The Angels traded Jose Suarez to the Braves for right-hander Ian Anderson. He’ll be pitching out of the bullpen. Scott Kingery cleared waivers and the Angels outrighted him to Triple-A. Mike Trout is enjoying his switch to right field. Here is MLBTR’s review of the Angels offseason.
In other news, the Red Sox released Adam Ottavino and the Rockies will release Jake Woodford. The Brewers will release Manuel Margot. Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson will begin the season on the ten day IL due to his intercostal strain. Forty one year old Jesse Chavez just got a minor league deal with the Braves.
The Rangers placed right-hander Dane Dunning on waivers. The Rockies sent outfielder Nolan Jones to Cleveland in exchange for Tyler Freeman.
Right-hander Drew Thorpe will undergo Tommy John surgery. Of course he will be missing the 2025 season.

RHP: Seth Hernandez, Corona (Calif.)
The best prep pitcher in the class, Hernandez is tall (6-foot-4), projectable and athletic. And he has really good now stuff, with a fastball that’s flirted with triple digits, a plus changeup, a high-spin spike curve and a newer slider.
Commitment: Vanderbilt
Quit drafting college kids who can’t play in MLB (Matt Thaiss, Nolan Schanuel} We need great players, not scrubs who are still in AA at 27yrs old
💪 💪 💪 💪
I like Hernandez. I like Bremner and Arnold too.

You beat me lol.
Before anyone freaks out about Reid, please understand that we’ll use 10+ SPs. Reid will get his shot and better be prepared to take advantage when it comes.
True but I’d rather have him stretched out for when that time comes.
Although if they go towards mine and Gitcho’s dream of a starter followed by a guy who goes through the lineup once, this could be it.
Kikuchi is a lefty. Let him go until he can’t then bring in the righty Anderson to offset a righty heavy lineup. Or, after Silent C goes, we can bring in Detmers.
I imagine Reid will be used in multi-inning appearances.
He isn’t the most confident dude and sending him back down to AAA might destroy whatever confidence he has left. From that angle, I like the move in keeping Reid on the MLB roster.
Reid Detmers: “Obviously being a starter is where I’d like to be and I believe that’s where I’ll end up being eventually. But right now it’s getting off to a different path. I’m looking forward to it. Whatever way I can help this team win is what I’m going to do.”
Reid Detmers cont…”It is what it is, I’m not mad about it. I’m excited to go on with this new role and get things going.”

Sounds like the Mike Trout press reply.
After countless PR disasters over the years has Arte mandated company lines for everyone ?
Would like to see the Giants get Reid. Deserves better.
Oh how I dream of chaos. Pitching Chaos…. bring it on….
The correct choice
Doyer Garrett McDaniels scheduled to appear, maybe?

