Angels Get Swept in the Doubleheader and the Series; Lose the Nightcap 7-3

Just like this afternoon’s game, there’s really not much good to talk about after game 2 of the day-night doubleheader. Shohei was back in the lineup after completely leaving the afternoon game both as a pitcher and a hitter. Apparently he’s not that injured, just probably physically spent at this point without any adrenaline to keep him going in this lost season. Also, after “Trout Is Back” day, he was out of the lineup for both games today due to “soreness”. But hey, Squid was in the lineup for both games! At least something can bring us joy still!

Anywho, on the pitching side, Reid Detmers hit the bump for this game and was not horrible, not good. He went 5 innings at least, giving up 4 runs. Definitely not the no-hit version today. The damage against him all occurred in the 3rd and 4th innings, first thanks to a Spencer Steer RBI single scoring that guy, De La Cruz. In the 4th inning it was a Tyler Stephenson 2 RBI homer, followed by a Matt McClain RBI single.

Soriano and Lopez pitched a couple of scoreless innings, but Matt Moore was not on today, giving up 3 runs in the 8th to really put the game out of reach. It started with a grounder that scored a runner from 3rd base, but then homeboy McClain hit another homer to give the Reds a 4 run lead that they would not relinquish.

Defensively, Moniak made a nice catch in the second inning.

On the Halo offense side, the biggest positive was Nolan Schanuel continuing to get on base, whether by walks or singles. He got his first big league RBI in the second inning, which gave the Angels an early 1-0 lead, scoring Ohtani.

He ended up 2 for 3 with 2 walks after going 1 for 1 with 3 walks in the first game today. He got on base 8 times today. Hopefully he develops some strength and hits for some power as he matures, because his knack for hitting seems to be the real deal.

Rengifo also had a nice day, driving in the other 2 runs the Angels scored going 3 for 4 earlier in the day.

A few more runners got on base against Alexis Diaz in the 9th, but as has been the case a lot lately, none of it was enough. Angels get swept with a 7-3 loss.

Yes Elly, Shohei is real.

I am in agreement with Mr Downing that we probably won’t make the playoffs. 😬
There are some talented players on this Angels team, but as far as plate discipline, leadership and team chemistry it’s a fail all around. The Pitching is unreliable and predictably bad. Trout has a huge contract and seemingly falling apart and Rendone never really showed anything but still cashes those big checks. It must be difficult for any current angels player on down to the minors to be associated with Arte and this franchise. It’s time for him to move on to other things and hopefully the new owner will be one that makes better decisions for the fans and franchise while caring about the minor league system and its players. This has been an embarrassment. We are playing close to the Oakland A’s level of failure with way more talent than them while the Mariners are showing us how it’s done. Just embarrassing. 😡

Ok, honestly, should we relocate the team after all? Like, could we nuke this entire franchise, pretend it never existed. Then create a new team called the CA Angels, and build it somewhere not on a Tonga ceremonial site, though preferably not too far, and we’ll start off fresh!

I hear Salt Lake City (home of the Bees!) is looking for a big league team. 😄

Kinda hoping the Angels just go the A’s route next season. Let all the free agents walk. Cut bait on Ren-done. Trade Trout to whoever is willing to take on half his contract for the 80 games per year of barely above average production he’s likely to provide the rest of his career (he’s basically late career Pujols right now, but hurt more often). Just commit to being terrible for a while. Bummer will be wasting Neto, O’Hoppe, and Schanuel, but it’s going to be at least six or seven years until they’re competitive again. Which is fine. We went 1986 to 2002 being perennially crappy aside from one season where they were good before one of the most historic chokes in baseball history.

I’m honestly on board with this. The sooner we rip the band-aid off the better. Though instead of band-aid it’s more like body cast.

I’m on board as long as the current ownership is not involved in the rebuild.

I can’t imagine Nevin lasts very long considering this season is completely done. I’m sure he’s going to catch a lot of heat for letting Shohei go for the length he did–especially in outings like the one versus Detroit. Ironically, I could totally see Shohei re-signing with us at this point.

Since I didn’t play baseball past 12 years old or on travel clubs or even little league or high school, I really don’t know what makes a good baseball manager. But wow Nevin is horrible just based on his lack of anything. He’s a real 0 on this team and you can’t have a guy not pulling his weight when you’re trying to be competitive

It’s time to pray y’all!

Lord if ya listening help!!?? We are sorry for whatever Arte did to deserve this curse you have placed on our franchise lord. The bad contracts.. and Anthony Rendon the Pope of bad contracts.. as if that wasn’t enough to endure lord the rash of injuries on this team have been unprecedented and consistent year in and year out.. this year alone lord by far the most IL stints in the game. Taylor Ward literally had his face fractured by a fastball and now Ohtani with a UCL amongst all that trauma.

We the fans of this team called the Angels lord.. your children come to you humbled and asking for a reprieve. Please bring us good fortunes from this day forward lord.

We pray amen.

Shohei’s next team will obviously have him bat, but he could also become a closer. That would extend his career. It wouldn’t faze him to pitch two innings.

What does this injury
cost Shohei? I’d guess at least 200 million in total dollars on his next contract.

I don’t think anyone offers ten years for him this offseason. I think he gets a 2-3 year deal with an opt out after the first or second year. We might just keep him for a few years after all.

Imagine the angels with ohtani in 2024. Really exciting to think about and I’d like our playoff odds if we snag him in free agency.

Arte is 100% going to offer him a 10 year $400 million contract and lock him in. And at this rate Ohtani will be a fool to not sign that.

Interesting, right?

I say that he should get acquainted with an OF’s glove. I also like the possible idea of him being a bullpen piece.

So much good news, eh? Geez.

So Trout is basically on the IL for “Pain Tolerance” ?

I feel awful for Shohei. Just awful.

They just announced that Ohtani won’t pitch again in 2023 due to a torn UCL. Make sure and ask for a triple shot in that next drink.

This organization is delusional. They decided to go all in knowing that their star player was hurt. Instead of making the hard decisions that would allow them to be competitive in 2 years. Just wow.

In fairness, it seems highly unlikely that he had this injury prior to the trade deadline. He pitched several games and went deep in them for the most part ..

Will probably bat the rest of the season and TJ at season end. Sign a 2 year contract with the Angels to recover and prove he can pitch again.

Japanese newspaper sports section headlines Sho’s injury as I am typing this. It amazes me that he even decided to play the second game. (He had a hustle double in that game.) While I am surprised and saddened, Sho is the most shocked and disappointed of the news.

I did not hear that it was completely torn; I am going to assume partially torn ligament, so it is second grade. I am sure Dr. Neal ElAttrache will evaluate and gives recommendations regarding surgery or no surgery.

If surgery, then he will repeat what happened in 2019 and not throw baseball at all next season, and he will return to pitching sometime in 2025.

If he decides to stick to hitting only, assuming that the tear was partial with an option of letting heal by itself (over 4-6 months), he might be able to convert himself to OF or 1B.

There are many permutations of options he will have to consider, but I have a feeling that he will travel to New York to continue to DH for the remainder of the season.

If Shohei is a full-time OF in 2024 for the Angels, I certainly wouldn’t hate it at all. I’d be very curious to see the type of numbers he’d put up in his physical prime whilst focused solely on hitting (and OF defense). I would presume LF.

Trout likely won’t play again this season. Maybe a little at the end if he takes another month off. Shohei will likely hit some. That’s it.

Angels will wind up about 75-87. Ugly results after there being hope earlier in the season.

They should have never brought him back. There’s no reason to, the season is lost. Just let him rest and return healthy in 2024, if that’s even possible.
