LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Anaheim blues

Good morning Angels fans. I have your links right here.

Angels News

Nevin admits what he told Winker on Monday. Looks like water under the bridge.

Jo Adell can’t throw because of his thumb. Uh oh.

Still no Mike Trout in lineup. Will he play again this year?

At least Fletcher is healthy. Yay~

Hey, remember Matt Duffy? He is now rehabbing in SLC.

Shohei Ohtani now has 6 pitches. Sinker is elite.

At least we can be happy Eck and Ashley are happy together. Still salty she wasn’t in the Mandalorian.

Around Baseball

That Tatis Jr Bobblehead SD was going to give out is now a Juan Soto shirt. With how quickly this happened, I wonder why we still do not have a Trout oven Mitt. Speaking of, his father is making excuses. PARENT BETTER!

Brandon Marsh hurt himself trying to rob a home run.

Albert Pujols is great again… vs Leftys.

Devil Magic

A new way for umps to become umps is here.

A Korean high school pitcher will be available this offseason. Do it Perry!

Walker is injured again. Told you Mets were the Angels of the NL.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Hey guys check out at this Troy Percival-esque position-switcher who’s brutalizing California League hitters… 18 K/9… https://www.milb.com/player/kenyon-yovan-668719

Wait and he’s an Angel?

Oh hey, I remember Kenyon Yovan from the draft. Someone who follows the ducks a little liked him/was glad we picked him up. Jeez, yah. He looks good. 2 walks? Yes please.

The only problem is that there is no way this can work. The Angels can’t possibly develop a 1B (I think that’s what he was if I recall) into a pitcher. Not while Arte owns the team. Also, this guy is obviously a reliever, which is a bad thing apparently.

You make solid points. The Angels can’t develop prospects and that will clearly be his undoing.

He might also starve to death in Tri-City for lack of an adequate per diem.

The Braves will be a really interesting org to watch over the next few years. They seem to be working very hard at NOT being the Angels. Same with the White Sox to a lesser extent. They just signed rookie Michael Harris II to an extension, so that makes….

Ronald Acuna (8/100M)
Michael Harris II (8/72M)
Ozzie Albies (7/35M)
Matt Olson (8/168M)
Austin Riley (10/212M)

So, in the end, if any of these guys bust or get hurt, they are on the hook for around 20M per year at worst. At best, they have the heart of their order set for the long term for about 100M per year once these contracts get “more expensive”.

Most of these contracts also have pretty reasonable team options for a year or two after the contract term…. so a lot of these guys could be Braves for 10 years and still only cost 15-20M a year at the end of these contracts. How much will a fully functioning Ronald Acuna be worth in 2030 contract dollars? 40M a year?

How much will it hurt the club if 3 or 4 of these guys go full Michael Bourne on the team?

Note that none of the young pitchers that have come up the last three years have received the huge rookie contract treatment. Intentional?

Also of note, the Braves MiLB system isn’t the fertile valley it once was. Their ranking is meh to bad right now. Will these signings stave off the need to replenish positions at the MLB level as young stars would have become contractual anchors that the Braves can’t afford and let leave?

We’ll see. Our GM worked for this Anthropolous guy.

Getting the heart of the order settled definitely takes pressure off the farm to produce. They can take fliers on higher ceiling guys here and there knowing if they don’t find the next Acuna they already have the current one.

That said, injuries happen, it takes 40 guys to win, and trades get made.

So, just because I am never sure about this murky topic, that Kim kid from Korea is an Intl Amateur Free Agent? We’d use our Intl pool on him? Same as a Dominican kid?

I would like to have him please. As well as many many other Moar Pitjers!

And… the purging of the Rangers continue:

The Rangers today announced that Jon Daniels has been relieved of his duties as President of Baseball Operations, effective immediately. Executive Vice President & General Manager Chris Young will assume oversight of all aspects of the Rangers’ baseball operations department.

But how? I mean, he’s a POBO. Why didn’t he just explain to the owners that this is a baseball decision and that the owners need to go away and let him handle it and then extend himself? How does the ownership group even know what Daniels is doing? He has magic POBO cloaking magic that keeps ownership and marketing away from baseball decisions right? And how is Chris Young, a a mere GM, supposed to do the POBO job for the rest of the season when it is so different from the job he’s used to doing? It’s like taking a CNA and telling them they will be doing all the brain and eye surgeries for the rest of the year. Stupid ownership group.