Anderson hitting above Rengifo is blasphemous.
When you only going to score 1 or 2 runs, doesn’t matter who bats where.
The more ABs King Luis gets, the more chances he has to hit solo HRs 🧠
That is a really weak lineup.
Missing Neto, O’Hoppe, Adell and Moncada will do that.
Are Adell and Mickey going to platoon?
Adell and Mickey going to
platooncartoon…. With a bunch of K’s and outs.Rengifo playing a defensive position is blasphemous.
Can we please put a cap on players named Anderson?
Nope. Next… Neil Anderson
We get anymore, we’ll need to start naming guys buy their number.
But then which Mr. Anderson is our Neo?
Art already did….pissed he needed to order more A’s, N’s and D’s…..he’s running a business, didn’t raise 2025 budget for uniform lettering.
Sign Pamela Anderson. Leadoff?
I’m waiting for Schanuel’s trade or release.
I’m looking forward to everybody reminding you that you said this. Are you CTPG guy?
Looks like he sock puppeted his “like”, too.
GUEST WRECK!
He does that ALOT
I don’t want a 6ft 4in David Fletcher at 1B
Eckstein debuted at age 26, schanuel turned 23, 3 weeks ago.
True, and if Schanuel was a speedy middle IF or a CF I would view him very differently.
…..and a cell phone free clubhouse, plus Trout being in the best shape of his life….which is 10+ years in a row now, he must be one of the fittest humans ever.
https://x.com/JeffFletcherOCR/status/1904210555965211122
Wasn’t that Pujols who was always in the best shape of his life? Trout’s been fat since around 2014.
No, it was Julio Suarez in his best shape ever (Pear shaped).
To be fair, pear is a shape.
🍍 🍍 🍍 away from Opening Day !!!
Seasons with little to no expectations are always enjoyable (to me)!
You know I’m ready. Y’all have posted about Suarez nearly 6,000 times since the trade, meaning that y’all are ready.
Two more fake games against the Japan Dodgers, and then it’s real.
Suarez has been traded. Your long nightmare is over CtPG Guy. Who will be the new “worst pitcher ever who doesn’t even care enough and gives up six home runs an inning in our hearts and represents how stupid and un dedicated to wins we are”? Cause I’m pretty sure we have that guy on the roster.
I actually like the Anderson pick up a lot. He was a 60 grade prospect 3 years ago. He has a good Fastball/Change up mix and a solid curve. He’s an Anderson, which is what the A stands for on our hat now. He’ll start out in the pen but can be switched to a starter if we want. Just gotta get him back from TJS this year without having to option him. .
And this is just the type of roster to do that with. I was expecting to get a bag of air and some thoughts and prayers for Suarez so this is a nice pick up
Boston Red Sox going for that extra ROY cred with Christian Campbell.
Team looked fairly good last night till it didn’t. I expect this a lot this year. It’s an improving team, but it’s still not a good team and over nine innings that’s gonna show up sometimes.
Jo Adell. Bro. I want you to be good soooo bad. Try picking a couple pitch locations off the plate to NOT swing at.
Didn’t realize what a prospect he was at one point. Before the 2021 season it looks like most outlets had him ranked as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball.
Yeah. He was a big deal. But then, so was John Lamb. we’ll just have to see. But this is the type of thing I actually want PTP trying to do right now. He could try this five times and fail four of them, but if we get a solid pitcher for nothing out of it for the next 4 years who cares?
Aqualung is yet another example why I shudder taking a Pitcher with that #2 pick.
Just don’t.
Not sure who aqualung is
The lead singer of Jethro Tull is also named Ian Anderson. I was tempted to make a “Thick as a Brick” joke but decided to take the high road.
He’s the guy with snot running down his nose.
As long as he doesn’t eye little girls with bad intent.
Greasy fingers, smearing shabby clothes? Checks out.
Anderson was a prep pitcher though – the riskiest of all first round player types – high risk, high reward. And of the top five players taken in the 2016 draft, three were position players, and none have delivered even 1 bWAR in their careers.
The draft is risky, period.
Of the fifteen highest WAR players from the 2016 first round, ten are pitchers. So there’s nothing inherently riskier about choosing, say, a college arm over a prep or college bat. In fact, pitchers tend to hold their value longer (by a nose) among early draftees over other player types.
Quesadilla is the next one who needs to go
Need to keep the guy we got from the dodgers
Does he need to be on the opening day roster or just the 40 man?
Got to be on 26 man… uniform and all
That’s what I figured. And I’m assuming you aren’t allowed to option him down the minors at a later date or he gets sent back to the Dodgers?
We know the Angel lack good communication skills. Maybe some arm fatigue, other health issues? Doubt he’s getting ALL his work in outside of games after 7 innings of ST.
Unfortunately they seem to like that Quesadilla guy. If you can find a taker for Suarez, you could find a taker for Quesadilla.
Free the Doyer Guy!
Good question
Dodgers farm is way overrated
I’m glad to see that Suarez has moved on as I personally don’t trust him when it matters most. That being said, I do think he was in better shape than previous seasons and I always attributed his lack of success early in seasons to a lack of conditioning. It will be interesting to see what happens with him in ATL.
Bartolo Colon would like a word.
He’s the exception that proves the rule. 🙂
He was reaching bartolo colon size with a 1/10th of the talent.
Mine wuz Sandoval
6.1 BILLIONS dollars for the Boston Celtics! I mean, yah, they are probably the most valuable team in the sport. But WOW.
Almost got to wonder if Cohen’s method of just blowing up the salary structure will work if it nets a bunch of WS titles and fan fervor so your team’s value goes to 5 Billion…. though in reality that’s a pretty iffy proposition and every season that you lose 100M trying it eats away at that value.
Naw, bra. If the Celtics are worth $6.1, the Lakers are worth 7 minimum.
Now. Probably. Thus probably. I bet Lakers fans kinda wish Busses would sell….
Well, I’m a Lakers fan and I’m pretty happy with them. Better them than a private equity consortium or skeevy Las Vegas billionaires.
I’m a laker fan too and I look forward to when they finally fire their head coach, LeBron (Ain’t no party like a P. Diddy party) James.
