LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Uneasy Unrest

Morning Angels fans, have links or whatever.

Angels News

For the first time in the history of the MLB Network Top 100, Mike Trout is below Bryce Harper.

THIS IS OUTRAGE

This is because Trout is just not healthy anymore. He hasn’t played 120 games since 2019, 140 games since 2018, and 150 games since 2016.

What Trout can do is talk to “Mr. Stand up all day like he works in retail” and see if that is actually a good idea. It prolly isn’t.

Anyway, the new pitching coaches are looking to make the bullpen be more efficient. Which is great and all, but we shall see.

How do we see the roster anyway? Well, someone thinks it looks good if the Angels get a big starter.

Around Baseball

So the new jerseys are getting so bad that the union is looking to change it. Imagine if the owners try to use this in the next bargaining agreement, yeesh.

Amed Rosario is now on the Rays for 1/1.5M deal. Wait, seriously? The Rays spent money?!

Ryu went back to Korea. What the hell, the Angels could have topped THAT 4/12.7M deal.

Expansion us coming to MLB… eventually. This has been the longest MLB has waited between expansion teams since the original expansion team Angels. Which cities do you got? Do you want 4, or 8 team divisions?

Homer at the Bat is 32 years old. That is older than most of the current Angels roster.

MLB owners avoid taxes. Maybe this shows how they get away with it.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

Ryu signed an 8-year deal. For $12.4MM total. Interesting.

Boras will probably point to that and say Snell deserves at least 8 years now. 😀

Perry can say OK, for $20MM total.

Trout 10000000% came into camp slimmer than he’s been in years.

His face/neck is noticeably smaller

Today’s pictures– early 630am start to see what shots i could get in their home whiten picture day for Bally – mostly meh – but better than nothing

I heard their was a big Japanese TV interview with Trout & Rendon together on how things are/outlook without SO. Be nice if some one could find that link!

Interesting baserunning “discussion” today between EY and Bo – it went on for 10+ minutes on where exactly a runner on second should be when there is a shot to the wall. They had strong differing opinions too, and it was all playing out in front of the OFs, then the IFs showed up too. Wash just listened and watched lol.

If he retired tomorrow to be with his family full time? No. If it was a medical retirement ala Prince Fielder then I believe the team can reach a monetary settlement with the player but typically it’s probably just adding monetary deferment terms but at least the same remaining contract balance.

Seeing Ohtani in Dodger blue threads looks bizarre. Doesn’t fit him at all imho.

He will forever be an Angel.

I’m not trying to start anything btw. I just saw a pic of him in a Dodgers’ uni and it looks weird. That’s all lol

ROY, 2 MVP’s in red will be hard for Angel fans to forget. 10yrs, and what will be multiple championships, most will eventually just see him as blue, part of a Dodgers dynasty. And who knows how many more MVP’s he will get and also awards in championship series to cement his Dodgers legacy.

Beyond me hating the Dodgers, they are currently built to easily dominate MLB next 5yrs. You have 4 MVP’s on same team all playing at a high level (batting 1-2-3 ). Best starting rotation in league w/ out Ohtani who will be back in 25. Who is close, maybe Braves, Rangers, Phillies? The only team that can beat the Dodgers in playoffs are the Dodgers themselves. Poor clutch hitting, pitching mistakes, injuries. I hope they can continue that trend but they sure spent $$ to try to ensure they won’t choke anymore.

Just a few years ago the Blew Crew had starters galore and soon had to scramble to form a rotation as SP injuries piled up. Great teams on paper have to still play games on the field.

I, too, believe the Dodgers will win a couple rings over the course Ohtani’s contract and that would undoubtedly shift things. But like, what if they don’t?

Ohtani had the 3 greatest individual seasons (consecutively!) in baseball history as an Angel.

Yeah, probably just like Arte declined on Texeira.

The reason the Blew Crew signed him for $700M is probably because Arte said no and no longer was the rabbit in negotiations.

