MLB is reviewing Saturday’s exchange between Oliver Marmol and C.B. Bucknor. What do you all think? I couldn’t find the poll widget. Sorry. Just give us your comments.
- Undisclosed fine for Bucknor for being an ass
- MLB does nothing whatsoever
- Undisclosed fine for Marmol for griping
- A suspension for not shaking hands
- Manfred makes a meaningless joint Press Release with someone from the umpires union
- Bucknor forced to apologize
- Something else

I hope it’s 7 (CB Fired), but it’s gonna be 2.
So much unions. So much nothing gets done. So much soccer = America’s game 2040. Yay, feather boas.
What will happen is probably #5. And then business as usual fro the umpires, as they are never held accountable by either baseball or their own union.
Baseball is all meritocracy for the players, bullshit for the umpires.
Here is an extreme example of the benefit of the pitch clock: Talkin’ Baseball on Twitter: “Entire half inning with pitch clock vs. one pitch without pitch clock https://t.co/pdEcXExEbt” / Twitter
If you were one of the worst players in the league year after year, you would be released. Even with a guaranteed contract. That Bucknor and guys like Angel are always ranked terribly, perhaps the next union deal needs to be a way to get rid of the dredge and replace them with up-and-comers.
It kind of gave me the willies to think of Angel Hernandez on the same crew with Bucknor.
I’m going with a bland statement that MLB looked into it and found no evidence this will impact games.
Given how absolutely horrible Bucknor already is, it will be impossible to show he’s gotten worse.
The umpires union sucks for keeping him in the game.
Say Union? Yes?
Baseball never fails to remind me of how weird the differences between US unions and say unions in Germany work. In Germany they really are sort of a “partner” with industry & govt. In the US they create Detroit and the DMV and Josh Hamilton.
Just boys being boys…who cares.
This is kind of why I didn’t link the original story on Monday. Then MLB decided to stick their oar in and I decided it’s about time to break out the popcorn.
Being fired for being a crappy ump would be the best, regardless. Fine and suspension next best.
Man… I miss the bad old days when you could fire people for repeated constant failure.
I vote # 1, undisclosed fine for Bucknor for being an ass.
Here’s the Jomboy breakdown on the original call: Manager tells umpire he needs to retire, a breakdown – YouTube
As pointed out in the video, both sets of announcers make comments showing they know how bad Bucknor is. One group was betting on which manger would be ejected first, and the other team’s announcer burst out laughing when the terrible call was made.
For the record, Bucknor was the worst umpire among those with at least 20 games last year in terms of both accuracy and consistency. His bad calls are also among the most impactful in terms of favoring the home team and being made during high leverage situations. A true nightmare for MLB players, managers, and fans alike: Umpire Scorecards | Umpires (umpscorecards.com)
Bucknor and Eddings really need to be fired.