I like Mark Davis of the Raiders.
I’m actually thinking about watching them again. Maybe after LeBron retires.
getting Luka was a game changer for me
Me too, but he can walk at season’s end.
I suspect that had Jeannie had full control after Jerry died, then they might have had a much better decade.
Dallas Cowboys are Number 1 in valuation. The Yankees, Warriors, Rams and a few others are ahead. As are the Lakers as grichman said….
I struggle to understand how NBA teams are a better asset than an MLB team. I go back to the Suns who sold for over $4B, while Arte apparently couldn’t get $3B for the Angels.
Why? There are twice as many baseball games as NBA, and baseball stadiums have twice the capacity to watch love. Is it all TV money? Salaries in the NBA are crazy but its a smaller roster.
I can understand why the Celtics are worth $6.1B, but it doesn’t make sense to me the Suns are worth more than the Angels (?) without understanding more of the underlying financials.
Suarez gone? Yes! First good news of the spring.
Glad to see Suarez go for anybody. He and Sandoval were the most frustrating pitchers to watch. They would hit a hundred pitches by their 4th inning of work. Speaking of frustrating, last nights game was just that. Leaving guys on base then kicking the ball around enabling the Dog-hairs to cruise. I know it’s only a spring training game but if Wash had challenged that blown call at first it would have saved a lot of wear and tear on the pitching staff and the team on the field. Jansen looked really rough too.
Good news, he only gave up an .806 OPS against lefties.
That’s hilarious
Ian Anderson seems like a good return for Suarez. There’s injury risk for sure but also upside.
But we Still need more right handed setup guys. IA has never pitched in relief before so other than long relief stints I just dont see him helping the team in those middle innings when our bevy of left handers are getting hammered and our right handed setup guys are over taxed. I still think there is another move out there as I dont understand why you need the Perdomo/Quijada/Burke three headed lefty monster in the same pen
But as a starting option, depending upon his ongoing rehab from TJS, Ian Anderson this could be a steal
Aqualung will be running in from the pen with snot running down his nose…
my first thought is to send him to SLC and plan for him to start.
with his walk rate, I’m skeptical he can help from a bullpen role.
He’s out of options so he has to stick at the MLB level.
Hence why it was a straight up hostage swap
ah – this will be a lot more interesting in how he’s used
I think the gamble is that his walk rate was fine till the TJS was needed. They are hoping he comes out healthy and throwing peas. If not, the cost was Suarez and our division championship chances.
Exactly. Ian averaged 4.0 BB/9 in his first 3 MLB seasons before the knife. Not great but adequate with his K rate being close to 1 per inning. He pretty much averaged the same (3.8 BB/9 & 9.0 K/9) ) in his 15 minor league games last year. I would be curious what his velocity has been . if it’s way down he’s probably had to get too fine with his control against major leaguers which has been hard to do during this rehab period.
I’m sure Perry and the boys have some data on him but if they can get him back anywhere where he was in 2020 & 2021 this could be a huge pickup for the ball club. Now he is eligible for Arbitration starting in 2026 but if considering the low risk if he shits the bed the Angels can just release him.
He walked 18 batters in 17 innings this Spring.
Yeah. He’s got the post TJS hill to climb and there’s a good chance he won’t do it. But if he does we got a steal, if he doesn’t we lost a guy people around here had a visceral puppy killer type reaction to.
He’s in a perfect spot to rehab at the MLB level. He can take mop up duties for a couple months.
Spot on. Velocity returns before before control with TJ surgeries. One of the few advantages to the Angels being a “minor major league” team is taking a flyer on high upside but risky guys.
There are plenty of guys in the running for Cy Young awards with a walk rate in the 3.4-3.7 range. It’s really just his velo that’s a big question…. if he has to get cute he’s derst.
Did we cut McDanials? I liked him….
Not yet but doesn’t seem promising given he hasn’t been used in MLB games for awhile
😢 sadness
Perry really seems to like collecting former first round picks.
yes its a great return!!
great ERA, but he walks a lot too
I think in Perry’s mind MLB is made up of the Angels and the Braves.
And the Phillies
You would think Perry would trade with his own flesh and blood before continuing to trade with AA & DD.
Now that Ranger Suarez is hurt the I wonder if Perry’s friends would be interested in an Anderson for their rotation. Maybe give us Carson DiMartini for him or Mike Marcado and Otto Kemp….
And then give TA’s spot in the rotation to Detmers?
I’m down with that
They’ve come this far with Detmers. After his relatively good ST, after last year’s demotion, his off and on success over the years, giving him a chance in 2025? Are they actually going to throw him in the BP? I sure hope they keep him stretched out. Zero % chance they won’t run their usual 10+ starters out there like every other year.
Don’t we want to see if he’s finally figured it out after all this, don’t they know not to f’ with his head?
Free Detmers!
With the rate at which rotation arms fail/get hurt I don’t think anyone should be worried that Detmers is not gonna get starts this year.
Now that Suarez is with the Braves, I assume this is when he will finally find some form and be effective. But at least he isn’t still here. They spent more than enough time waiting in Anaheim for him to do so. I doubt Ian Anderson will provide much, but we will see.
Maybe they can fix him? …… nahhh.
its easy – just stop throwing 93 mph meatballs over the heart of the plate
Like they fixed Sean Newcombe?
He’s 27, can’t stay in shape, throws weak 90 – 92 mph meat balls down the middle when he’s ahead of counts, that’s if he can even get ahead in the count.
That’s the thing. Suarez has thrown a large chunk of good MLB innings. And he’s a lefty. That’s why he was in our camp. As a hostage trade flyer the Braves can do a lot worse.
Angels signed Johnny Ray

RHP to minor league contract.

So he can pitch. But isn’t he a little old to come back as a pitcher ?
