LA Angels Thursday News Crash: This Is Where

Mike Trout says “I signed the contract and this is where I want to be.” Coleman Crow continues to pitch well. He’s only 21 so it will be a while before he makes it to the show. Ky Bush is one of the first eight picks to be in the Futures Game. David Fletcher took live batting practice and is expected to be back shortly after the All Star Game.

Other Outfielders

Dodgers outfielder Chris Taylor has a left foot fracture. They don’t know when he’ll be back. Yordan Alvarez is playing a pretty good left field. Here is the 8-5 triple play by the Twins starting with Byron Buxton. Keston Hiura sacrifices his face for the putout.

Other Infielders

Infielder Erik Gonzalez cleared waivers. The Marlins outrighted him to triple A, although he has enough service time to elect free agency if he wishes to do so. Infielder Deven Marrero got a minor league deal in the Mets system. The Diamondbacks claimed Sergio Alcantara off waivers from the Padres. White Sox third baseman Jake Burger is on the ten day injured list with a bruised hand.

Pitchers And Catchers

We probably can’t have Joey Bart. Giants catcher Curt Casali has a grade 2 oblique strain. Jose Quintana is drawing a lot of trade interest, luckily apparently not from the Angels. Chris Archer is out with left hip tightness. Kyle Hendricks is out with a shoulder strain. The Orioles claimed Kirk McCarty off waivers from the Guardians and designated Marcus Diplan for assignment. The Blue Jays claimed Matt Peacock off waivers from the Royals and designated Shaun Anderson for assignment to make room. The Reds placed Tyler Mahle on the IL with a shoulder strain. Frankie Montas will miss his next start due to shoulder inflammation. The Yankees designated Ryan Weber for assignment. The Pirates DFAd Austin Brice.

The New York Mets are hiring a Senior Software Engineer and a Technical Product Manager.

MLB Trade Rumors is looking for a part time writer who will be paid hourly.

On one side of the coin, I would like to know who is gone, on the other side I noticed that 2 were missing last night and today, I definitely do not and will not miss them. I know it’s none of my business really and don’t want anyone telling us who is gone, but my Sherlock Holmes school of Detectiveness makes me use my powers of oblividness. 😂

Watching that triple play sure looked more Angels like than it should have. Funny stuff that the cameraman and the director were faked out. Even with all our injuries this season we sure are better off than the W/S or the Dodgers. Lots of dumpster diving going on right now, Eppler and the Mets have Got the Money! His skill set going to waste. Now if only Ohtani would say he would like to stay for even Trouty money, if I was Arte my pen would be flying out of my pocket faster than a speeding bullet. Good for Ky Bush and good luck to boot.

Last night’s game was a lot of fun, Shohei is definitely one of a kind.

Go Angels! It is fun to win a good game for once.

Since June 3, the Angels are 5-0 when Ohtani pitches and 6-20 when anyone else pitches.

WBC is back in March 2023 – with games in PHX against MEX/CAN/COL! (finals are in FLA)

i’m not sure the results matter much to me but getting to see the talent together all in on field is an awesome experience. I think last time, USA was centered around FLA so i didnt catch much in person but with Team USA back in AZ, im a little more excited.

if youre on the fence for a March AZ Spring Training experience in 2023, the should help nudge you to cross the river.

I was pretty surprised to hear Manny Banuelos is still in the league. I know because he gave up a grand slam to Judge. Still in prime Angels form. What would it take to get him? 😀

What’s Trout going to say? “I’m sick of carrying this pathetic franchise?”

I personally would rather have $400 million than win the World Series or make the playoffs. If I could have both – fantastic! But if I had to chose just one, give me the loot. I could find satisfaction and purpose in other ways and it would set my family up for generations.

But what if you already have 500M? You gotta remember, if you just want to sit on your ass and collect money you can just buy a team like the Marlins. Buying the Angels, especially when he did, was probably supposed to lead to proudly hoisting trophies and making vaster sums of money.

I just want to add that yesterday’s game thread was an absolute joy. I’m not saying it had to do with the win but it might have also had to do with the bans. I’m not sure I’m just a simple dude.

I’d have done it the Communist Block way…. don’t even tell people there are bans. Just disappear who ever needs to go away and then never bring it up. Shrug your shoulders if someone asks. Disappear that person if they keep pushing.

What was wrong with all the olde stuff we used to do? I’m talking about good ol’ fashioned tar and feathering, and then sending the feathered/tarred one out on the rails?

I got T’n F’ed once. It was tolerable. What was my infraction? Can’t remember for sure, but I may have called for a bunt.

IMHO. I’ll probably get blasted for this but in my heart of hearts I honestly believe Trouty regrets signing that massive contract with halos. I love Trouty. He’s a consummate professional and would never admit that. Why bite that hand that feeds you?! He’s gotta wake up and feel like it’s groundhogs day everyday. Anyways Go Halos!

I actually had this talk with co-workers a while back and it’s actually fairly easy to see why he’s happy with his decision…. though not happy with not winning flags as of yet.

1) It’s the team you came up with. Sure, that’s not a huge factor, but if you’re comfortable and you have the option of staying many will.
2) He obviously has some suction with the owner. You don’t always have that, even if you’re a star. He also has FO input. Aaron Judge does not.
3) He must like SoCal. Why uproot if you don’t need to? So there’s that.
4) He got a lot of money.

5) This is the big deal. How many teams can actually afford to pay what Trout’s getting? On top of that, how many teams can afford that AND THEN pay other players?