We heard that Nez went back to the Angels to see if they wanted to make a counter proposal. I don’t believe that anyone has reported that if Arte had matched the Doyers offer Ohtani would have accepted. if I recall the Giants ( as well as possibly the Blue Jays?) made similar offers to the Doyers but obviously The Unicorn picked the Blew crew

I’m creating the game threads and the kick off to this year’s schedule is pretty daunting.

We play 16 of our first 19 games against AL East opponents. One series at Baltimore then home and home series against the Sux and Rays. The one other series is three in Miami.

Then we get the Orioles again that month and head to Philly.

Since we tend to fare poorly against the East, it’s fair to say that getting off to at least a .500 start should be our early season goal.

I am enjoying the (Mostly) vitriol response to Rendone’s faith and family statement. I heard a lot of stones being thrown in the Sports Lodge last night on the drive home. Tony Two Lags’ biggest blunder, besides possibly not caring about baseball, is not being media savvy. He knows many media questions are objective, yet instead of verbal judoing it, he lets it linger.

That being said, I really hope no one on here will say their order is: Work, family, dog, in that case you’ll probably end up with a good job sitch, divorced and losing your dog to your ex. 😂 😂 :wpds_lol: :wpds_wink:

I built a successful company and managed a lot of people. I can tell you that attitude is everything in an employee. Leave the baggage at the door. That doesn’t mean that work has to be the first priority – obviously it is important to have balance and family always comes first. But that family relies on income in a reality based world – and that income comes from work (unless you get lucky and win the lottery or inherit a bunch of money). So for most folks, work has to be a significant priority in their lives and those who put it too far down in terms of priorities may not end up very happy from a compensation standpoint.

Where I have a problem is that Rendon is a highly compensated veteran on the team and with that comes some expectation of leadership. If I had a high level manager in my company saying these things publicly where the younger and more impressionable employees could be influenced, I would not be happy. If that manager wanted more life/work balance or wanted to go on a faith-based mission and came to me quietly and we discussed it, we could make some adjustments. But that would also likely come with lower compensation.

Work is hard but no one is going to pay you money to complain or bitch about it being hard. Rendon should know better. If he wanted to give up some of his $40 million per season to gain more balance in his life – then fine.

I will also say that people who do not make work enough of a priority and therefore cannot pay bills do not make very good spouses either.

OR – if Rendon had told Arte and the Angels about his general dislike for baseball and his desire for a shorter season and that he was not going to make baseball a top priority in his life BEFORE they signed him and management chose to sign him anyway – well that is a different story entirely. But Rendon signing that mega-deal knowing all of this and not disclosing it seems pretty questionable to me.

As an example, I hired an employee once who in the interview indicated she had two young children and could only give 25 hours a week since those children were her priority. I said that is fine but the compensation had to be lower and that she was expected to give her all during those 25 hours. She was fine with that and she ended up being a great employee during those 25 hours per week. But, if she had never told me and come in as a full time employee dedicated to the job she applied for and then it all came out later, we would have had a problem.

I’m self employed so my journey is a little different but I keep my faith and family center in my life.

Not to get all preachy but there is instruction in the Bible to “do all things for the glory of God.” In my case I carry my ethics to my career. In Rendon’s case he really has a chance to be an example of Christian values at work due to the exposure he gets as an athlete.

In short, it isn’t really an either/or between faith and work.

Self employment is a great way to create a priority system that works well for you. That way, your priorities can be managed to your satisfaction and not impact the “team” i.e. the workplace or the other workers. You get to be your own boss and set your own priorities. Rendon is not self employed.

But it also sets up more work/family conflict. I have to take the deals as they come to put food on the table. I don’t have a set schedule like Rendon. I don’t have months off every year to spend with my son.

No work situation is ideal, I get that. But using faith as a reason to not work hard is a cop out and runs counter to the instructions in the good book.

Fansince1971

“Faith” is such a buzz word and, when improperly applied, an excuse. What are we supposed to say about Rendon when he uses “Faith” to explain his attitude. He knows that word will buy him some PR currency since we are all brought up to respect individual’s religious rights and freedoms.

