LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Extras suck

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

The Angels lost in Extra innings. Again. They tend not to do well in those.

At least they are doing it with youth. The Angels 25 and under hitters are the 2nd most productive in Baseball. (In terms of home runs hit)

As for the pitching, while Detmers has regressed, Canning and Sandy have bounced back. Maybe they can all be good at the same time hmm? Wouldn’t that be nice.

Speaking of, Tyler Anderson has been pretty good this year. There is no reason for him to do so other than it being an even year. Seriously, look at his career. Even years good. Odd, not so good.

Around Baseball

How much does pitch framing matter anyway? I mean, yeah, lying to the ump has some uses but is it really worth risking breaking your arm? Apparently yes, as moving closer to the batter makes a lot of difference.

When people ask hypotheticals about how valuable a player would be if they got a hit every day but only 1 hit, it is usually theoretical. Well, Marte had a 19 game hitting streak where his batting average lowered because he did that.

Harper helped a High School student with a marriage proposal. I never understand these people, but you do you I guess.

The Rangers finally fell below .500 this year. It could have been the Angels who did it but they can’t win extra inning games! That also means the Mariners are the only team in the AL West with a winning record. Ew.

And the above is because Ranger Suarez pitches like an ace and not like Jose Suarez. He is having the best start to a season for a SP since Juan Marichal in 1966 and the best for a Phillies pitcher since the 1910’s. We signed the wrong Suarez!

Which, in turn meant that the Phillies beat the Rangers for the first time in over a decade. No way this happens again with everyone playing everyone every year now. Unlike in SEC Football.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Lineup today against a pitcher with a 7+ ERA. Can we win this game stress-free please?!

And I’d never thought I’d see the day where I’m dreading a game where KEVIN PILLAR IS NOT PLAYING!!!

Can an admin help me out? I thought I posted a fan post last week, but have not seen anything. Don’t know if I submitted incorrectly or something. Appreciate it!

I saw it this morning. I alerted the masthead people. I am presuming the 5/21 version is the one you want published. If nobody finalizes it in the meantime I will do so this afternoon. This morning work intrudes.
Edit: basically, it’s not just you. One of us needs to put a picture onto all the Fanposts and hit the official publish button.
Edit Edit: Looks like an interesting article.

The current 8 man bullpen ( assuming Roansy really does exist) has NO pitchers with any options remaining.

Based upon their results and salaries owed the only viable Replacement candidates would be:
Suarez
Fulmer
Contreras

So Unless the phantom injuries arise or Perry starts DFAing some of these losers we aren’t getting any reinforcements any time soon.

Here’s the collection of arms at AA:

https://x.com/BeyondTheHalo/status/1793050341229125692

At AAA, Retread Bryan Shaw is still a possibility and Guillermo Zuniga just came off of the IL . I talked about LHP Tyler Thomas in the past but he couldn’t even get out of the 7th inning last night.

Only Joyce & Zuniga are already on the 40 man roster so a Phantom injury would only provide those 2 possibilities ( I doubt Perry would Move MNT or Ehire to the 60 day IL to create a 40 man roster spot) Not sure what the Angels see in Contreras but they traded for him so I doubt they would dump him a week later without even using him. The Angels wont give up on Suarez despite our pleadings so that leaves Fulmer as DFA odd man out.

Very nice recap. Perhaps we have people on the 40 man who need to be dumped?

I like how, because we haven’t see Roansy in action yet, we assume he doesn’t yet exist.

I wonder if this is a Perry move that Wash doesn’t agree with, and therefore he is performing a mini-rebellion in which he’s deliberately not using him despite his full availability. I honestly didn’t expect to see Strickland last night, but he was the only best option to keep the game tied, I guess.

Rough news folks. They are adding 30 days to Rendon’s recovery time. Turns out he sprained his wrist changing channels on the TV remote. I heard he might have got a paper cut signing autographs and that might take him out another 30 days.

Had a friend who had one of these burned in on his television and he thought it was unbiased news. I told him about a media bias chart he could look up online by just searching the term and he figured the chart was biased and didn’t bother.
How does this relate to baseball?…

As Ron Washington dissected the Angels’ 6-5, 10-inning loss to the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, the Angels manager kept coming back to one point over and over.
“They beat us tonight,” said Washington, who is not shy about holding his own team accountable when they haven’t played up to his expectations. “It wasn’t like we kicked the ball all over the place and made mistakes and stuff like that. It was a solid ballgame. Somebody had to win and somebody had to lose. In the end, they got us.”

Fair enough, Wash. Yesterday was another well played game by the guys. Win today, take the series vs HOU, and go 4-2 on the Texas road trip. Nobody here will complain with that result.

Problem is, just saying it doesn’t make it happen. The team has to do it on the FIELD.

4-2 in our last 6. The 2 losses both came in extra innings at the hands of our leaky BP. Expand out another 2 games and even though we lost them, they were well played games that we lost because of (you guessed it) our BP.

We aren’t a good team.
We are also playing pretty decent ball right now.

These aren’t binary statements imo.

The Texas Extras is the one that hurts more. Texas was also sucking in bringing the ghost runner home that you just feel if the Angels did it in one those 4 innings, they would have won the game.

Last night’s extras had the air of inevitability, especially given Charlie’s record on pitching on two straight games, where he was already shaky the night before.

My mini-blame of the game last night was Logan’s 10th inning AB. Up 3-0 only to K, and stared at 2 straight FBs. That was the crucial point where you have to put the ball in play, whether it might ultimately be an out. The K by Adell was less his fault, especially as the ump called a K on a pitch outside while he called Esty’s exact pitch the next half inning a BALL!!!! It put Adell on a tight spot to defend.

I was troubled by that O’Hoppe at bat. I thought pitch #2 to Adell was a hose job. That pitch was a ball both before and after his at bat.

I think MLB has to do something about roster construction. If the bullpen is so short that Estevez had to pitch again last night, it’s time to approve another roster spot. Fresh pitchers should be available — it shouldn’t be a contest based on seeing which team can ruin the bullpen arms they have.

It all started going downhill when our starter barely made it through 5 innings. Four innings is a tall order to fill, which usually equates to four relievers.

Starters only going between 5 and 5 2/3 innings is a common issue for this team.

That grinds your BP and forces it to do what it cannot sustain, which is most of them pitching every single game.

We could use a couple of 3 inning guys.

Better than last year, and about average according to Google (too GA to look any deeper). Lately, more importantly for us, everyone except Detmers is keeping us in games. If it were me, I’d make Detmers and Estevez share a locker, and keep them away from the rest of the team until they straighten up and fly right.

MLB average start is-

5.1 innings per start

That started to trend downwards from 1980 to 1999 falling to 6.1 innings per start – from 2000 to 2019 it dropped to a twenty year average of 5.8 innings per start and from 2020 to 2023 it fell to 5 innings per start – that’s held true to form so far this season as the average is 5.1 innings per start. Wow, I thought this was just an Angels issue since it seems like everyone they play has a starter going into the 7th inning against the Angels with a pitch count of somewhere around 85 to 88 pitches.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I don’t think it’s even pitch count. I think a lot of pitchers have total crap OPS against in the third time through a batting order so 5 innings/18 ABs is all most guys get unless they are acing out.
