Angels lose pitching duel in Miami

The Angels are losing a ton lately, again. Being terrible will do that. It is especially true at the plate, meaning that any starting pitcher could have a great time vs this offense. Which means that when an ace faces the Angels, doom is likely.

Noah tried his best to keep up though. 5 innings of 2 run ball is decent enough, right? Only 5 hits allowed too, and hey, he had 8 strikeouts and no walks! Thor was decent again! And hey, 4 innings of shutout baseball by the bullpen! Amazing!

But yes, it didn’t matter as the Angels had 2 hits through 8 innings. Seriously, it was pathetic. The only good thing worth showing was that Trout made a good catch.

Yay defense…

And like, yeah, that was certainly a good catch. Something that is in the highlights since there was nothing else to show for the Angels.

Oh and Stefanic had a pinch hit hit in the 9th, the 3rd hit of the game. In fact, Trout walked too, putting 2 on for Shohei Ohtani. Despite sucking all game the Angels had a chance to take the lead.

HE walked. Bases loaded, one out in the 9th, down two. The Miami bullpen was blowing the excellent 8 inning shutout start by their starter, was this hope?!

Taylor Ward hit a sac fly. NOT SHUT OUT!

NOT SHUT OUT!

And Walsh flew out to end the game. Ugh.

The Angels lose, again, stuck in 4th place in the AL West. All on Ohtani’s birthday. Pain Dayo…

Hey all, we banned a few people recently. We get people are frustrated but we aren’t going to tolerate personal attacks, racism, homobhobia, wishes of violence, etc. Be kind to each other!

No, but seriously: THANKS!, Jessica and all – to quote Gilligan’s Island – “the rest.”

Now: can you pitch? Can you put the ball in play? SOS

You know I would have put up with a lot more grieve from the antagonists if it had led to more offense and a better bullpen. But, alas, it was not meant to be.

Thanks, Jessica, et al. I’d love for the site to continue to grow so bans are of course the other direction. However, I just didn’t get why some folks were getting so frustrated they’d insult one another. Solidarity through suffering!

On the old site when Rev ran it, I remember a guideline that said something like, “If you have a complaint about the team, make it, and then move on.” In addition to obvious guidelines about personal attacks, etc. I like the idea that we should not use every single post to complain, etc. That gets old (and yes, I complain about managerial moves, the front office, etc. because fans do that but at some point…..).

I’d like to thank the Angels for helping out my fantasy team and clinching $3 tix for the remaining home games. Let’s get that 3 million attendance number, heck yeah! 😆

Angels will always have 3 million attendance. Arte sells tickets insanely cheap to his charities. Charities give away the tickets. People that get free tickets still buy food that’s marked up a billion %. Arte gets that money and nice tax write offs to send to politicians to try and get favorable deals.

Not on track for 3 million this year so he’s gonna have to work some magic to hit that number.

Serious question: why is everyone understanding when Trout shows up his pitcher for tipping pitches, yet everyone gets fired up when Bauer launches a FB over center field out of frustration? I know he’s our wunderkind, but that behavior is cancerous to a clubhouse.

That probably could have been handled better. Let’s just hope these guys don’t start brawling among themselves like the old Papelbaum chokehold.

This year Trout has been more expressive with how bad the club has been. I don’t think it was out of malice or anything, more like you’ve got to be kidding me, what are we doing out there? Like when Maddon intentionally walked Seager with the bases loaded vs Texas earlier in the season. Just a you got to be kidding me look on his face. It’s reputation too, Trout is known to be a good guy, Bauer not so much. So that’s why people react differently towards both of those guys. People also might be feeling bad that Trout is stuck on a team not going to the Playoffs anytime soon, so they took that with a grain of salt.

If your business was struggling and your best performer started berating his coworkers in front of everyone at the company, would you be okay with it?

Airing dirty laundry in front of customers and the opponents was not ideal.

You took what Trout did as berating someone? Like someone said earlier it could have been handled differently. He should have mentioned what he saw when he went to the dugout. Trout was frustrated and was showing his dugout what he saw. I think Lorenzen was the one always asking Trout if he noticed him tipping pitches. Being in Centerfield Trout has a bird’s eye view of what the Pitcher is doing. To answer your question I’m okay with that if it doesn’t happen all the time. That’s happened to me before besides the struggling part.

