LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Bosom Buddies

The Angels are now cooperating with Eric Kay to the extent of financing some investigation that they allow Kay’s team to use. (Athletic link) The Angels-Rangers series is one of the five series to watch this week. The positive write up is mostly about the Angels, which is not something I see every day. Jeff Fletcher also provided this detailed article about the surprising Kyren Paris.

Sam Aldegheri had a great outing on Sunday which earned him a spot in this “Top Prospect Performances” article. Oh Noooo! The Angels outrighted Jack Dashwood to Triple-A Salt Lake after he cleared waivers. (I know. Who?)

Here is what MLB is doing today for Jackie Robinson Day.

Aaron Judge is going to be the Team USA Captain for the World Baseball Classic. Kris Bryant is on the injured list with lumbar degenerative disk disease. Padres center fielder Brandon Lockridge is on the IL with a hamstring strain. The Mets will place Jose Siri on the injured list because of a fractured tibia.

Blewett, a perfect name for a reliever. Anyway, the Orioles claimed Scott Blewett off waivers from the Twins. The Mariners just designated righty Casey Lawrence for assignment.

Wash loves d’Arnaud more than O’ Hoppe, d@mmit, we knew this was going to happen!

Facetious ray off.

Well the wunderkind that we should have drafted over Limp Noodle Schanuel just got sent back down after his first taste of the big leagues didn’t go so well.

I thought we were facing MNT’s old draft buddy Patrick Corbin tonight but instead now we are facing the Rangers’ Cyler Mahle?

Great.

Stomach bug for Logan, no biggie.

Neto hopefully back in a week.

The only real concern is Joyce, unless we have some Moncada truthers among us. Health hasn’t failed us yet

No, O’ Hoppe was eating in Houston and someone stuck his hand in his food bowl. It was ruled okay as his food was just over the edge of the table.

Can someone call Wash and tell him doesn’t have to bat d’Arnaud 5th just because O’Hoppe usually hits there?

Thanks.

I think that the whole records being delisted thing was a simple oversight that a reporter used as an opportunity to get clicks. Regardless of politics, I’ve never seen anyone in recent history that was anti Jackie #47.

New win streak starts today. It’s impressive the angels have been good this year with $48 million of worthless contracts.

Interesting development that I noticed this morning. Ohtani homered last night and is now tied with Kyren Paris with 5. But he is still trailing Trout’s 6! Just saying.

I am unclear, and I work two jobs so I will never get to read about it. Can someone tell me what the Angels/Eric Kay axis of evil consists of? I can’t tell if Kay is being provided with an investigator to do new work for Kay while being paid by Angels or if Kay is just being provided with old investigation findings that the Angels paid for in the past.

It doesn’t really matter to me. Skaggs pissed it all away under his own power. He’s not a kidnapped Russian girl who Kay stuffed with drugs. I don’t think anyone should pay his future earnings to anyone. But I’m just not clear on what the two parties are actually doing and how together they are.

So in other words another quality Sam the Ass Hat production?

Back in December during another of his Pulitzer Prize pieces, STAH failed to mention that Skaggs family attorneys were also threatened with sanctions over withholding discovery including the possible unwarranted redaction of the transcripts from some of Tyler’s text messages. Evil Arte’s attorneys argued that the Family was deliberately withholding exculpatory evidence as I suspect they felt it showed Kay was not the mastermind behind his massive drug empire but rather more of a reluctant participant in Skaggs’ strong influences on him to get a fix.

So obviously most all of The Athletic’s reporting on this case should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ah, that’s what I figured. A “We’re gonna hunt down this info, you can have it too.” type deal. I was gonna be a little surprised if they had hired an investigator primarily to help Kay…. which was how I’d seen it put by a couple people in other places.

I’ve never had a family member or friend deal with an addiction issue, let alone die from one.

That said, while Tyler Skaggs’s death is incredibly tragic, it was entirely his fault.

If I were on the jury hearing this case, I would not find fault with the Angels as an organization. Tyler was a grown-ass man making grown-up decisions. Unless they can prove, irrefutably, that the Angels were supplying him with the drugs or encouraging him to take them, it is all on Skaggs.

Sadly, I thought this happened only 3-4 years ago, but it was shocking to read that it happened in 2019. How fast time flies.

Okay I’ll bite. Say Skaggs had a major drug problem. Say he was looking for drugs. Place a minimum of responsibility on Kay – say he was pressured by Skaggs to supply drugs to Skaggs.

