Pitch To Contact 4-1 Loss Postgame

I love pitch to contact pitchers. Give me a game full of dribblers and popups with defensive plays but not many strikeouts and I’m a happy guy. So I was looking forward to watching the crafty old professor Kyle Hendricks go against a guy who is a lot like a younger version of himself in Tomoyuki Sugano.

Unfortunately, for Hendricks the contact was quite hard. A solo homer in the first was followed by a 2 run, 30 pitch inning in the second and the Angels were in a 3-0 hole.

The contact off the Angels bats was quite week as Sugano did a good job of mixing his pitches, hitting his spots, and occasionally making a batter lose his helmet. He wasn’t overpowering, but he was efficient and effective.

Schanuel looked bad on that swing but he did make the best contact against Sugano early. He was robbed of a double down the first base line but a really nice defensive play, then later hit a ball to center that Cedric Mullins nabbed just inches from the ground.

That one earned run for Sugano came courtesy of the red hot Yoan Moncada. Dude is just killing it this week. No home run tonight. He legged out a triple in the 7th and scored on a Taylor Ward groundout.

Nolan’s night got worse in the bottom of the 8th when he was absolutely hosed on a call from the home plate umpire. A 3-0 pitch that should have loaded the bases with 2 outs was inexplicably called a strike. Ultimately a routine flyout to center ended an inning that should have seen Moncada come to the plate.

The limited ball/strike challenge system can’t get to MLB quickly enough. If it was here now, there is 100% certainty that call is challenged and corrected. The system has been in the minors now and works fine.

On a brighter note, Matthew Lugo got the birthday gift of a lifetime when he made his Major League debut.

Unfortunately, Lugo misplayed the first ball hit his way and that baserunner came back to hurt the Angels.

Travis d’Arnaud made a great play to keep the deficit at 3-1 in the top of the 9th. Luis Rengifo fielded a chopper with the infield in and threw to the first base side of home plate trying to nail the runner coming in from third base. Travis caught the ball, dove, spun, and managed to tag Rivera just before he touched home plate. Great defensive play.

Baltimore scored the run a hitter later to stretch the lead to 4-1. Of, with Kenley Jansen pitching in the 8th inning. Yes, Washington was managing like a playoff game and brought in Jansen with one out and a runner on second in the top of the 9th.

Felix Bautista closed the door in the 9th. Angels lose…again.

I just read that Derek Carr is “giving up” $30 million, retiring before his contract ends due to injuries. So it can be done in case any other athletes who already have enough money are considering that course

So, I read that the Doyers have a kazillion pitchers on the DL and are in trouble, what trouble? They have the best record in MLB and they are in trouble? Ok, I want the same trouble for the Halos and meet them dang Doyers in the World Series. Geez what to complain about next will we hear about, that Neato Neto is being wasted on a bad team run by Arte? 😂

Rafael Devers first complained that he wanted to play in the field at 3b rather than give it up to Bergman who is the better fielder, he finally did so to become a full time DH though. Now offered the position of 1b and having the opp to return to the field he complains about that not being fair to ask him to do that. I would trade him faster than you can say Jack Robinson. His manager says move on and start bringing up minor league players who can play 1b. The GM talks to him and Devers says pass on playing 1b. Finally, the owner flies to KC to talk to him about playing 1b and he says I’ll try it. Entitled rings a bell here. I read that the Mets are thinking about trading for him to play 3b. Boston, Devers is a fricking DH, and he is not doing well at the plate currently and the Mets have some talented yuts, quickly before the Mets come out of the ether make a deal.

They will not get ANYTHING of value for Devers. His drama has labeled him a problem, that teams don’t want the headaches dealing with him.

When you are playing for nothing, it would be nice to see players playing with energy and passion to show they belong as part of our future. Aside from our shortstop and catcher, I don’t see much of that anywhere on or off the field. This team is going nowhere until the culture is changed both on and off the field. if I were our catcher or shortstop, I’m not sure I would sign any long-term deal with this dead end franchise. The worry would be they end up like Trout, a good player on a losing team.

Kids and I are putting our 3-0 attending games streak on the line tonight and I was thinking just that… I go to watch Neto & O’Hoppe, walk around the stadium, play some pac man, and have a cheap-fun family outing. I wish trout was still a good player!!

What were three games/wins you saw so far this season ? It is a little improbable that with this team you would have an unblemished record with three tries…

April 5th v white sox (my kids love their wall calendars)
April 18th v giants (first time seeing a drone show)
April 24th v pirates (free tix they gave to scouts)

Really want to take the train down to SD to see them play this week too.

For April 5th you must have meant the Guardians since that is who they played on that day… we have not played the Chi Sox at home.

I too went to the Pirates game on April 24th — the only one I have been to this year. It was a good comeback win with Neto getting the game winning HR in bottom of the 8th.

The fall of MNT is such a bummer.

As others have mentioned, very Ken Griffey esque..

At least the mariners get to hang onto his prime years.

We get the M’s high of Grif and the Reds low. With the latter generally being what people remember more.

At a fundamental level the culture won’t really change until Arte either sells the team or kicks the bucket. So, what do you suppose the over/under would be for Arte’s death ? He is currently 78 yrs old so I would guess about 83.5 yrs old… Watch him beat it easily and live to 90, thus extending our misery for another decade + !!!!

Well, Sugano pitched 8 innings “for the first time in his career” against the potent……. I mean impotent, Angels line up. The 2025 Angels continue the trAdition of being other teams slump busters. If your team is in a funk, go play the Angels.

That was just a normal loss…. not a loss with our pants full of crap. I was happy to see “Good Detmers” show up. Kendrick is still serviceable. Both Adell and Paris may not be hitting a ton yet but they look better at the plate. Nolan too. Moncada still looks lively. We’ll see if things continue to pick up

Is it me or does Jansen look like he has Dengue Fever or something?

Isn’t Trout supposed to be back about now?

Yes, where is Trout or at least where is the report on Trout.

“Feeling better, but he’s still not able to do baseball activities,” Washington told reporters, including Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group, before Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jays.

I wish it weren’t true but I believe Trout playing any meaningful baseball is over. He has an arthritic knee and he can’t stay healthy.

This is fun. In a list of 10 young breakout hitters, the Angels have 2 entries.

Washington has turned off the emotions. He doesn’t care. He needed to get rung by that umpire for the absolutely brutal call to Nolan. Not even close.

He is the opposite of a manager who has the players backs.

Completely winnable game, Detmers actually pitched well, Hendricks gave an average start which is all you could ask for, rice cRISPies struck again

I still think he is being misused. He should be a long man or stretched out in the minors as a starter.

Totally agree. He should only be used in games when we are way ahead or way behind.