Hopefully the one or two extra responsibilities the new Pobo has doesn’t over burden him, but hey, he get’s a promotion, a pay raise, and a sexier title.

I remember the times when Jon Daniels was the darling of MLB, being in an enviable position of having a lot of good prospects to bring up or trade for at the deadline (Profar, Mazara, W. Calhoun, Gallo, etc.), and an owner who can spend (Seager AND Semien in the same offseason). The hiring of Chris Woodward was also looked upon positively because he came from the vaunted Dodgers system.

How the mighty falls.

Interesting in MLB pipelines updated top 30 Angel prospects some of their ETA’s of Angel prospects to the bigs don’t make any sense. For example They show Logan O’Hoppe at 2022 (anticipating a Sept call up?) but Zach Neto at 2024 even they are currently teammates at Rocket City. So unless Neto goes through a severe adjustment period (which is always possible) I just dont see it. Also they show Chase Silseth at 2024 even though hes already made 7 big league starts. It also shows his Rocket City teammates Bush, Bachman & Erla not arriving until 2024 so again these ETA’s seem jacked.

Yeah, those ETAs are shit.
Quite a dive for Adams/Paris/Vera… Paris has been raking lately, too.

This actually brings up something I hate about prospect evaluations. They are VERY VERY into shiny new things.

I can’t tell you how many reports I’ve read that include a list of the rankings a prospect had in system or on the top 100. So many of these guys get so much helium when they are drafted early or signed to a big Intl contract. Then as they develop and face challenges they drop and drop…. and get replaced by shiny new draft picks.

Then, after the “old” prospect slogs it out in AA for a while, they advance, eventually show up in the MLB, and a pretty good. There are, of course, the obvious prospects who are good at 18, good at 21, and good in the MLB. But it seems like, since it would take actual work and time to track a players development once they actually struggle, a lot of guys who will turn out to be fairly good MLB players fall down each team’s top 30 so that new fluff can be a top 10 for a year.

It’s why a team like the Brewers seems to always end up with players when their farm and prospect rankings aren’t always golden.

Silseth has said 2024 all year. Which is funny.

O’Hoppe does have a lot more professional experience than Neto. The ETA’s on Bachman and Bush likely depend on if they want to try them as starters or get them into the bullpen quickly.

Quero is playing lights out ball as are Werner Blakely and Kyren Paris. If they finish the year like this, they’ll get some love.

Blakely hasn’t played in a game since early July and Ive gotten zip info on his injury. It doesn’t sound like hell be back anytime soon which is is sad because he was killing it.

When I hear Mike Trout’s coming back soon from his latest injury, I now think about Lucy, Charlie Brown, and the football. One thing with Rendon, when he says he’s out, he’s always out for certain the rest of the year. And his injuries never heal.

By this theory, every season when it becomes apparent that the Halos will miss the playoffs, they should immediately bench Trout for the remaining games.

The guy is making almost $40m a season to play baseball. If he’s healthy enough to play, he better be out there.

The Athletic now reporting Trout is aiming for Friday to come back.

Yes the season is lost but I think it is important to get back to playing games and know what type of off season routine he needs. If this back thing is something that will need to be monitored/controlled the sooner they can try out routines the better.

“His injuries never heal”

is he like some opposite-Wolverine type? I’d never heard his injuries can’t heal. Is that something he’s stated, or perhaps his Dr.?

If you hate Rendon enough then all his injuries are the same injury even if it’s all different body parts. Because the wrist is the knee of the hip and all parts are the back of some part….

what if ML is simply projecting the fact that the hurt Rendon has afflicted upon him will never heal?

How ironic that Grandpa has the same OPS against lefties that Mike Trout typically has against ALL pitchers.

Just about two seconds after MLB put up the Perfect Game icon Suarez gave up the first hit.

Talk about a jinx!! Why is anybody talking about that in the sixth inning? The players aren’t!!

I tuned on the TV to see the pitch that led to the first hit leave his hand. First words I heard were “and that’s the first hit of the ballgame.” By the time I flipped to another channel we were losing.

With that kind of OPS against lefties, I would expect Pujols to sign another 1 year deal with the Cards and reach 700 HRs.

Only 8 needed to be the all time Latin leader.

That’s the goal…can he do it in 47 games left?

If not yes to resigning…as I say ego is the driver.