As you point out, “Faith” should never be used as an excuse not to work hard. In fact, the whole concept of faith IS to work hard and be dedicated, disciplined, focused and determined.

With what you are saying, work and earning money is a high priority in your life as it should be. When you can make family and faith your top priority – you do. But then when work comes calling and needs attention, you give it its proper due.

Look, Rendon has enough money and has that luxury. SO, if he really wants to make faith and family the focus of his life – he can retire. Very few people have that luxury. He does. So if he wants to be a man of his words – hang up the spikes.

I’m not seeing where Rendon’s not “working hard”. I can see where he’s not overly concerned about baseball… and he should probably make more noises about “grinding” and “getting back” if he wants to keep the stupid people happy with quotes. I’m just not finding what Rendon’s out there “faithing” in place of…. is he not getting injuries repaired? Is he not doing PT? Is he not currently in Tempe? What did I miss?

Or did he just fail to look upset enough for us while he’s had a shit ton of down time?

Had this discussion with a buddy. Hell, work is not my top priority. I show up, I do my job, they pay me. It’s not my number one thing.

Seems that Rendon has this attitude. The difference, I guess, is that we are paying to see him work. As long as he puts the effort in when he’s playing and practicing, I’m fine with it.

Or should you all be upset that I don’t place my current job above everything else?

I think there’s a big difference between doing your best when you’re doing something and…. what ever the fk CtPG Guy is looking for here. There are certain things I am very good at. I get paid to do them. When I am doing them, I am very focused.

Then, I’m done. I don’t usually think about them at all in my spare time. I watch crap baseball teams and read sad losers comment about those teams on the internet. I drink. Or hike. Or talk to donkeys. Or something. Then, later, I focus on “my stuff” some more.

It’s just not that shocking that Rendon isn’t sitting there lathered up waiting for more baseball and baseball activity every waking hour. Especially when all he’s doing is rehabbing. I’m sure he’s more into baseball when he’s playing baseball… but at 11pm at night he’s having sex with his wife…. or someone on here’s wife…. or watching the WWE…. I dunno.

Guess what kids, a lot of the time astronauts don’t think about space too. It’s normal. It’s just not the lip service sad sack fanman demands. It’s not like Rendon keeps taking time off to focus on raping hotel workers in Colorado and putting out bad hip hop singles.

You make some good points ’71. However, I would venture to guess that you weren’t handing out $100 million plus long-term guaranteed contracts to your employees. I really question the sanity of handing out such to players who (very early in their careers) are literally set for life. Where is the incentive to excel in a situation where failed journeymen can hang around for years and be offered million dollar deals?

Fansince1971

Reply to  toad2065

That’s why I think, fully vetting players ( hiring investigators to talk to prior teammates, family and friends) and really getting a sense of their commitment to playing baseball is critical before handing out those type of contracts. Injuries can happen obviously so there’s always risk and those things can be insured – but a bad attitude or a lack of interest in playing the game cannot be insured, so I would think it would be any organizations interest to see if they were courting a player whose attitude was more like Jeter versus Rendon.

Well according to Mickey Moniak, he has praised Rendone’s leadership and mentoring of the younger players. Claiming this offseason that he has been extremely helpful even being able to call or text the Ingrate multiple times for guidance on hitting, opposing pitching or other baseball related issues.

So maybe at least his workplace demeanor is not a complete cancer to the ball club as the many uninformed at this site have portrayed him to be.

