LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Losing April

Morning Angels fans. Have some links or whatever.

Angels News

The Angels lost. Again. After being swept by the Twins, the Angels lost to the Mariners. The MARINERS. Ugh. They lost 4 straight, are 3-7 in their last 10 and 4-11 in their last 15. It is not looking good at all. 8 straight road losses.

Perry shuffles the AAA cards and picked up Gustavo Campero. He discards J.D. Davis into the DFA pile and ends his turn. He is speedy OF/C type, so… pinch runner?

Wash does not think the younger members of the team are really MLB players yet. Yeah, that is… a quote…

Around Baseball

One month in, give or take, so how are the playoff odds looking now? Wait, how did the Angels get worse, it was near 0 anyway!

Top right getting better and likely make playoffs. Bottom left getting worse and not making it

It is as times like these that we have to remember that Baseball, like all sports, is entertainment. And to make my point, here is Varsho, entertaining us with a Looney Tunes like catch.

Remember, it can always be worse, you could be a Rockies fan. The Rockies have tied the MLB record for the worst start to the season at 4-25. And if they lose their next 5 games, they will have the all time record worst 34 game start in the history of Baseball.

The O’s are just as bad as the Angels this year. But they were supposed to be GOOD. So, at least we have no expectations!

How about The Orlando Rays? Sounds good to me. Although, I would bet TB residents would be pissed.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Will Een work his way back to us? Suarez, Een all set free, but should we worry that the Bi-Annual Jesse Chavez Angel reunification takes place? Then Jess, right back to the Braves no doubt.

This is so depressing.Every game starts with LOB’s then the opponent gets a walk or two and then it’s a crooked numbered inning and a little glimmer of hope late and then the kick in the nuts. You can feel the moment when it’s time to turn off the TV. I follow baseball but don’t watch other teams on TV because it’s like the difference between first division and second in overseas soccer.Other teams have four homers in an inning or a guy who hits four in a game, that doesn’t happen here. Even earlier when the homers were coming they were in a minor league park and against really shitty pitching which they can’t seem to hit.
Pitchers routinely give up runs on 0-2 counts and the same hitters continue to look like deer in the headlights at 2 strike pitches. You’ve got an old man watching the game, not managing it, afraid to review anything that might slow down the game so he can get home and be put to bed. I’ve already paid my money for the streaming this year and I’ll always watch, but man it’s depressing.

Well. It is a bad team. On the other hand, we knew it was a bad team. So it’s kind of stupid sifting through a pile of shit and announcing that you have found some shit day after day after day after day after day. Then tasting the shit so you can try to look cool explaining what the cook did wrong.

The team’s pretty darn awful right now. What I’m interested in is seeing who does what to address their personal awfulness.

Somebody get Trout to call Paul Goldschmidt. Conversation between two ex MVP players. Paul can tell Mike how at an older age he is focused as a solid contact hitter rather than swinging for the fence. Give him some tips to get out of that horrid batting avg and strikeout rate.

Fk I love the line up bickering. I can always come out looking both smart and butt hurt no matter what. Wash is too ridged. Wash is trying out lots of crap because he has no plan. Wash won’t play the kids. These kids suck, why is Wash playing them? Clearly everyone can see the secret that Wash is playing line ups to make Arte happy. Wash is playing these nine guys. I can have a problem with about eight of them. Then I can have a problem with the guys who get switched in the next day too. Is Wash batting Travis 5th because Travis is Carpino’s favorite? I bet he is. I am smart. Washington is not a real MLB manager. See how that works?

The lineup got pretty positive response yesterday. And in many ways it worked better than previous iterations.

Back to back walks in two innings were killed by GIDP. We’ve wanted more balls in play and we got them but it blew up in our faces. Ironically, this is the first game in forever in which a couple more strikeouts in key situations would’ve been a good thing.

So now Ron Washington is blaming our hitting woes on “too much information” so the “brain trust” has been providing them far less since the San Francisco series, which coincidences nicely with our historically bad hitting slump. It’s always a great idea for the other teams’ daily Cy Young to have “too much information” about our hitters while we have very little about their pitchers. I guess that makes sense in the corridors of our aging out of touch manager’s brain. I would also argue that this is plenty of information for Minasian to fire both him and his hitting coaches, or for Arturo to fire them all.

Noted. As you likely know, the way things generally work in sports is you try to provide the information to players to create improvements in their play. If that doesn’t work and they still seem to be struggling, you then simplify everything and see if that works. Ultimately, it’s up to the players to play well enough. The coaches can only do so much.

I don’t see the coaching being the reason why Trout and Ward aren’t hitting, Adell has never become good, and other players are mediocre. It’s likely more about the actual players, but we will hope for improvement no matter what.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Is this really that hard to understand? A person is trying to do something difficult. There is a constantly flowing river of information showing up every day. But this person can’t even perform the basics of the task right for the moment. You want them to focus on the basic stuff, but they keep trying to do that AND incorporate the extra info they are getting.

You tell them to stop worrying about the extra info and details. You tell them to just do steps A, B and C correctly.

It doesn’t mean they have sent the analytics department home. It doesn’t mean some players aren’t still using data and video. It’s easy to forget that the team couldn’t fking hit when we were winning either…. and having a chubby for Paris back then didn’t change that.

There isn’t really much to over react to here…. unless you just need to react to something to feel alive or what ever.

Oh. And special added bonus for all you rage boners out there with shit leadership skills. THIS type of statement is ACCOUNTABILITY. It is a hint to the players that they suck so fking hard that they need to leave the iPad at home and focus on tying their shoes. This is how managers make points. He’s never gonna come out and call a player washed or overmatched. That fixes nothing and upsets extra people. But he will say shit like this.

