LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Young Core

The Angels at least got an honorable mention in this article about most promising young cores. The usual negativity was raised about Schanuel. Another member of that young core, Ben Joyce, was placed on the 60 day injured list last Friday. We get Shaun Anderson instead.

Evan Longoria will sign a one day contract with the Rays so he can retire as one of them. A Rafael Devers trade is not far fetched according to Ken Rosenthal. Can he pitch? He’s a Player of the Week. Fangraphs quoted chief baseball officer Craig Breslow as saying “I think it’s No. 1, being honest and open with communication.” while pointing out in elaborate detail that Breslow and Alex Cora have been anything but honest and open in conversations about and with Rafael Devers.

The White Sox just designated infielder Gage Workman for assignment. He is a recently injured Rule 5 guy. It should be interesting to see how this plays out. Eddie Rosario cleared waivers and elected free agency. The Pirates just signed pitcher Beau Burrows, late of los Tecos de los Dos Laredos, to a minor league deal.

Lance McCullers Jr. had a rough start against the Reds on Saturday and death threats were made against his family on social media. Stay classy, Houston.

The Diamondbacks are bringing up top prospect Jordan Lawler. They reinstated Kendall Graveman from the injured list and designated Garrett Hampson and Jose Castillo for assignment. Brandon Bielak had season ending shoulder surgery.

The Dodgers acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Blue Jays for cash considerations.

Gawd, How I dislike Manfraud. While I may disagree with the Shoeless Joe Jackson outcome, I was not there in 1920 for the debates that probably took place, but you have to respect that Landis knew what he was doing. I was around for Pete Rose gambling and his lying and while it may be unpopular with many that he be banned, he broke the rules. So does that mean when Bonds, Sheffield, Clemens, Sosa and McGwire pass on they too enter the HOF? Of course it does and that is wrong for a commissioner today to change what a former Commish applied years ago. In today’s world we apply today’s standards whether right or wrong to the standards used in the past and think that is right. Statues torn down, Roe vs Wade changed, and Baseball wanting to say that the sport of Baseball, in it’s past, they got it wrong. Manfred is the worst thing to happen to MLB, well, since Selig, and the two of them are complete A**holes.

If the angels average 10 ks a game, that’s only 5.2 outs left to score runs and get hits. That isn’t going to lead to a bunch of wins.

Eric_in_Portland

help me with the math here. Are you saying we have 15.2 outs per game and not 27? Oh…you mean 5 2/3 innings left. I got it. ok….but if we hit 10 line drive outs per game we’d have the same amount of outs left.

I do agree that not striking out gives us a better chance of getting base runners or moving baserunners over…if we have other baserunners.

Other than a DP, or a triple play, a strikeout is the worst possible out.

My bad, I worded that wrong. I’d be ok with anything but strike outs. Atleast line drives have a chance to move a runner or maybe an error happens, but These angel Strike outs look real bad.

The #Angels have transferred the rehab assignment of RHP Sam Bachman to Triple-A @SaltLakeBees.

RHP Robert Stephenson is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Low-A @66ersBaseball tonight.

Just FYI people-I am neutral on Rose’s induction into the HoF. I just have always posited that MLB was going to allow him to go in posthumously. I bet Petey Jr. might have a flambé acceptance speech already in the making.

Shoeless Joe though, I think he should go in the HoF ASAP-That was no sandbag effort on his part.

I was so incensed that I wrote a rant and accidentally lost it. The short version: bad idea. Going to the old timers group of 16 so 12 LaRussa types can decide and if Rose gets in his kids can celebrate. I’m more ok with Jackson. How about Jackson can get in and Rose’s family has to wait another 60 years?

Ok, looked it up. Shoeless Joe died 74 years ago. Put him on the ballot now. I’d prefer if it were the regular ballot with hundreds of voters. Make Rose eligible in 2098 so his family has to wait as long as Jackson’s

But, Rose should be in the degenerate wing, more bothered by the Roiders. With a Giant ❌ ‼️ ☑️ next to his name. Plainly explaining what he did. I’d say a lot of low-character people are in all sports HOF’s and are celebrated, for equally bad things.

Revisionist history at it’s worst. Rose knew beyond a shadow of doubt what would happen if he were caught. Then got caught and was found to be in deep with exactly the type of people who seek to compromise the game. Decisions have consequences and I hope the Vets Committee sees it that way. Great hitter but a complete scumbag if you read the details.

Played with the simulator just for kicks:

Red Sox receive: Nolan Schanuel

Angels receive: Rafael Devers, Marcelo Mayer, Miguel Bleis, Round A Competitive Balance Pick, $20 million in cash.

