LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: WC time

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

Perry the GM had a press conference and while he blamed himself for the team’s failings, they will not rebuild in 2024, but compete. Yeah, this has Arte written all over it.

MiLB player Kevin Padlo has become a free agent. Yeah, we really can’t let the farm lose what little it has left.

Angels like a stock Market Crash

Around Baseball

Playoff time, which means a chart for everyone.

Who you got?

The Twins have finally won a playoff game after 18 straight losses. Yes, seriously, 18 losses. It also means the Angels have gone the longest since a playoff win.

Rangers won their game 1. It was yet another win for Texas over TB as they seem to have their number. AT least the stadium was mostly empty.

Sneks ate the Brewers in their G1. Brewers really could use Woodruff right now.

Luis Arraez promised the Marlins would win this WC series vs the Phillies. Phillies win game 1.

And the A’s did not thank their fans after all eliminated teams did. Yesh.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

Did anyone know BIll Haselman is only 57 years old. I honestly thought he was wearing his age on third. He moves out there like a T-Rex trying to tie his shoes.

Maybe we should raid our broadcasting team and make Salmon, GA, and Gubi into Managers and coaches. And Pujols while we’re at it. And get Finley and Weave for pitching coaches.

Puppet in the dugout.

And we crowd source CTPG for the roster building, roster changes, daily lineups, (keep PTP on to do the paperwork) hire Kaiser (after the strike) for the medical, rotation of celebrity chefs, nutritionists, fitness trainers. Have Arte foot the bill, stay within his budget. And…..

I guarantee you we improve on our record from the last two years.

Why does no one have fond memories of 2003? It was virtually the same team, minus the winning.

NAR! 2002 was no lucky blip that went all the way because of awesome fan juju! That would mean that Arte had something to do with the team winning post 2002 instead of just inheriting everything from Disney.

Such thoughts are not allowed.

Gubi as Manager or pitching coach, Langston as a pitching coach, GA/Salmon, Hocking, Bobby V would be step up – impart some pride and a winning culture in the organization instead of what we have.

Talk about Hopium. It’s the same old, tired rant. It’s not 1975 anymore – Sparky, Tommy, and Earl are dead. Managers don’t make a difference like they once could by firing up the troops. That kind of respect for the skipper is long gone.

Do you really think Trout would be intimidated by a “gritty, scrappy, fiery” manager? How about Tony 2Bags? Sit me all season, and I’ll collect my millions…

TBH, I think Gubi might make a good pitching coach. The way he analyzes what a pitcher is doing makes me think that.

least accurate dream of the year: mine, when we were 55-53. I dreamt (is that an obsolete spelling? dreamed?) that we won 7 in a row, lost a game, then won 6 more in a row to be 68-54. Yes, 13 of 14 wins. Well, no, that didn’t happen.

most memorable managerial quote: (and I mean we’ll talk about it for years) “you can’t go chasing wins every night”

biggest GM disaster: trading away top prospects for “upgrades”, then waiving most of the new vets after 3 weeks.

Worst owner move: not selling the team because of “unfinished business”

If the A’s move and new stadium makes them enough money to be competitive, and the ANgels continue their course of action (which there is no reason to believe they won’t) the Angels can look forward to being a last place team in the West until ownership changes.

Up the freeway, Th Dodgers appear to have figured out how to grow a team like Tampa, while spending like big market team. Aside from not winning a real WS, they will be finishing first until ownership changes. I heard on the radio, they actually had more people on the IL than any other team and still won 100 games.

Dodgers were #1 in days lost to injuries (2,465), while the Giants were #1 in players placed on the IL (46). The Angels were #2 in both categories (42 players totaling 2,346 days lost).

6 of the 8 teams with the fewest days lost made the playoffs, including Houston, Toronto, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Houston also had the fewest players placed on the IL (13) followed by Arizona, Cleveland, and Seattle (tied for 18).

I’m liking these creepy-old-timey-Indian pictures. What tribe are they from? I’m thinking O’Hoppe might like to make a catchers helmet out of that mask. One other thought, if the Cleveland Indians had a bad ass traditional Indian like that for a mascot instead of the that cartoonish Indian would they still be the Indians?

