June 16, 2022, the Angels face the Mariners for the first time this season. Both teams, who had high spirits to start the season, find themselves battling for 3rd place in the AL West.
Shohei Ohtani hoped to stop the skid, just like he did not too long ago, stopping the longest losing streak in franchise history. He, the last bastion of NL Baseball, pitching and hitting in the same game, looked to once again, single handedly save the day.
Thankfully, he had help today.
On the mound, Ohtani did his job. He went 6 innings, giving up 0 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2.
Meanwhile, at the plate, Shohei went 2 for 4, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Trout pinched in as well, hitting a home run for the first runs of the game.
Highlighted Recap
Scoring started in the 3rd, as after Ward got the Angels’ first hit, Mike Trout drove him in by hitting an opposite field 2 run home run.
It was a pitcher’s duel, which meant that was the only scoring for a while. There was a nice defensive play, however, with Brandon Marsh making a diving catch to end the 5th.
Runs will score in the 7th, as Taylor Ward hit a single and Mike Trout hit a 2 run home run, this time to LF.
Aaron Loup did his job in the 7th, but Ryan Tepera gave up a run in the 8th on back to back hits.
Perhaps it was the ball, as he rejected ball after ball from the ump.
It seemed to work too, as he got out of the inning without anymore damage. 4-1 Angels after 8.
D-Cell came in for the 9th, looking to save the game. He sent the Mariners down in order, securing the win!
What I really enjoyed watching was the team beating the shift by going the other way.
Was looking at the Guardians last 10-15 games Holy moly! They played the opposite of what we did. Nothing but trash can teams. If we can get a block of junk teams like that in a row we might be in the mix again…….who am I kidding we’re doomed!
How about the Atlanta Braves who have WON 14 STRAIGHT which could go even higher. That is the exact opposite of the Angels who lost 14 straight. The Braves opponents weren’t the toughest but the Angels couldn’t win 14 straight if their lives depended on it. Sure the Angels have finally ended their losing streak but are basically going in the opposite direction as Atlanta (who BTW are current WS champs)……….
Nice to see our ‘fans’ have confidence in our team. I wonder if Atlantans go on their fansites convinced that the Braves can’t win? Hmm.
NIce to see the bullpen only give up one run today.
And, Iggy striking out the side.
This is just as important as Sho’s 6 innings of studly work.
Still a bit concerned that after Sho, the last 6 batters are still so underwhelming. It may be fine against the Mariners; but we need more to compete.
Remembering the 2002 Angels lineup, we had Glaus, Eckstein, Kennedy, and Erstad around the horn. In 2022, we’ve got Rendon, Squid, Wade (Rengifo), Walsh. We need more.
I say: call up the Plumber. We need some blue-collar, get dirty, bust your ass grit on the field.
Nice to see Ikeman get in a couple of hits, though. Especially, the bunt, that was nice to see.
I say we make the playoffs this year…….
I’ve got no problem with Walsh, Marsh, and Stassi beyond Ward, Trout, and Ohtani, but the rest are bad bench options at best. Adell must figure in somewhere. I will take the atrocious fielding.
One month ago, May 16th, we were in 1st place. Doesn’t that seem like 6 YEARS ago?
One thing is for sure. Mike likes to hit in Seattle!
Now I feel a little bit better!
Trout 4, Mariners 1
Still need to start hitting the ball up and down the lineup. Pitching has been good. I’m guessing, Perry is looking for middle infield help. He should be.
I predict we win a few more in the near future.
Wait, are you saying we will win some games?
D-Cell #13
Good to see Ward get some hits, Trout driving the ball in one of his favorite ballparks to hit, Shohei continuing his hitting streak as well as Losing streak stopper on the mound, Bullpen not giving the game away and some Good Defense notably by Marsh in the outfield. That’s what they have to do for a recipe for success until the others in the Lineup can chip in as well.
That play Marsh made running toward the wall to make a catch: Adell never makes that catch.
Mutt: I watched the Angels game tonight.
Jeff: Yea? How did it go?
Mutt: It was a weird game.
Jeff: What do you mean?
Mutt: The Angels won.
Now the streaks are both history, and Trouty hit 2 HRs with runners on, that maybe a record for him. 😃
I just realized we’re only 5 games under .500. I spend a lot of time on CtPG so I was under the impression we’re 15 under or something.
Look at that. When our big hitters actually hit we actually win. Crazy cakes.
Don’t be so negative, Gitch….
We’re going to the playoffs….
Totally playoffs. We just have to catch some teams that are equally capable of suck as we are.
I’m hoping to see the shufflebot this series
Angels Win!
