Angels Suffer From an Old Fashioned Bullpen Meltdown in Arlington

It would be impossible to go thru a 162-game season and not have your bullpen melt down on a few occasions. Tonight was one of those occasions. There is nothing left to say. The Angels went ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh on a Mike Trout homer. In the bottom of the eighth though, the bullpen allowed seven runs. They lost 10-5, allowing 6 BB. Oh wait I said there was nothing more to say.

All you doom n gloomers need to just stop. Every team goes through spells like this. It’s a 162 game season.

Some of this is tongue and cheek.
This is MLB, not the war in Ukraine.

That error on Rengifo was bullshit. I think I jinxed him.

Well, that’s it. We finally lost a series. Which means the season’s a total loss. Time to give up and just start crying about everything we can think of to cry about.

Oh, wait. That’s what half of us do when we are winning too.

Well, at least I can change my underwear now.

Another couple games like this (even if we manage to win them) and we’ll officially be in a pitching slump. If we handle it, and the aftermath, then we’ll be one challenge closer to a legit team. I’m not actually all that worried. Everyone’s about 40 IP into the season, or 20 innings for relievers. This is when the dead arms happen, especially with a short spring, so I figured we’d have some bad round of starts and appearances. Let’s just hope it passes by without any real injuries and doesn’t last weeks.

IF the Angels get swept then it’s time to start wondering because that shouldn’t happen. Also pitching greats Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Jim Palmer, Catfish Hunter and Greg Maddux never had dead arms. They never had Tommy John surgery either. They weren’t micromanaged like today’s primadonnas who sit out if they get a hangnail..

Yes, because good teams don’t get swept by bad teams ever. It happens. I’m sure the Dodgers will get swept by the Marlins or something this year.

This claim that pitching greats never had dead arms is a weird one. How do we know that they never had dead arms? Maybe they just pitched through it, which is why they had some awful games.

Pitch counts IMO is overrated BS. Nolan Ryan routinely pitched well over 100 pitches in a game MANY times in his career even later as he got older. So I tend to agree with Ryan a lot more who actually pitched and knows a little something about it..

WTF?!?
I went to the other room for a bit up 4-3.
Devastating.
To Rangers no less.

Our starters have been running on rough roads of late, is it because to much rest? Have the Baseballs been changed? Manfred’s ideal game is to have a football score, as my idea of a great game is a 2-1 game where 2big hits can change the game to 2-3 and then end 4-3. Tonight Asstros had a 5 -HR inning, that sounds like a set up play by Manfred.

Well when you walk the bases loaded I don’t think it’s the ball’s fault. 😂 😥

Bummed over losing a series to a not-all-that-good team.
Yet: misery loves company: I thought Tepera and Valdez had terrible days, but Eovaldi gave up 5 homers in one inning, only the 3rd guy in history to serve up that many dingers in one frame.

Ohtani will help us salvage a game.

I didn’t think baseball was tiring enough to need as many days off as they’re giving players that they’re paying tens of millions to.

2nd bad loss. Why is Marsh so low in the order?

Really? Your takeaway is “Marsh is too low in the order” after watching all that?

Valdez threw like 9 pitches in a row at exactly 78 miles per hour. It looked batting practice or something.

Confusing how he was supposed to be very effective throwing that slow.

It’s not like his pitches were even moving much.

His numbers are garbage. No idea why he’s on the ml roster. Why was he put in during a game that’s still close on his debut? Maddon trying to be cute.

I doubt Maddon could ever be cute no matter how hard he tries.

Maybe it was one of those Maddon “character-building” attempts. Not sure why you’re trying to character build a 37-year-old soft tosser though, with all due respect.

Close?

Our pen’s put on a ton of miles the last week. I think Valdez is an arm that’s alive and is also able to be used and then exposed off the 40 man roster when we need his spot back.

No idea why valdez was even called up. There’s younger, better pitchers in the minors right now. Maddon brought him in when they were down 1 and he imploded right after.

BTW, I believe that Shohei should not bat on his pitching days. I also think that is when you put a tired player in to DH so he can rest and play a bench player. I hope Shohei pitches the lights out tomorrow.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I wouldn’t do it every time he pitches, but it’s not a bad idea to let some other guys DH some, especially when the summer gets hot.

if $$$ weren’t involved, Tepera lost his role to ortega. Dude has no business in high leverage situations right now.

Duffy rough night.

He has been coming through in the pressure games he is brought into until tonight, the pen is going to have a night like this once or twice a month. Duffy had it tough tonight for sure, but he got banged up by trying to save a bad throw and got mowed down for his effort. Tepera really has been good except for two bad outings. Loup has had 2 bad outings, Ortega has had one, Halloween has had 3, Bearclaw has been in one bad outing.
Our Pen is very good, especially compared to previous seasons.

Yeah, this imploding will happen more often when you have two days in a row of very limited starting pitching. That’s the real issue here, imho.

So what do you think? The Plumber or Renny? Renny is getting on base, just can field. The Plumber can hit but can’t supposedly field. If he can throw straight I would like to make the trade with the Bees. What say you?

He went 2 for 5, and is batting .316 – and you want to send him down?

I am starting to think you have something personal against him.

Instead Langston needs to say something really buffoonish like: “I still have this Angel team making the postseason and even winning the World Series”………..

You obviously don’t listen to much Angels radio because Langston is far from a “fan boy” as he criticizes the teams and managerial moves often (most recently the Maddon walk with the bases loaded).

For the second straight loss we have not started a important player and we lose. We need everyone rowing this ship to win, but the starting OF, Inf, need to play to stay in this race, Joe needs to learn that the starters need to be in every game for 2 or 3 or 4 weeks in a row. Other wise we will be out of this real soon.

That’s how we used to roll in the ’80’s. Bobby Grich never wanted a day off.

GrandpaBaseball

That is what makes leaders so good, they want to be on the field. They want to play. This team wants front row seats to watch the game. Duffy did not maybe play as well as he wanted to, be Walsh should have been in the game. Rendon has been playing and battling and he is working his way back to us,(lol, a take on a 4 seasons song Working my way back to you babe.) I just do not have empathy for guys who want to sit when we should be winning. In truth we do not have great back ups so the big Names need to step up and play.

El_Duderino

I agree that putting Duffy in for Walsh was unnecessary– assuming that Maddon was trying to get cute and match up RH vs LHP even while Walsh is hitting lefties now.

We saw it really hurt us on defense.

Agreed. I see Houston, NYY, Dodgers trot out the same lineup with all the important pieces in there day in and day out. When everyone knows their role and where they’ll be penciled in daily is when things start to roll. BUT Joe is smarter than everyone so he’ll do his own thing. I get preserving our injury prone team but do it once we have a cushion not to start the damn year!..smdh. Oh and trade Jo for more pitching like now!

This is my feeling. If we’re killing it take the starters out in the seventh or something. But this 3 on 1 off schedule is pretty weak.

we must start “Important Players” 5 months in a row is a pretty wild take on a consensus top 5 team. Drop 2 to Texas and it gets a little weird from Mr. Optimistic.
