LA Angels Thursday New Crash: Self Inflicted

The Padres activated Mike Clevinger for the NLDS. A couple of other pitchers took themselves out of the post season with self inflicted injuries. Phil Maton of the Astros seems to be the stupider of the two.

The Angels affiliates have been working Werner Blakey out at third base. Let’s see how he does in the AFL. Maybe next year he could end up with the Trash Pandas. Hey! The Angels tied with the Dodgers for worst possible landing spot for Dansby Swanson. Oh well. News flash! Perry Minasian says he needs to work on improving the Angels overall depth.

Joe Espada and Pedro Grifol are candidates to the Marlins field manager position. It’s that time of the year where teams are assessing their options. Ji-Man Choi appears to have fallen victim to the Jared Walsh syndrome of declining production and excessive strikeouts.

Who wants to go work for the New York Yankees?

Waiver Wire Action

The Tigers claimed Jermaine Palacios and designated Drew Hutchison for assignment. Meanwhile, the Red Sox claimed Caleb Hamilton and designated Abraham Almonte for assignment. For their part, the Orioles claimed Jake Cave and designated Jake Reed for assignment.

If Arte wasn’t selling the team, I’d be more afraid of the Correa opts out of his contract news. But as such, I don’t think we need to worry about big splashes this offseason.

It would be hilarious if Arte chose violence and just bloated the payroll to 350… extend Ohtani, sign Correa, sign five pitchers, sign a LF, etc…. just go ape shit. Then peace out, payroll is NewOwnerz problem.

That will probably make a lot of fans here in CtPG very happy!

Sure, we need a Game#2 starter or its Sandy or Detmers.

But lets spend! We scored 623 runs this year.

if i look at b-ref, that is the least amount of runs scored for this franchise in a non-strike/covid year since 1992. 30 years ago.

We need a few big splashes or we will be grilling cheeseburgers and betting on football games next October too.

We need an OF and a SS – Judge/Turner. Or sign Turner(CF)/Correa (SS). Or Swanson.

Arte is about is get $3B for this team -he should stock the cupboard, bake a cake and put out fresh flowers for the new owners.

Happy for 3 years, angry for 7…. also 0 guaranteed championshits. And trust me, cause I’ve seen it, these people will bitch and moan like someone stabbed them with a spoon if we make the poste season eight times but don’t win the WS the same way they bitch about not being over .500.

When is a championship ever guaranteed though?

If we sign Rodon, DeGrom, Correa, Abreu and Judge, a championship is guaranteed.

I know that will never happen, so no one can prove me wrong.

Nothing is ever guaranteed. No team displays that fact more than ours. Unless you’re CtPG guy. Then you demand guarantees. You also demand a 60 man roster of goodness for when players unexpectedly snap in half or forget how to play baseball because they got sick of needles or lost their pill connect.

Correa makes $35mil a year and is opting out so he can “take care” of his family, meaning he’ll want more, obviously. That would mean more per year than Trout. So, no.

How big is his family if 35 mil does not “take care” of his family most be about half the population of a small country. I can only dream of making 35 mil in my entire lifetime and I have take pretty good care of my family.

Taking care of the family always reminds me of that SI Article about Latrell Sprewell rejecting his contract extension since he “had a family to feed”

Classic, I forgot all about that douche bag. He was/is everything that’s wrong with professional sports, a bad dude, teammate, not coachable, all for himself, everything, he makes Alex Johnson, Barry Bonds, ARod, every other self serving, greedy athlete look like a prince.

I was just thinking about that recent article covering excerpts from Maddon’s book, and pondering the message that seemed to be analytics was ultimately making the game less entertaining. I can maybe see where they are coming from in a reductionist sense, but I’ll be darned if I didn’t find that Padres/Dodgers game entertaining. I feel that the general consensus is that the Dodgers are pretty high up on the “numbers crunchers-r-us” spectrum from what I can gather, and the last decade probably has been pretty “entertaining” for their fans I’d wager too.

Winning. Winning is fun. So is being with the players. So is playing a video game with a bunch of cheat codes…. which is what an analytics dept is trying to do for a manager if they’ll let them.