See, we bitch about how much money is tied up in 2-6 players, but how many teams can even pull that off and pay Trout? Maybe 9? How many of those teams want Trout? How many of those towns does Trout want to play in? Bitch all we want, how many teams does Trout KNOW he can go to and the payroll will be at least180M a year?

Looking long long term, if Trout wants to get his bag AND win the Angels were a fantastic option. They may be pinched now, but they have far more ability than most teams to gather talent around him. Take an area of failure, the farm, even there the Angels technically have the ability to revamp in that area faster than say the Blue Jays, if they really choose to throw money at it.

On top of that, this is just a guess, but I think he probably views moves like Justin Upton differently than we do. Think about it. There he is, Albert Pujols is behind him in the order grounding out to third twice a game. The Angels are on the edge of contention. They go out and get a guy who has an OPS over .900, and has a career OPS that generally sits above .800. Trout doesn’t bitch about Upton constantly being hurt, or Cozart destroying his career diving for a ball, the way we do. Those were expensive attempts to build around him that failed and, as a player, he could see how much those failures hurt both his teammate’s body and Arte’s wallet.

I’m sure he’d have preferred Upton and Rendon and Cozart and various other guys didn’t fall apart, but at the same time I think he also probably realizes how few teams will continually have the ability to even try to sign Gerrit Cole while he’s also on the payroll. If any team’s gonna build a winner around him at some point the Angels are more likely than most, are obviously willing to try, and are his “home” to boot.

So no, he probably doesn’t regret it all that much.

Or the plethora of tj surgeries this team has been through during his tenure here.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yah. I mean, I can’t actually know, but in my limited sports experience I was never pissed at coaches, etc for my catcher getting a busted knee or all the offensive linemen getting hurt. It’s just luck mostly. Sure, a really good med staff may help a little, but it’s not like a superior soak, stretch and massage will solve a torn ligament that’s going to happen.

I can only assume Trout’s of a similar mind, and would be even more likely to be aware and unhappy if Moreno Malvado was providing a bucket of dirt to rub on injuries and then a collection of Lyster knives and booze.

This is one of those times the long-term contract actually benefits the Angels. I don’t want Trout to leave, and had they not given him such a massive deal, he might be eyeing elsewhere. I think he’s smart enough to know he made his decision and has to stick with it, so publicly he’s going to make the best of it.

BREAKING NEWS!: Player Would Prefer to Win World Series!

I swear to gah that MSM is desperate for everything to cross the NBA Event Horizon and descend into a blood spattered cluster f*** where contracts don’t mean a damn thing, players just demand to go where their friends are also getting overpaid, and deleting all the photos related to your current team on your social media is huge news…. Sports as a high school relationship.

I’m sure Trout’s frustrated. So are what? 300 other MLB players? But he’s not gonna voice that frustration just to set the Weasel Sports DotNet “reporters” scurrying, and he’s not going to do it regularly because he’s not a total bitch boy.

What he says to Arte, on the other hand, we won’t know. If he’s handling himself right he bitches UP the chain, not sideways or down.

I don’t mind the contract because he is a first ballot HOFer who did all his best work for us, not some other team. It’s the series of long-term contracts to 30-plus players from other teams I’ve never liked.

We can look at his body language, or try to interpret his quotes, but we’ll never know what he really thinks unless he announces he wants to leave like Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving. That will never happen with Trout, he’s too much of a pro.

There’s an article in the LA Times about the Doyers problem at closer. To summarize, Kimbrel sucks. So, my thought is, why not send them Raisel for a prospect haul. While I like Raisel, his salary does not comport with Arturo’s self-imposed salary cap, nor with our current needs, as we are rarely in a position to require his services these days.. Our farm is fallow. I think this could be a win/win. Seems to me, this is as good a place to start as any. Once again, I worry that our GM intern will have difficulty matching wits with the Doyers brain trust. Still, we have to start doing something.

I didn’t some quick research, and I can’t find any evidence that there’s a NTC. I did find out that it is backloaded so it might be nice to get rid of it during a rebuild/retool.

Yeah, I still think he has good stuff and a good mentality.

He went through a bad stretch. And I do blame Maddon somewhat for that, especially the HR to Harper in Philly. He never should have been allowed to pitch to Bryce Harper in that spot. That was on the coaches.

His ERA would look alot more respectable if you took away that one batter/hit.

MarineLayer

The Doyers could definitely use him. I think he thrives on high intensity, and he will be in the middle of a post-season run for them, instead of pitching meaningless games for us.

Well, I would not trade him for prospects. He is under contract so is not in danger of leaving via FA like he was last season. Since we do have Ohtani for at least one more season, I feel like we should try to add pieces and see if we can finally make the playoffs next season.

If we trade Raisel now it just leaves a big hole we will have to fill. He has been pitching better lately and I would guess that continues… Unless one of the prospects you get is ready to step in and be our closer, and do better than Raisel I would not trade him.

If however, we are out of it in July of 2023 for that season that would be a different conversation…

Due to that contract I don’t think Iglesias has a ton of value. Enough to snag a prospect and open up payroll for next year, but not a “haul.”

The “haul” is whatever we can get plus the freed up cap space. It’s possible the Doyers may overpay because of their cost be damned philosophy.

If we’re going full rebuild I’d be down to try this. I looked his contract up, doesn’t seem to have a NTC and I doubt he’d complain about closing for Los Doyers.

But if we go full rebuild that means trade Ward, trade Walsh, trade Sandoval, trade Ohtani, trade Stassi, eventually trade Fletcher if we can, trade Lorenzen and Thor now….

Everything becomes Rendon, Trout and a bunch of guys yall will declare “Not MLB caliber” for at least a couple years. So learn to enjoy Rengifo.
