he’d be having a hell of a year.

A 5 game losing streak, scoring a total of 5 runs? No excuses or need to analyze. Just totally pathetic hitting, and to think adding Chris Taylor during this was a good idea?

Yes. The whole Chris Taylor thing is a big huge part of it.

Pitching was good. Home plate umpire was atrocious. I only caught 3 innings and he called 4 horrible strikes, all against us.

I’m not even mad at the Angels that we lost this one, that umpire fucked us over so hard. We have terrible plate discipline as a team, our only “power” is the ability to hit home runs, so calling unnecessary strikes lowers our offensive abilities by 3-4 runs.

Is it weird that the thing I am most bummed out about is that our BULLpen didn’t walk anyone?

Really good pitching by the Angels this series.

I’m surprised that teams don’t walk Judge more then they already do.

Hitting is going to be streaky all year. More cold streaks than hot.

Soler is really disappointing. An under discussed topic.

It’s for the best, in a way. Winning is more fun but with this roster it’s not sustainable. We need to bolster the team with smart draft picks and trades.

If we assume we can’t spend until Rendon is off the books then we don’t have to lament trading anyone whose contract ends after the 2026 season

We couldn’t buy a clutch hit.

Didn’t help having atrocious umpiring. This is an honest travesty. The robots can’t come fast enough. Umpires are obsolete!!!!

It’s crazy how the umps seem to get worse and worse the closer we get to robots. Like they want to hasten the plow. They are just plain BAD. They were better back before their existence was threatened. There were like two umps I just hated, now they are all so bad I feel sorry for them as a group…. they are sad, like a local video store level sad.

It was easier for them when pitchers didn’t throw 98 mph. Even then “kill the umpire” was a popular phrase