Lookin at you Soth.

I think the old school vs number crunching dichotomy is grossly exaggerated. The stories coming out of LAD, HOU, and STL (TB to a lesser degree, I think) is that they are committed to both numbers and old school, of being aware of limits and strengths if both and using each to complement the other, and, I feel like this shows in their products on field.

Yah. The idea that a manager can’t work with analytics just because he’s old is totally bonkers. I have always assumed that a lot of “old men” can actually look at all this analytics stuff and think “Holy crap, I can totally use this stuff and win myself some rings….” and we see that with guys like Shoewalter and Dusty, Bob Melvin….

I think it’s really more just an ego thing. Some guys are very in love with the magic of managing a team and want to be seen as a grand wizard. If a GM and his nerds start messing with that grandness while adding a bunch of meetings and work and charts that hurt their brain and make them feel put upon and insecure. From what I read, even younger guys can do this. Like Andy Green in SD.

Then you also have guys like Joe Maddon who are just pussy ass snitch bitches who either need a line up like the Cubs bought for him or Andrew Freidman (and the drive/humility of a man who hasn’t succeeded yet) in order to do jack shit. Then morph into TikTok Sally when they fail.

Yah. All those analyst heavy teams like the Indians, Rays, Cardinals, Astros, A’s, Braves, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Padres, Brewers, Red Sox, Yankees, Giants, Twins…. all I ever hear from those team’s fans is how miserable and bored they are, year after year after year, and how they wish their managers would put on a zany blazer, quote Dylan Thomas, shave out a desperate old man mohawk and put the fat old DH in to pitch cause guts+grit+strategery = winz.

Not that I want to do Minasian’s job for him, but how about free agents Tommy Pham, Michael Brantley, or Corey Dickerson on a low to medium one-year contract to fill the gaping LF hole.

I think you are in the right track. I’m actually looking forward to what a Mancini contract will look like and if we can fit that into our plans. I’ve got some trades to pursue and change up the roster a bit. Is payroll of $195M an agreeable #?

Good Gawd!!
Mancini strikes out a lot. Why not get Taylor Ward out of RF where he’s a big defensive liability and move him to 1B and then trade Jered Walsh (can’t hit lefties a lick) and Jo Adell who’s a bust both defensively and offensively before he gets even worse for pitching.

I want Mancini pretty bad. Hits? Yes. Can play OF? Yes. Can spell Walsh against LHP? Yes. Is a cool guy? Yes. Can DH? Yes, if /when we trade Ohtani.

I’m no POBO with incredible unnamable Jehovah type baseball powers that are totally different than a GMs weak shit, like Jon Daniels and Dayton Moore, but I think Mancini pretty much fits the bill as a guy who will impact our roster specifically in a good way.

Not a bad idea. I’d grab which ever has the least bad lack of defensive diversity (Dickerson?). Or which ever will compliment Adell best. I’d also do it understanding that this move has a good chance of not producing much and thus being something CtPG guy bitches about endlessly for nine months.

For cowBOI on why the Giants lost 26 more games than 2021.
How about $191M in 2021 down to $169M in 2022 (especially letting go of Kevin Gausman to Toronto). The Giants had MLB’s oldest team in 2021 and older players tend to make more money (except for YOO NOH HOO who uses temporary employment agencies and Zip Recruiter to scout and fill out our 25 man roster (GOOD GAWD!!! YOURE DAMM CHEAP….) SORSE……spotrakk and statista Ther!!!

Soooo…. Zaidi’s plan worked to perfection. Super old expensive team sucked but was a little less expensive. Got it. This is definitely what we need, a genius who will go get us a giant pile of old expensive guys who may all bust out for fairly solid seasons all at the same time…. oh, and also go get us AT&T field to play in so that pitchers who are broken inside can be reborn on our roster…. accept when they aren’t (lookin at you Serephini).

I was thrilled with the Pads win but still can’t understand pulling Kershaw in that situation. I’m sure “analytics” is the answer. But I just don’t get it with an Ace on the mound who seems to be getting better and not tiring. I would appreciate insight into this.