Perhaps not, but I’ve never heard him say he feels bad or frustrated with being injured and not able to help the team or performing poorly when he was healthy. He’s being paid as if he is one of the top 5 players in the league and he’s been less than replacement level the last 3 years. He’s specifically made public statements that baseball is just a job and has implied that it’s not important. That is not endearing to anyone and even though the injuries are not his fault, his poor performance is. He was a 150-160 OPS+ player the 3 years prior to joining the Angels and it’s not like he’s been just a 130 OPS+ player. He’s been under 100, and everytime he opens his mouth he reminds everyone that Baseball is not important. Whether it’s true or not, he’s doing everything he can to convince people that he really doesn’t care. I’m shocked that his agent hasn’t tried to help him improve his image a little. He’s never even implied that he’s working hard to recover or return. I hope he has a great year but he constantly remind us that the owner made a terrible mistake and has allowed Rendon’s contract to cripple the team the last 3 years. Right or wrong, Rendon has a really bad public image and has done absolutely nothing to attempt to mitigate it. He’s either really clueless, or he really is a bad guy and neither one speaks well of him.

His agents job is already done. He’s not getting another contract. If anything, he may get faith based endorsements and/or paid speaker at ‘special’ events for such causes. If he’s tithing 10% and kicking back something to his coworkers (like QBs do to their offensive linemen) I don’t see why anyone would speak out against him. I don’t know why this same conversation happens on here day after day after day. I/we get it, he’s done nothing to endear himself to the team/fans that we know of. There’s a growing list of players that have donned Red that have similar stories. None of this is new. Anyone know if Ohtani wipes front to back, back to front, or is strictly bidet?!

If a worker is a family, faith, work person, so be it. As long as they have talent and can get the job done when called upon. O’Hoppe was interviewed talking about the help Rendon provided him in the off-season. The radio guys noted they have spoken with many Angels and feedback on Rendon is positive. If Anthony didn’t get hurt, all would be fine. People are starting to turn on Trout due to injuries too. It’s part of the game sadly.

BTW is the owner’s top priority winning? Is he spending more time operating other business or trying to get extra benefits from land deals?

Is the GM making smart deals for players? How was Madden treated at the end? How about Pujols?

Let the season play out and don’t chase all of the misdirection practiced by the media and others. Let’s hope the Angels somehow are decent and acquire more talent. And let Rendon, Trout and others try to be healthy and play well.

It’s got to be really galling for the various angry losers on this site that, even though he’s a gaff a minute right now, and obviously keeps getting hurt, having surgery, getting shins broken, etc because he hates playing baseball and is lazy, Rendon’s still far tougher, stronger, more athletic, more successful and likely even smarter than any of us. Raise your hand if you think you can get into Rice University…. and you’re not Red Floyd. Hell, he’s even better looking than most of us.

His career’s in the pits right now and he’s still just plain better than just about everyone who complains about him in every way. Which is why we need to bitch about the man having his priorities strait and not giving a fk about impressing a pile of fat chode baseball fans who are all collectively humping a pillow that smells like Ohtani at night, lying awake wondering if Shohei and his mom will sometimes remember them fondly in those quiet moments in the Dodger clubhouse before games.

If he wins the MVP this year or is at least in the race he’d fetch something. And I have to believe he has at least one such season left if he can avoid the freak injuries.

It’s just my perception but I think Trout doesn’t have the personality to push on anything. He seems to avoid conflict. Who can blame him – but it certainly does NOT result in a ‘win at all costs’ attitude. My guess is he is perfectly happy playing professional baseball in Southern California, raising his son with his wife in a beautiful home – win or lose. I am truly happy for him but from a team perspective that complacency may not result in the best leader.

So the two main and highest paid veterans on the team can be described as follows:

1. Not enjoying playing baseball and hating the long season;

2. Complacent and accepting of not winning.

Not a lot of leadership there in my opinion b

I disagree with complacent, at least in regards to Trout. He works out too d@mn hard in the off-season and is too involved with Angels MGMT to be accused of that.

I also don’t have a problem with Rendon’s faith and family first statement. What he should’ve done (I am no media expert) was too realize how he sounded and ended with, “But, I am here in Arizona working hard for our 2024 season.”

IMHO Rendone is starting to sound like Barry Bonds’ media interactions in his last couple of seasons.

