Angals Lose Postgame

Away we go!

Now we get down to it. Today the flyover was by the Condor Legion with World War II planes. I am presuming the Sea Eagles are needed in the middle east.

The second batter of the night, Jose Ramirez, homered to make it 1-0 Guardians. Oops! That was it for Guardian scoring in the first inning, but I guess a run is a run.

Mike Trout, the second Angels batter, homered to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second inning the Guardians scored another run on a close play at the plate. 2-1 Guardians.

Mike Trout walked as did Yoan Moncada in the bottom of the third inning. Nolan Schanuel singled to score Mike Trout. 2-2 tie.

Luis Rengifo reached on a fielding error and then Jo Adell singled to score both Moncada and Schanuel. 4-2 Angels.

In the top of the fifth, Steven Kwan walked. Jose Ramirez homered to tie the game at 4-4.

The Guardians walked an average two runs for the fifth through seventh to make the matter 7-4. Nobody scored in the eighth inning. In the ninth, Jose Ramirez hit his third homer of the game. 8-4 Guardians.

Logan O’Hoppe homered in the bottom of the ninth to make it 8-5 Guardians.

Kyren Paris, who had come in to the game due to an injury, singled to keep the game alive. Jo Adell hit an RBI double to score Kyren Paris. 8-6 Guardians. Travis d’Arnaud grounded out to end the game. The Angels lost 8-6.

While it pains me to say this. Part of what makes the Doyers so freaking good is their willingness to quickly adapt to performance data.

Tommy Edman is hitting Nukes ??..immediately bumped to the 5th spot

My Guy .. Oregon State Beaver Legend Mikey Conforto is consistently having good AB’s and hitting tanks? Boom he’s batting cleanup. Neither of those moves were the plan at the start of the season.

Over here it took a calamity of injuries to get Kyren Paris in the starting lineup and now it will likely take months (if ever) for him to earn his rightful place hitting lead-off.

Ward and Soler have both been brutal in their roles to start the season but let’s keep writing their names in the same spot in the lineup until something changes.

Different orgs man.. different orgs.

Isn’t almost every average or washed player they get play well for them, the Heywards and Pollocks? The secret cheat lab has new customers Edman, and Conforto! Dodgers are so rich they pay the folks who do the testing to ensure negative results. Joking, but wouldn’t that a be fun SI story uncovered years from now.

Here is what I came up with:
1-Paris
2-Neto
3-Trout
4-Ward
5-Soler
6-O’Hoppe
7-Schanuel
8-Adell
9-Rengifo

Not sure if Neto is a #2 hitter but I wanted youth and agression at the top of the order. Rengifo is a good #9 hitter but he can feed the top of the order.

What would you think of Schanny hitting 2nd and Neto 3rd followed by Trout, Soler, and Ward?

That would work with me. I like speed at the top of the order and that is not Schanny but he does get on base and can move runners as he makes contact. Trout would take care of our clean up hitter problem.

His best numbers career wise are batting 8th or 9th but he does have a career OBP of .386 with only 18 K’s in 101 Plate appearances batting 2nd.

Well Toots you better hope hes keeps getting them meat pitches to hit because his Doyer career is trending towards a sub .250 batting average and a sub .300 OBP.

Pretty soon they’ll be replacing him with Kiki

Edman? Really? Good runner and fielder with an average bat (career OPS 101 and RBAT of 6, both heavy weighted by a sizzling start this season). He’s certainly better than many of the infielders the team tried over the past few years, but do you honestly believe he’ll keep hitting with this much power over the whole season? His career ISO is .149 so that suggests a pretty steep regression. I’d definitely prefer him over Anderson and Newman right now, but there are a lot of players to prefer over them at this point in the season.

In my opinion, at the end of the day it’s the same old Angels. Lots of reasons we lost a game we could’ve easily won.

The main one is our players are just not as good as the players on a good team. superstar J. Ram versus aging superstar Trout. Our bullpen versus their bullpen. Their fielding versus our fielding. Their situational hitting versus ours. Their team construction versus ours. Their manager versus ours. So much to fix. So little urgency to fix it.

I agree that play the kids should be this year’s mantra. No reason for replacement level vets to ever see the field other than days off or injuries.

Yes there was some good luck involved for sure in those forst 6 games. Sometimes it’s luck that makes the difference between 4-2 and 2-4. That’s why a baseball season is 162 games. Things tend to balance out and reality emerges. It’s wayyyyy too early to decide what this team is one way or the other.

The Cleveland roster of position players is actually not great. When you get past J. Ram and Kwan nobody actually scares you as an opposing pitcher. What the Guardians DO have is a great and consistent bullpen (as you alluded to) headlined by Clase. And they have pretty consistently good starting pitching.