Devers can mash, Mayer is an absolute stud, Bleis is a lottery ticket, and the extra draft pick is 33rd overall.

I highly doubt either side would entertain this idea, but honestly I’d take it.

So Devers clanks at 1B and loosens Moncada’s car brakes?

Frankly, the BoSox would probably want something like Silent C, another young pitcher and Lugo-Also I wouldn’t expect much cash from Boston.

But if you can make that trade happen, get on the phone please Mr. Joiner.

that’s not really how that works. I understand what your thinking, but the logic is off. By that same standard, the Angels should place Trout on the 60 day because he wouldn’t be back in 10 days.

He could be back in 6 weeks. That’s roughly 40-45 days. They can always see how he is doing in 2-3 weeks and place him on the 60 then ( a la Ben Joyce). It’s a pretty common practice. If he had a torn ACL or Achilles, sure.

I could not say it enough last season (and the seasons prior) that they needed to trade Rengifo. Yeah, I have a personal vendetta against him, but mostly I despised his lackadaisical defense.

Now that he isn’t hitting either, his value has plummeted, not that Perry would have actually have received anything of value for him. Maybe he’ll get warm before the trade deadline and the Halos can get some bottles of car wax for him.

Anyone still advocating for Paris at leadoff? Haha

Poor kid is one more 0-4 game away from dropping below .200.

All that being said, we might as well keep running him out there, just as we’ve been doing with Jo Adell. This is the perfect season for projects getting looooong looks.

Speaking of sub .200 hitters, the latest Trout injury is seemingly taking it’s predictable course from “he’s playing tomorrow”, to “brief 10 day IL” to cryptic language like “feeling better but, not quite ready” blah, blah, blah.

The unofficial odds of seeing him play this week against SD are -1000 and perhaps -750 versus the doyers. Sigh.

Paris is playing over Adell in CF because of defense, which Paris deserves a lot of credit for btw, but I don’t like how Wash is starting to let Adell rot on the bench.

I played over a 1,000 games in the outfield between high school, college, ML and unaffiliated ball and I while I need the exercise, I never run anymore. Whatever combination of Meniscus and Cartilage remaining is fine if I don’t push it, but if I do, I know it immediately.

May 12th top prospect performance goes to 2024 5th round pick, Dylan Jordan –

4 innings
0 earned runs
2 hits
2 strikeouts

On the season-
8 innings
0 ERA
0.63 WHIP

Wonder how long Joswa Lugo stays in Arizona Rookie Ball? This kid is good!
30 PA
.433 / .433 / .633

Checking in on Nelson Rada –

127 PA
.279 / .392 / .327
10 stolen bases (71.4% success rate)

No power whatsoever, but good gawd look at that OBP. Paris and Adell are keeping CF warm (or cold lol) for Rada.

Rada’s never gonna be a power hitter and I don’t care. Willie Wilson had five seasons with a WAR over 4 and never hit more than 9 home runs. Willie McGee had three. He’s such a good center fielder, we can get home runs elsewhere. Just make good contact and get on base my young friend.

Taylor Blake Ward compared Rada to Denard Span and I just can’t shake that comparison.

Span retired with a .281/374/.397 slash line and played solid defense into his early 30s. He was good for about 3.5 WAR per year until he hit 31 and started to slow down a bit.

Rada is only 19 so if the team lets him develop this year at AA and gives him a taste of AAA next year, he’d still only be 21 by the time he made it to MLB.

And yet he keeps doing it because it’s hard to stop, or he vapor locks because MLB is hard, or he’s just failing. But they won’t hold him accountable and bench him, which is fine cause why mess with him, let him play and learn. I wonder if he looks different in BP?

They have all the analysis, but Washington doesn’t let Paris see it because Wash hates data. Clearly they are stupid. There is no possible way they have talked to Kyreeeen about this and he’s not doing what they tell him to do. That just doesn’t happen.

I missed that.. just commented above I thought his body language looked pretty good while K’ing at an alarming rate. But I agree with Banned, just put him in the lineup and see if he gets it. No better time than 2025 for that with this organization.

Nice game, nice to see Ward starting to heat up?

Let’s make things hard tonight for the Friars.

Go Halos!

Let the kids play!

The Devers article feels like the team is floating up a trial balloon to see if they can garner any phone calls from other teams about a possible Devers trade.

Devers would still end up at 1B.

Maybe, but Devers is sure showing that he’ll be quite an asset to his new team.

I think they are also seeing if SAWKS NAYSHUN will have a cow if they bench or trade him at some point and eat a bunch of his money. The nation has been kind of touchy about how the Sox, until Bregman, had a lot of money but weren’t really spending…. and they may get pissy about Dever’s money and how the FO may get cheap if he becomes an Angels type dead weight.
