LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Prospects

Here are the international prospects the Angels signed yesterday. Well actually it’s just a list of their names. Gabriel Davalillo made number 17 in this list of the top 50 international prospects in general.

The Yankees acquired right-hander Michael Arias from the Cubs for cash. The Pirates acquired right-hander Brett de Geus for cash considerations as well, but from the Blue Jays. Keston Hiura and Nick Martini both got minor league deals with the Rockies. The Mets claimed Austin Warren off waivers from the Giants. The Giants traded Will Kempner to the Marlins in exchange for international bonus pool space. They also traded Blake Sabol to the Red Sox in exchange for international bonus pool space and the Red Sox DFAd Chase Shugart. The Orioles traded Blake Hunt to the Mariners for cash considerations and the Mariners DFAd Samad Taylor in a corresponding move.

What say you? Jose Quintana, Andrew Heaney, or none of the above?

Former big leaguer Tommy Brown passed away at the age of 97. He made it into the big leagues at 16 years old.

I like the Mets’ Jesse Winker signing. Solid player at a good price.

I like that he’s not on the Angels. I was a power pitcher in college and that guy would have made my most likely to wear one in the ribcage list.

Yes he may be an asshole but he would have been our reasonably priced asshole.

would we have been ok with Piersynski? Did I leave out a z? I want to have an emotional contact with my team rather than root for the uniform. If there are players I detest then I would not root for the Angels.

It’s already hard enough rooting for players that you don’t necessarily dislike but who aren’t really very good.

He’s an intense, full-bore competitor, who works well in some environments and causes friction in others. Mets fans and teammates seem to love him, but there wasn’t a good culture fit in Seattle.

I see him as an affordable lefty bat who is a strong performer against right-handed pitching, and who would make a better platoon partner with Adell than Moniak.

Well, Italian Halos are a historical mixed bag:

Mike Scioscia brought us dugout nose picking, turning the page and a WS championship.

Dino Ebel-Great coach, nice guy during his MiLB career.

Gary Gaetti jacked up Wally Joiner with his “Insight.”

David Fletcher did okay for a while.

Kole Calhoun-Always loved his hustle and commitment.

Dante Bichette-Another player the Halos gave away after developing.

Sam Aldegheri-Too soon to tell, seems promising.

Lucas Giolito-(Heavy sigh)

Max Stassi-When he was healthy, he did okay IMHO

Jim Fregosi-Obviously awesome

I missed the Halos MiLB player (Jewish last name) that played for team Italy a few tournaments ago-He never made it to the bigs.

I’d say that’s far more positive than not.

A heart of the order of Trout/Soler/Alonso would be nice with guys like Ward and O’Hoppe/d’Arnaud around them.

Hey, I just noticed we have a catching tandem with apostrophes in their last names.

That said, please no on Alonso.

If we sign him the Dudes polar knee cap will explode running down the first base line in game one.

The problem with Alonso, Bregman, and Guerrero, is that they all want more money and years than they’re worth. All 3 of them though have been very durable playing 150+ games the last 4 years straight. Something we don’t currently have, even among our younger players. We can’t really sign any of them though because we would lose our 2nd draft pick.

THIS is why I’m all for signing FAs later. When the three good years out of six on the contract you give him will hopefully lead to post season wins.

But if you are a solid 30 wins from needing to worry about that why waste the money and playing time?

We need so much, signing Alonso would tie up $$ and only hinder using Arte’s rubles to address higher priorities.

The Angels have enough swing and miss guys. They need more contact hitters. Plus you have to wonder how fast Pete might fall-off once he gets another multiyear deal.

I’m curious. What is it you think that signing someone would hinder Arte from actually doing that you think he would do if he didn’t sign them, and what are those higher priorities and what is the likelihood he spends on them. I’m not arguing for or against this but I am interested in you thoughts.

“I’m not arguing FOR signing players. I just always bring up players I wish we would sign…. and keep saying I don’t think we’re rebuilding…. or that Arte won’t rebuild… but I never say we aren’t rebuilding and we should just sign free agents cause I want to sign free agents that have zazz.”

It hurts my heart to see this. He was a treasure and will be deeply missed.

He would probably say something like this in his always cheerful voice: “Well you know, old man time is still undefeated after about 18 billion tries” RIP Ueck.

Uecker is an example of someone that professionally pivots and finds greater success. His admittedly very tame MLB numbers were parlayed into multiple advertising and acting opportunities. His broadcasting was great, then and in interviews, he was lightning fast with zippy one-liners, often self-deprecating (IMHO the highest form of humor).

Awww man. there you go looking up data and shit. Get with the program. Just bitch about the guy that our FO hasn’t even mentioned as though they have just signed him because a guy mentioned him in a comment.

That is the soaked in level of sad bitch juju a true Angels fan that cares about the team will have. Just a fan mentions a possible FA to sign > the FO signing the FA is the Angels > Arte owns the Angels and that FO that would be signing the player that a guy who is just an Angels fan mentioned. > I hate my dad. > Maybe I should look this guy up and see if he may be useful. > I hate most of my old bosses too. > Fk the stats and fk that free agent. He sucks.

Gotta let that negativity sink in so deep that you’d hate a corgi puppy if it was named Arturo.

It’s what will eventually be what drives the Angels to greatness. Just ask my dad. Who I hate.

Loved the comments on yesterday’s post.

Outside of the failed trade deadline push in Sho’s last season (which I will always defend), we’ve been operating with a plan.

I could talk all day about the young talent on our MLB roster. Can’t wait for ST!

A full 162 of Trouty and Adell is what we need!

Quintana was a decent pitcher for several years, got to Anaheim and sucked but immediately improved once he west elsewhere so I would pass on him. Heaney was injured a fair amount and hit some lows while here but also had some of his best seasons. For the right price I’d be okay with a reunion there. Not sure he was worth the $13m he got last season, but that seems to be the market price.