And of course they execute and dont beat themselves. But I really don’t agree with you that their roster is better. Actually I think ours is better by a fair margain. The thing the Angels don’t do (they DID start to show this trait in Chicago and St Louis) is figure out how to win the tight, close games. This is something Cleveland has been good at for a while now. But I believe this could turn. It is about making the RIGHT baseball play ; moving runners, executing sac flies etc, getting the runner in from 3rd with less than two outs.

Last season the Angels were terrible at those things. I am hopeful this year can and will be different, and thus we could see quite a few more wins.

It’s their bullpen that is their strength, which reminds me of ours in 2002. Once they clear the 5th inning, the game is over. Plus the presence of Ramirez, a true functioning superstar, and their ability to find pieces that work together year after year. That’s good management on and off the field. Do we have that?

JackFrost

Reply to  MarineLayer

Lol. What you said that I disputed was that their roster (players) is better than ours. I pointed out that it is not. Yeah, you named Jose Ramirez who is indeed a perennial All Star. But he is only one guy. That is why I was so upset with the Angels for even pitching to him at all last night.

Last year the Guards had Josh Naylor who was also a threat, this year they don’t. There is nobody really protecting J. Ram and thus no real reason to pitch to him — which the Angels stupidly did yesterday. But the fact that the Angels manager made a stupid decision still doesn’t give Cleveland a better roster. Yes, coaching is important, and I would not argue that the Guards are not better there. But I never said they weren’t. That is not my argument. You said “our players are just not as good..” And assuming you consider Cleveland a good team (your last comment sounds like it) that means you think their roster is better.

They don’t have an amazing roster because their business model is to trade away their best players exchange for upside to keep their payroll low. They know that they can win with their bullpen and a superstar, and a couple of top end pitchers like Bieber and Bibbe. I predict Gavin Williams will break out, notwithstanding yesterday. Manzardo will also break out. Nolan Jones and Lane Thomas have higher upside and have actually performed better in the past than any of ours. They’re not the Dodgers or Yankees but they have enough to be better than us. I just don’t know which players of ours would go in their starting lineup besides Neto, maybe O’Hoppe, and Trout to contend this year. Trading Josh Naylor for junk was a great move for them, but I’d still rather have Carlos Santana than Schnauel this year.

Last night was a great example of what I was talking about yesterday. We lost, but I saw a lot to be optimistic about. The kids hit the ball well and when Neto returns, if the right guys are playing, I like the future. Even Dana gave us 3 innings and saved the bullpen. It was a solid learning experience for him. I hope Paris plays 2B and Joe stays in CF. Joe had 2 hits last night. Newman can play 3B for now when Neto returns. At least we’ll have defense at 3B. If Wash ever figures out the line up, this team will be fun to watch. I would like to see Paris lead off and Neto hit 3rd when he returns with either Trout or Schanuel hitting 2nd. Let’s play and evaluate the kids so we know what we need to do going forward.

Rengifo will probably man the hot corner tonight while Paris who is obviously NOT an infielder will start at second. Newman rocking’ that .077 batting average will probably get the start at short again. With silent C on the mound let’s hope this infield lineup will be defensively sound because they will be getting a ton of action tonight.

On the pitching side I suspect they will option Dana back to AAA today. Probably finally time to promote The Hyphenator ( which will require a 40 man roster move) unless RJ is already tired of being a father

The fact that it says Cleveland was only given .64 runs means I have no reason to trust anything in this chart lol.

At an absolute minimum there was at least one free run when Arias was walked after FOUR strikes followed by Rocchio’s double.

And the man on base for Ramirez’s seconds homer could also be questioned.

JackFrost

Totally agree. This chart if total BS. If they don’t even include the missed strike 3 call that robbed Soriano of a K and led to Cleveland getting runs and taking the lead in the 5th it cannot be trusted. Critical thinking folks. Use your own eyes and brains and don’t trust some random chart that Downing posts in HUGE dark letters to try to convince us of its validity.

I would be curious to know how extra runs are calculated. I’m sure there’s some much more complicated projection that says “well ok that first run wouldn’t have happened but if you assume rocchio led off the next inning with his double then blah blah blah”

But in terms of how you would score earned runs, there were at least two gifts from the ump by my count.

Beyond that, Moncada coughed up another two (1 charged to Soriano) even though it wasn’t scored an error. Soriano getting charged 5 ERs last night is criminal. For the most part, he was absolutely dealing all night.

Agree again… Soriano actually pitched much better than the stat line indicated. That was due directly to umpire interference in the natural course of the game. That said, I still hold Wash and company accountable for terrible decision in letting Soriano pitch to Ramirez AT ALL in this game, but especially after the first HR.