The Angels have three of the most promising young players in the game with Neto, O’Hoppe and Joyce. Schanuel, Kochanowicz and Soriano and Detmers are serviceable major leaguers. Dana has potential and Paris and Rada are unknowns with promise. Silseth and Aldegheri are question marks but could turn out.

That right there is something that can be built around with the #2 pick in ‘25.

I see no reason to keep trotting out the same tired older players other than having to complete 162 games. I would trade Ward, Rengifo, Anderson and anyone else of value. The future is our hope.

Would be nice to see Perry to actually commit to a rebuild and not his usual jaunt about wanting to compete. We all said this last trade deadline with respect to Ward, Andy and Heefo. Be thrilled to find a taker for Trout but he is fading hard which will make it impossible.

That’s what is scary “hope’ for the future. We have not had a lot of success drafting, and not to put blame because baseball is such a hard game it can be so darn difficult to predict who will actually be MLB level good. My take is we are gonna have to draft good arm(s) to turn this franchise around. 1-2 aces to build around. The last time Angels brought up an elite pitcher was who, Weaver, healthy Garrett Richards? Unless there is an obvious young Judge or Tatis guy we got to draft/trade for pitching.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  CAoldskoll

Even as we speak, the only pitcher who currently looks like a possible future #1 ace is Hernandez…. and he’s just a maybe. There are guys who could maybe pull it off if “stuff” happens. We have that in our system now too.

We don’t need two aces. We need maybe one and a pile of pitchers with >1.30 WHIPS. Baby steps.

Different side of the coin. There is in the upcoming draft many pitchers rated at 60 (Top score) Top position player is the son of a great player, Matt Holiday. Sure, college players advance earlier, but that in itself does not mean a sure thing such as even being ready to play at MLB level quicker. Would some players that the Angels promoted done better by playing in the minors for additional 1-2 even 3 seasons before advancing.

BTW, I hope the Holliday is available for us to draft, we need a third baseman badly.

Mike Trout

119 PAs
.173 / .261 / .462
18 hits
9 HRs
12 walks
36 strikeouts
100 OPS+
– 0.3 WAR

Trout and Rendon are making $75.7 million this year.

There’s the old adage that one player can’t carry a baseball team by themselves, which is true. What is also true — getting little to no value out of $75 million for the third straight season (Trout was good in 2023 but only played 82 games) will make winning much, much, much more difficult.

There’s enough blame to go around. Mike and Tony deserve their fair share of it.

True. Add to that the recurring failure of the Jo Adell experiment and Taylor Ward somehow hitting below .200 and you have a real problem. Is there a clubhouse issue? Trout and Ward are two guys that are supposed to be the competent upperclassmen who steady everything for the rest. The Halos cannot win anything if those two are a big part of the problem via their non-performance.

The pitching which was always going to be iffy at times hasn’t been horrible. But if the team is going to score 3 runs or less consistently, they won’t win many games.

Any updates on Joyce BTW? They will need him to ramp up in 2025.

Ward has at least carried his weight the last several seasons. Not trading Ward and Rengifo before the season is looking unwise. I’m glad we are giving Adell the opportunity to sink or swim — and he’s sinking like the Titanic lol.

RE: Joyce

Right-handed reliever Ben Joyce (shoulder inflammation) is “moving along slowly,” Washington said. “We knew it would be. We just have to wait and how he progresses.” Joyce started playing catch last week.

By being on the “Sell-Sell-Sell” mode for years now, we all can see that trying to put up a winner with inexperience and retreads does not work, since Wells to Albert to Hammy to Upton to Soler and all the pitchers who have been through here have not helped.11 years ago youth movements have been ignored and our W-L records show it. How did Redone work out? So, you may like Rengifo, he had a career year for half a season last year. There should be only 2 players to hold on to unless we come out light years ahead by trading them. Selling is the one way to rebuild, drafting another, coaching and development help too.

Pineapple12
Super Member

I’m all about the rebuild! Of course, I’ll root for wins as well, but please don’t confuse my optimism with being against selling.

Ultimately what will determine a positive season? Progress from Neto, O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Paris, Soriano, Kochanowicz, Joyce, other young players AND getting prospects back for Jansen, Anderson, etc.

At least our young players aren’t terrible 😇.

This, for better or worse, is really the bottom line for this year, along with the draft. It’s tough being that patient but this year and next year need to be about getting everybody ready to go and filling the holes with the money that comes off the books in 2027.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Roy Hobbs

Yup. Though it’s important to remember. The real team will not have magic GM powers like CtPG Guy the GM. The money off the books will fill about 2-4 holes…. and that’s if we sign players that everyone complains about as “not a committmonk to werning!”. The 2027 money will actually cover the cost of one star player…. and maybe a pen arm.

Then all you need is good players to be available in FA or trade.

Then all you need is for those players to want to come here.

And then all you need is for those players to not fall off a cliff or get injured.

Oh. And you need the business you work for to not care about having been in the red for at least a couple years and let you take payroll up towards 200M.

All you need is that stuff. Then Rendon being gone has fixed everything.

Trout’s contract was never going to age well, unfortunately it’s gotten ugly much sooner than anticipated. It’s a sunk cost now – no way Arte eats 75 cents on the dollar to trade him; no way even the Yanks or Phils take on the remaining $$.

Good or bad, he’s not going anywhere. My only hope is that he puts up a positive WAR over the next 6 years.