I wrote a decent piece on how trout can improve as a leader about two weeks ago. Maybe that’s what he should work on in the off-season because he’s always working on something. Baseball is a tweener sport between individualized sports like golf, tennis or swimming and true team sports like rugby, football, or hockey. It’s just like my opinion, man. But I agree, leadership is trout’s least developed skill. Tori Hunter was our last good clubhouse leader if you all want a reference.

Trout letting the bench know Peguero is tipping pitches would not possibly bean a spectator. Additionally, there is a difference between frustration and an anger problem.

it appears we’ve got another “let’s see what we’ve got to look forward to” season. Reading Jeff’s “what I’d do if I were Perry – mid-season” reminds me that Perry will never do what we want because a) he doesn’t have the backings/funds and b) the various trades we suggest neglect to take into consideration that the other GM is looking for his best deal and not simply going by “trade value”. So it’s off to the Rocket City box scores for me!

jcstein

We absolutely need a good clubhouse guy to try to get us out of this ridiculous funk. I’ve never seen the team so sluggish and with absolutely no morale. Either trade / cut the players who are causing it, bring in some veterans who will change the clubhouse dynamic, or both.

I was thinking… what if they brought in Bumgarner? Dude is fiery. He has salary, but shouldn’t cost much to trade for. And AZ could eat some salary

If we could get MadBum I’d be stoked. Why don’t we hire Pence as a consultant? I feel like those two together on the team in different capacities could actually make a massive difference.

I like Madison but do you think this year there is hope to make the playoffs which would push to acquire an additional arm like Bumgarner? I just think there are way too many underperformers in the lineup to overcome. The time to make acquistions was 4-5 weeks ago. I also think Perry wants to be known as the GM that built the farm back up and unwilling to part with better prospects to net the Angels proven roster additions. Hence the Villar types and feeding off of the suspect AAA roster. It’s been his style thus far too.

That’s why I’m watching less games. Perry is relying on dumpster diving and inferior minor league guys. Worst OPS in majors for July. And they added Villar….This was evident since May when Ks went up and BA went down. Also evident during the losing streak. I read comments looking for leadership and a voice. I look at MadBum since he’s available. It’s last ditch sure, but limited options

Really disappointed that the halos only struck out 11 times. Thankfully Stassis (3 K’s!) march to the Mendoza line is right on schedule and Trout continues his run to 200 K’s. He’s only on pace for 180 or so right now but I have confidence he’ll get there.

I’m at the point now where I want the stench coming off this team to meet diaper mountain proportions. Their coaches are incompetent, stupid and liars (we are tipping on purpose 😂), the players are either going thru the motions or just plain bad, upper management is in over their heads and ownership is firmly in the realm of jack assery.

Major changes are needed and the only way this group of morons will do more than the band aid approach is for this team to completely fall off a cliff. I’m talking a 95-100 loss debacle. Only then will these fantasy baseball like fools realize they were lucky to just be a few games under .500 for the past few seasons. Check that, they might realize it. Might

Didn’t know there was an early game. Don’t care that I missed it. I used to care. Even when we were bad I used to look forward to games and hate off days. Not anymore.

No base runners. Today the Mariners played 6 guys with a OBP above .329. Angels had 3. If you can get guys on, hit for power, and or move runners, you put pressure on opposing SP and then get to work on relievers. This team doesn’t scare anyone. Plus if you can’t score it puts so much pressure on the SP and BP to make 0 mistakes. Which then could lead to over-managing due to playing scared

Stassi can’t hit like the other 6 usually in the line up andTrout needs to strike out less. 3 hits and 2 errors while scoring 1 lousy run will usually get you a loss. Just another wasted pitching performance due to lack of any offense basically. Good job Angels. 🔥

I agree, Jeff, but The Plumber wasn’t in your analysis in the previous post of what changes the Angels could make to be more competitive.

You had Rengifo and Fletch covering 2nd in your hypothetical.

I’d like to see what Stefanic could do for the rest of the season.

I hope he gets a real shot at making a difference.

Rengifo has far more upside than Stefanic. He’s still in the age range where he could take a good step forward and is a toolshed compared to Stefanic. Rengifo has hit some absolute bombs for a MI and I’d be giving him the playing time with everyone they have. Velasquez and Wade are the ones we know what we have.