Free the Indian medicine man for trainer next year! I’m sure he’s got some sweet as Wild Berry and a Tree Bark tea that would stop all the oblique tears.

Didn’t love Perry’s presser yesterday. Fortunately, Dipoto’s comments to the media were even worse lol.

Jerry Dipoto says he operates with a 10-year plan to win 54% of the time.

“We’re actually doing the fanbase a favor in asking for their patience to win the World Series while we continue to build a sustainably good roster.”

The Fan base better do what he says or he’ll walk out on them too.

This year he helped Arizona build a sustainably good roster by trading them a key bullpen piece. 2024 will be year 9 with Jer Jer at the helm.

What a Douche.

He used the word “sustainably” for reason. It’s a soothing, calming phrase for the hippie’s up there. A sustainable baseball farm system is nice….Think of the Angels system with all the waste. The constant air travel, the perpetual roster re-buildings, all the processed food, poor nutrition leading to the many pelvic fractures, the sleep deprived, poor mental health from dealing with daily failures, the poor coaching and training. That’s not sustainable.

To state the obvious, there seems to be a disconnect between Perry’s expectations and the actual results of losing 16 more games than you win (17 games short of a playoff spot). That’s a big miss and a giant overestimation of your talent. And after these results, Perry and Phil are still saying “We think we’re real close.” The organization’s performance is disgraceful. Since 2015, the trend has been downward.

Will never understand the leash Dipoto has up there. Sure, the roster looks pretty good but that better be the case after he was afforded 2 different tear downs and has traded a closer in 2 of the last 3 seasons when they were in contention.

Dude is the definition of mediocre yet he gets some kind of mad genius reputation because of his roster ADHD.

99-63 and $79M payroll lost to TX Rangers at 90-72 BUT WITH A $251M PAYROLL.
Plus the Milwaukee Brewers with their loss to the AZ D-Backs. Expect 2 out of first round small market teams to get knocked out. None will win the World Series, so congrats still to the 2015 Kansas City Royals
BOTTOMLINE SMALL MARKET LOW OPERATING BUDGET TEAMS STILL DON’T WIN IN THE MLB POST SEASON.

For those that think overwhelming talent in a lineup is necessary to make the playoffs, take a look at the lineups that played yesterday for the DBacks and Brewers. It’s about pitching and timely hitting.

TB Rays exemplify what you’re talking best with 99 wins and a $79M payroll, however these teams you’re mentioning ain’t winning the WS either. Until they go up against the Astros, Braves, Dodgers, Phillies, and Rangers. All 5 of these teams have big budgets and payrolls over $220M.

Appreciate what the Rays are doing but there is no reason to have a $79M payroll. They do show that good management and coaching can help maximize what you can do with the talent you have.

Kind of condemning of the Halos organization in that they have pretty high payroll every year and yet can’t even finish with a winning record, much less make the playoffs.

I’ve made up my mind and conceded that with this owner (since we don’t have Stan Kroenke) that I’ll take what TB does any day over what we’ve done since 2015. Quite frankly I’m also confident that the fans would still show up to see this team with a bunch of obscure no name players like TB, if they’re winning and in the playoffs. Sadly I don’t think our owner believes that however.

Noted. But after making the playoffs a couple years in a row, we can reach the next threshold of whether there is enough talent to win it all. Progress would be helpful. BTW the Royals won it all within the last ten years and didn’t have overwhelming talent. Pitching was key.

Well I think trout plays the game fine. Just because he isn’t a loud mouth or aggressive towards his teammates doesn’t take away his impact on the game. Harper has been this way since his team has been relevant/making the playoffs where as trout’s team really hasn’t.

The only two I would want on that list are Bruce, who is not available, and Buck. Ray Montgomery has been helping Phil make decisions all year, so if you didn’t like Phil’s decisions, you shouldn’t be hiring Ray Montgomery. Not saying I want him, but Buck would provide professionalism, stability and credibility, and would be a good guy to mentor the next manager. I don’t know much about the Astro’s bench coach.
