Postgame 2-0 Victory

Tyler Anderson’s last outing with the Giants went about like this.

Today, a double by Nolan Schanuel and then a double by Zach Neto

led to a run in the second inning

on a fielder’s choice benefiting Kyren Paris. This was all the scoring for many innings of the game. I guess I’ll just have to tough it out.

Things went on and on. We got to the eighth when you begin to wonder about bullpen strategy if you hadn’t before. Ryan Zeferjahn came in to pitch the eighth. He did fine for a couple of outs until Jung Ho Lee drew a walk. It’s cool Zeferjahn struck out Matt Chapman to end the inning.

The Angels couldn’t do anything in their part of the eighth. Taylor Ward narrowly missed out on bonehead play of the week when he was nearly doubled up in a weird way.

Kenley Jansen held on for the save. Jo Adell with the final putout. Angels won 2-0!

If this is our guy?

Arquette over his last seven games: 14-for-28 (.500), 6 HR, 8 BB, 1.2 SLG

Worth noting that Christian Moore had multiple similar stretches in the (comparatively tougher) SEC last season.

Moore: .375/.451/.797 (14.5% K rate, .422 ISO)
Arquette: .356/.480/.726 (16.3% K rate, .370 ISO)

(Fwiw, Moore is currently hitting .158 across his first first dozen games, with one XBH, and a 38% K rate. As pitchers feed him sliders away, his contact rate has plummeted.)

I’m just not as bullish on Arquette as some evaluators are, 1-2 week hot streak or no.

Strength of competition does matter, but it’s hard to grok without a little context.

For example, Arquette went 6-for-6 today with 2 HRs, so we’ll be seeing lots of video highlights of him this week.

But he was also hitting against CSU Northridge, a team with an 8-27 record, whose starting pitcher has an 8.15 ERA and has surrendered 17 HRs in just under 60IP this season.

Why in hell are they keeping Ward in the leadoff spot?? Rengifo, Schanuel, Paris, even Neto would be ok. Ward is a 9th place hitter right now. I’d rather have 5 Neto at bats than 5 Ward at bats.

Maybe Ward’s problem is he can only turn left and cant turn right.

Maybe he should have been a NASCAR driver

I’m wondering why Trout is a DH again. Get him on the field to help shake this funk he is in. Perry must have made a bet with Alex that he had the stones to play Soler in the OF.

Yeah, and we’re still stuck with with Perry, just keeps making us worse. BTW how’s that 20 pitcher draft going?

Reply to  2002heaven

That draft produced 3 pitchers that have played in the major leagues (2 with the Angels and 1 with the White Sox) that have produced a WAR of +0.7. By contrast the Giants drafted 3 players that have reached the majors (2 with the Giants and 1 with the White Sox) that have produced a total war of -0.2. Seems like that draft went about average so far, but the Giants’ Roupp looks like a solid pitcher to date.

Just for fun, let’s compare Farhan’s draft results with the Giants to Perry’s result for the Angels. From 2019-2024, the Giants drafted 15 players that made it to the majors (7 alone in 2019) that have produced a combined WAR of 5.6. From 2021-2024, the Angels drafted 8 players that made it to the majors and produced a combined WAR of 8.8. Granted, Neto produced 6.7 WAR by himself, but I don’t think Farhan, who I admit is an intelligent guy, has been any more successful that the Platypus when it comes to drafting.

Let’s take a look at Rizzo. Over the last two years he’s gone .237/.315/.358 with a sterling 20 home runs in 710 at bats. Over the same period Schanuel hit .255/.354/.357 with 14 home runs in 628 at bats. Okay, Rizzo has better power, but do you think 35-year-old first basemen is going to move the needle this season or going forward?

Seems to me that the Angels have enough players that don’t connect very often but when they do it goes out of the park. Maybe they should keep a batter that gets on base at a better than average clip in the lineup.

Now look at their numbers from early June last year ( Schanuels last 450+ Plate appearances) and tell me who you would rather have?

It’s a no brainer. Rizzo is washed.

No disagreement from me, I was just wondering why somebody was advocating the Angels sign a 1B/DH type on the wrong side of 35 and play him over a young player who will probably improve on his previous stats.

Schanuel is superior to the current Rizzo and is 12 years younger and cheaper. He is currently one of our better hitters so replacing him does not help us. To be honest, the guys who you could replace and improve the team are Ward, Rengifo, Trout, and Adell who currently have OPS+s of 101, 76, 102, and 96 respectively. 3 of those guys are close to average and it’s really Trout and Ward that you would be expecting more of. Under the circumstances, I don’t think you will see any changes for a long time.

We really need for Ward and Rengifo to get hot so they can be traded. Changes will start happening next year and more significantly in 2027. We need to see where the youngsters we have are by the end of the year and right now, we don’t have any ready replacements for anyone anyway. We are just nearing 1/10 of the way through the season. I actually would not want anyone else right now unless it was someone who was going to be around for at least 5 years. Our biggest needs in the future are replacements for Ward and Rengifo. Totally addressing position players in this conversation. We could use a 3B and a LF who could hit 3rd and 4th in the line up. The rest of the team is pretty solid for now. Who knows about Trout? Hopefully he wakes up.

Honestly, if Paris has become an actual hitter, he solves for one. If he can also play Center Field, Jo can slide back over to the right side and Trout takes Ward’s position. If not, he’s a multi-positional infielder and we hope Rada turns out to be an MLB outfielder.

Anderson and the pen were nails against a very good-hitting Giants lineup. Two oddly good-to-great fielding plays by Heef, 9 putouts by Jo in CF, and that array of lucky doubles and an error for the 2 runz won it.

Tough luck loss for Logan Webb. He had what? 12 Ks over 6? No walks, only 4 hits. “The loser.” Jeez…

Ward: swung and K’d on a pitch that was literally 3 feet outside, then thought he hit into a DP, only to barely beat out bad throw at 1st when he was walking back to the dugout through the infield. Doofus!

And we won the game.

MNT with 3 Ks. Batting .171 now. Yikes. He looked plain awful at the plate. Do I expect him to start knocking the cover off the ball? Yea, I do. But it can’t come too soon.

Paris also made a nice play on an absolute rocket . Sucking up a hard smash right at him to quell one of the G men’s late inning rallies . I kept thinking Wash & Goins had to be a proud parents after watching that play knowing the stated concerns over Paris defense . And then I got to thinking , you know Swaggy Z and young Kyren could make a pretty good looking double play combo for years to come . …

4th round draft pick out of Rocklin High, CA. Local to the Sacramento area. Worked his way up through the chain w/o being yoyo’d and he’s been solid year 2 forward. Hope we can say the same with Dana in a couple of years.

Trout has spent his entire career at being “patient” and taking the 1st pitch to intentionally get deeper into counts. Early on, he was good enough to be effective when down 2 strikes but, not now.

Pitchers are throwing complete meatballs on the 1st pitch. He needs to swing at those. It’s often the most hittable pitch he’s going to see during most at bats.

Great win, but sadly it is getting close to validating Trout is washed. Joey Gallo part 2, or if you’re older and watched the 80’s Rob Deer part 2. Hit 20 Hr, bat under 200 and lead the league in strikeouts. I’m a total fan but he is a silly easy out now. As if he just can’t see the ball anymore.