If Kay supplied the drugs that killed Skaggs and did so while in the course and scope of his Angels employment- then the Angels Org is liable. Skaggs may also have liability but if Kay was the supplier he is unlikely to get away without some liability. And if Kay was an Angel employee at the time and his conduct is found to be liable for the death of Skaggs, then, as a matter of law, there is liability of the Angels Org via Respondeat Superior.

Honestly, Paris and Schanuel should be 1-2 in the order and should have been for the last 2 weeks. We are just way too slow to react. Or if you like, Rengifo and Schanuel with Paris hitting 6th. Whether it’s Business or sports, people who are too close to are trapped by tradition and unable to be agile. Just my opinion.

Washington has seen 50 years of baseball. He’s wondering if he can trust Paris or whether he’s a fad for several weeks who levels out. Paris swings hard and isn’t exactly a traditional lead off or number two hitter. If Paris can do it for a full season, he will secure his spot wherever. Robinson Cano hit 7th for the Yankees when he was young but clearly talented. It happens. Wash wants to see it over time. That’s just how he does things.

Schanuel has a better chance and was hitting second or first in prior seasons. He’s more the type, but Wash likely thinks the lineup he has now is doing ok so why change much. 🤷‍♂️

That’s is exactly what I was saying. The fact that Paris was getting on base more than 50% of the time was apparently irrelevant. It’s not about sustainability, it’s about taking advantage of opportunities.

I like this plan because I can complain about where a “hot” guy isn’t hitting after two games, but I can also complain AS SOON as a hot guy goes cold and isn’t shifted out of a spot. A hitter can be “cold” as soon as I decide he is…. hell, one game if I don’t like the cut of his jib. It’s fantastic.

Roy Hobbs

It has absolutely nothing to do with complaining. You make no sense and your argument is a straw man.

Solo HRs is the culture Perry came from in Atlanta. Lots of solo big flies, lots of strikeouts, and high quality pitching. I think that’s the design here now. Not saying I agree, but it seems to be the plan.

And that’s fine, we just don’t yet have the pitching to support it.

End of the road trip and end of the bizarre schedule where our first 18 games includes 3 at home and 15 on the road. If we can take 2 in Texas that would be a phenomenal record through 18

It’s hard arguing against what the numbers say, and they say that are pitching is just awful. There are some bright spots such as Soriano, Jansen, TA and Zef. But overall, the staff has been bottom 5 to begin the year.

A healthy Joyce and Stephenson would provide a massive boost to the bullpen. Can they get healthy? And when?

On the positive side, Neto is almost back and will make our lineup that much better.

SS Neto
RF Trout
LF Ward
1B Schanuel
DH Soler
C O’Hoppe

I’m likely gonna do the unthinkable and wait pretty much the whole season before I decide if the angels pitching got any better this year.

But that’s not doing it right. You have to look at a small season sample, preferably just the last game played, and extrapolate the entire season’s outcome from that. And then sit back and enjoy looking at pictures of players the team didn’t draft, sign or trade for, all while basking in the glow of how you called it until the next game when all the forecasting changes. I love the ebb and flow.

We’re top 10 in QS (only 2 behind the lead at 8) and bottom five in total ERA.

ERA has been inflated by several blowouts.

Some positive, some negative. Interested to see how things develop over the next couple of months

I’m excited about Neto. I’d also commit the sin of batting Paris down the line up when Neto is back. I am optimistic about Paris, but I don’t think we NEED to put middle line up pressure on him all year. I’ll be stoked if he finishes with a .270 BA and 15HR while playing IF/OF. It also allows Moore to stay on the Farm longer. That’d be a monster win for the team.

You can already see pitchers beginning to make the adjustment too. Throwing more offspeed out of the zone because they know Paris is up there looking to swing and do damage.

The chess game is only getting started. What Paris has going for him is that he hits the ball exceptionally hard (97th percentile to be exact).

PedroCerrano

Paris looked like he got big on his swing and was going for the fences in their last game. He took a ball to right for a single in his last at bat, so perhaps he adjusted or someone said something.

I get that, and no one is saying or predicting anything. What I am saying is that we potentially lost an opportunity to take advantage of a hot streak because we’re to caught up in whether it’s real and how long it will last. That’s silly in my opinion. For 3 weeks he hit over .400 and was on base over .500 and we didn’t bother to take advantage of that because we were too hung up on ensuring it was long term. If it was only 3 weeks we missed an opportunity because we needed to wait to see if would last 5 years. I think that’s nut’s. Just my opinion. We did really well in spite of that but it still may have cost us a couple of games.
