I believe Wash’s contract expires after this season. Assuming he isn’t brought back what is everyone’s feeling about hiring Pujols who is obviously politicking for a MLB managerial job.

If you had to choose, would you be on Team Torii or Team Gramps?

No doubt…Torii. But Wash will be extended during this season.

Angel brass might try with an extension but Wash made some damning statements last September about the talent level of the players the organization has given him. I did not see anything this offseason to change that outside of the Kikuchi signing. No, back-up catchers and a DH don’t count. Another 90+ loss season, I can see Wash walking away.

I was pretty nonplussed with him last year. I felt he was quick to throw players under the bus. That being said it took until the 3rd year in Texas for Wash to get the Rangers to cook. I’d give him another two years.

Cortez had a choppy box line yesterday. Anybody see him pitch? How was his eyeball test?

You mean Friday?

He didn’t pitch yesterday. Apparently the Angels have seen enough he got reassigned to the minor league camp today along with others.

Am I high or does the box score indicate 5 runs on 2 hits
today?

4 runs on one hit seems to becoming our calling card

I like Johnson a lot – I was happy with that draft selection. But he very much seems like a ‘different look’ leverage reliever to me, not a starter long-term.

His windup paired with Jansen’s is some voodoo timebending shit.

Son of Ben Weber?

It does recall those Weber/Shields days of premium funk. He has Weber energy, and Shieldsy weirdness.

I suspect he’ll be a puzzle like Shields too – a guy you’re tempted to stretch out because he’s effective in long relief, but who might not be as valuable as a 5 inning starter, so you keep him in the pen over the long run.

Starter for Dallas Baptist, pounds the strike zone so might be able to stick there. I’d let him begin as a starter until proven otherwise.

They’ll do that, but they’ll be tempted to promote him quickly as a reliever, because I think he could be of value there quite soon. Jansen-Joyce-Johnson is a compelling bullpen back end.

But in general, I completely agree with Longenhagen’s take on Johnson, down to the very-outside-chance he can put together a Tanner Houck starter path:

Perhaps the weirdest of all 2024 draft prospects….Why so weird? Johnson has a funky low-slot delivery that features big effort and a huge head whack. He doesn’t look like a typical big league starter, but he certainly performed like a starting pitching prospect in college.

Johnson uses an east/west attack and throws a ton of low-80s sliders. His fastball sits 92-94 with tailing action, and the horizontal divergence between Johnson’s fastball and slider was too much for college hitters to deal with. Johnson often changes the pace of his delivery to home, with frequent quick-pitches catching hitters off guard. At first glance, he looks like a deceptive long reliever, but let’s be mindful that guys like Tanner Houck have paved the way for pitchers with funkadelic low-slot deliveries like Johnson to develop and thrive as starters. Ideally, Johnson will develop a splitter or something else to fill out his mix and make him better able to tussle with lefties. His grade here leaves room for starter outcomes even though I think it’s unlikely.

Shields is one of my favorite relievers to ever watch pitch

I always thought he was cool because his mom only gave him one t.

But he seemed like a really nice guy. Here’s my Shields story:

I guess he had a warmup in-game ritual where in the 5th or 6th inning he would jog all the way out from the dugout to bullpen during a break.
We were on one of our family group baseball trips this time at Fenway and I was able to get tickets way out in right field right above the visitors bullpen which was literally on top of the players. My young son reached over the short railing and high five’d Scot in stride after they had opened the gate and greeted his teammates. He was probably happy to get some love from some traveling halo fans versus the typical boisterous Red Sox faithful.

Same here. Obviously I have a fetish for eccentric relievers (my name is an homage to Turk Wendell).

But yeah, even my wife had a big crush on Scot – just a specific dude with a great style.

I also loved Darren O’ Day and I’m still not sure how we lost him.

I thought it was great when he was a Baltimore Oriole and got to promote Solowheel. I could only imagine him taking that to every home game traveling through the streets of Charm City on his way to Camden Yards

Rule 5 loss IIRC. Was a very useful player for a good long time, but somewhere the FO lost its appetite for sidearmers and funk.

Minasian, OTOH, despite his emphasis on velocity and power sinkers, seems to be more permissive of odd look relievers.

Whats your feeling on knucklers?

Dennis Springer is the last Angel that comes to mind but we’ve really have never had anyone else.