By complacent I mean about the team’s performance not his own. He definitely is demanding of himself and, I am sure, frustrated by the last 3 season’s injuries. But my perception is he does not get too upset when the team loses. Maybe he does but I don’t see it.

As for Rendon – he should stick his jock in his mouth.

Okay (Bows towards 1971) I see now what you’re saying. But, we don’t know what convos Trout has had with Halo MGMT and besides, like I said last year, if he poured ridicule on MGMT, and I was part of said MGMT, I’d remind Trout that he hasn’t been on the field too much to influence success for the team in a few years. I think Trout knows that and knows he needs to be on the field more.

I’ll bite. Perhaps it’s difficult to project leadership when he hasn’t played a full season in a loooong time.

Co-workers don’t like to be led by the guy who’s oft-absent.

Yeah, but he wasn’t really even showing leadership (other than playing unbelievably great) to my vision when he had MVP seasons. He is not the kind of guy who gets into other players faces when they are not performing or points out that they are hurting the team. Or maybe he is and we just don’t see it because it’s behind closed doors.

SP depth on the 40-man:

Reid Detmers
Patrick Sandoval
Griffin Canning
Tyler Anderson
Chase Silseth

Jose Suarez
Zach Plesac
Davis Daniel
Kenny Rosenberg

Sam Bachman
Victor Mederos
Jack Kochanowicz

I’ll be paying very close attention to the development of Bachman and Mederos this year. Caden Dana and Barrett Kent are not on the 40-man, and we sorely need them both to pan out. Depending on how the future plays out for those 4, maybe Perry will have actually fixed the dearth of SP in the pipeline.

You know I looked at our depth chart yesterday too. I actually went huh, we aren’t that bad for the first time in many many years. Yes we don’t have the ace, but we have a good group of talent to “develop” over the next few years.

We are thin up the middle. 2B, SS depth isn’t great, and few to little OF prospects. Excpect that in the upcoming draft and with trades at the deadline.

I’ve been (mostly) on the “no big ticket free agents in 2024” train this offseason and it appears that the Angels agree, but a Blake Snell or Montgomery would slot in quite nicely with what we have. Relying too heavily on Tyler Anderson is not….ideal.

People tend to forget that while Shohei pitched great the first 2 months of 2023, he wasn’t very good over his last 2-3 months.

Montgomery, yes, Snell, no.

We can expect Montgomery to pitch 30 to 50 more innings than Snell. That alone has value. Those innings costing less is a big bonus.

There’s a lot of youth in this rotation. Be nice to have a veteran leader. Perhaps that is Anderson, but his suckage last year makes me hope not.

And then there’s all the guys we threw away for short rentals at the trade deadline last year. Quero is probably a better prospect than anyone we currently have. I don’t mind moving him, but we got absolutely nothing in return.

IMHO that QO penalty shouldn’t apply to a team, at least not a high pick, that finishes fourth or worst in their division.

That is the deciding factor for me. Should the club go big at the last moment, let it be Montgomery for this reason alone.

As for Bachman, my concern is that if he can’t stay healthy out of the pan, is it realistic to expect him to remain healthy as a starter? I wouldn’t know, but on the surface, it seems questionable.

Arm health is a little easier to manage with a starter. You know when you’re going to pitch and you don’t warm up/warm down/pitch spontaneously throughout the week.

Detmers and Sandy have it in them to go toe to toe with any team’s ace. If they can be consistently not horrible, we could be sneaky good. Let’s see what the new coaching staff can get out of them.

The only way to make large corporations and multi-millionaires and Billionaires to pay taxes is to make things easier is to start taxation off very low with no write offs and have gradual increases, no write offs or bonus for kids, no equipment write offs, etc., and every segment pays what they owe.

So Boras got Ryu a deal in Korea. That’s the best they could get I suppose. And the money is like $3 million per year. Yikes. Not sure why the Angels couldn’t bring him in for $4 million — although they likely would have said one year deal only.

No movement on the “Big 4” or JD. Let’s hope at least Urshela signs soon with the Angels.