Despite the failure of leadership by Wash in allowing Soriano and co. to pitch to Ramirez, the Angels were on their way to a win in this game. They led 4-2 after the big 3rd inning and Soriano had recovered… The top of the 5th SHOULD have ended uneventfully for Cleveland but for a horrible ball call on what was clearly strike three. It was a beautiful slider that dropped right into the lower part of the zone for strike three. Only the umpire called it a ball, robbing Soriano of a K and Angels of their momentum. This led to a Kwan walk and another Ramirez HR.

THAT was where the game turned — one key decision, one key non-call by the HP umpire changed this from what would have been an Angels win into a loss. Games like this make me want to stop watching baseball. When the blue crew consistently decide games and not the two teams on the field it is very depressing. People will look at the final score and say “same old Angels,” but they miss the fact that our trajectory was towards a W but for interference of the stage managers.

Once we can get the right dudes on the field I like our club this year. Also on this team lineup construction is vital. Ward can’t hit Leadoff and Soler doesn’t make enough contact to hit behind Trout. I’m just afraid it will take Wash until late summer to realize these facts.

Yea and he was consistently late and hurried before his load change. So the Solid eye traits he’s already shown are now magnified. Hes the ideal lead off guy. Won’t happen anytime soon tho. Wash is super sloooooow to adapt to new information.

Ward then gets to hit behind trout which I think is ideal. Soler’s slumps involve a lot of strikeouts so I can forsee a lot of man on third Less than 2 outs Walk Trouty to set up the double play/ get a k in our future if he’s left there. At least even a struggling Ward saves you about 5% of the strikeouts.

Ward has had stretches doing well at leadoff. The thing is the team doesn’t have a prototypical leadoff hitter.

Eliminating the pitcher’s spot known as Newman will be huge when Neto comes back. He stranded 5 guys in 2 at bats, ending the inning each time.

Neto is their best player. They don’t have him which really hurts. Plus he is the SS and the fill-in for him is the worst guy in the team and an inning-killer. So it becomes two negatives.

If Neto can come back healthy and hitting, it will be a big difference. The lack of proven depth in the bullpen is the other problem. While people can claim via spring training they have depth, they really only have Joyce and Jansen that you can trust. That ends up losing games. Stephenson’s injury has been a huge negative for two seasons (2024 and early 2025).

Cowboy26

You cant have a major bullpen without the development of young arms. Zeferjahn is one I trust and probably would have got out of the last night unscathed if it wasn’t for the injury. Ryan Johnson is an oddity and has already shown enough Grit at this level to trust him even in high leverage situations . Burke has been effective for most of his Angel career but had one bad stinker last Wednesday so I’m not going to count him out either . The problem is the other 3 bullpen spots:

The Detmers usage is puzzling because he is a starting pitcher first and if he is not starting here he probably should be starting in Salt Lake. Garret McDaniels is a long term investment arm anything we get out of him this year is a bonus but we need to recognize the tax this puts on the other bullpen . The same might be true with Ian Anderson. No options left , still recovering from TJS but has an intriguing career with some big time games under his belt. His first professional baseball relief outing was outstanding but going to the well again on back to backs was not wise . Of course giving up back to back bunt singles in clear sacrifice situations was not going to end well but I can’t blame him for that stupidity.

So there is no question the Angels need more bullpen depth. Their options after RJ returns to upgrade arms down there ( barring a phantom injury) are:

Joyce
Zeferjahn
Detmers
Johnson

Obviously Joyce aint going anywhere nor is Zeferjahn if he’s healthy. That leaves Detmers or Ryan Johnson getting banished to the Great Salt Lake mines. But the options currently on the 40 to improve our bullpen are far from inspiring:
Hans Crouse (Out with a serious injury)
Jack Dashwood ( 54.00 ERA in 3 AAA relief appearances)
Sam Bachman (MIA due to TOS but we may never see him pitch the Big A again)
Chase Silseth (The Angels want to keep him as a starter)
Jake Eder (other than being a LHP not sure what his redeeming qualities are)
Victor Mederos ( ( He’s now been relegated all the way back down to A ball)
Sam Aldegheri ( was MIA most of spring but is starting Sunday in Rocket City)

There are some possible options not on the 40 man ( like Michael Darrell-Hicks, Shaun Anderson, Connor Brogdon , Victor Gonzalez or even our old friend Jose Quijada,) but thats not an encouraging bunch.

Nice analysis. Not very encouraging though. Detmers has taken over the Suarez role I think which can only be termed an upgrade. Everything else is in flux. Johnson has been fun but how long will he last? They hope Ian Anderson can do something in the pen. Not sure he can.
