Angels outlast A’s in 4-1 win

The Angels end their series in Oakland in the sun, again. It was the A Team this time, which was a relief as the A’s sent out their best as well. With their ace of the mound, Oakland had a real shot at tying this series at 2 a piece.

For the Angels’ side of the pitching duel, Patrick Sandoval was on the bump. He went 6 and a third innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 4 and walking 4. Sandy didn’t have his best stuff, yet got a quality start.

Sandy man can

With the A Team out there on offense, things looked to be in good hands. Looked, that is. It wasn’t exactly an offensive explosion at the plate today. In fact, the A Team lineup struck out a ton and looked rather inept for the most part. Ohtani had himself a day, however, hitting a home run and being intentionally walked.

Highlighted Recap

Shohei Ohtani hit home run 101 in the first after a Trout single. 2-0 quick.

BIG FLY OHTANI-SAN!

Patrick Sandoval was not sharp on the day, getting into trouble inning after inning. He gave up a run in the 3rd, losing half his lead. 2-1 Angels after 3.

There wasn’t much action after that, until the top of the 7th when a couple of foul balls off the home plate umpire forced him to leave due to concussion protocol.

Ow

Angels finally scored again in the 8th, with a Rendon single up the middle, scoring Ward.

3-1 Angels

Velazquez added a 4th run in the 9th, doubling in Marsh.

4-1 Angels!

Jimmy Herget pitched after Sandoval and had a 2 and 2/3 inning save. Impressive for a man with glasses.

Angels win 4-1!

Well, we do also play Texas and Oakland almost exclusively for the next two weeks.

The challenge for us should be June. If you have not looked at our June schedule you probably should. If we are not at the top of our game that month could really sink us.

We have no choice, another nickname ’Ikemen’…Ikemen better start hitting a little more often or maybe we should ship him off to Japan.

The Angels have had 5 road series so far on the season. They have not lost one yet, taking series from Texas, Houston, Boston and now Oakland. They split in Chicago.

That is pretty impressive to start the year and good for an overall road record of 12-6.

If they can continue to do anything close to that we should be in good shape.

Spludder spludder walrusnoise! Worst best team evah! There is no way a team with Velasquez in the line up every day can win 24 games. It’s unpossible. We gave up as many walks as strike outs because our pigeons are turribel! 14 LOB! This FO is an atrocity! We could have had Christin Stewart, Nolan Watson OR Kyle Holder instead of Taylor Ward. Hell, we totally missed out on Josh Sborz! Farhan Zaidi would have been all over those Sporz! Just another Oligarch Sunday! Poopy Soufflé. Oil of Oley Emoji emoji Bob Nutting will not play!

6 1/3 innings from a starting Angels pitcher!!! Well done Sandoval.

Man: the Reds are epically bad and snake-bit: SP Hunter Greene (sky-high ERA) goes into the 8th against the Pirates with a no-hitter. He walks the first 2 guys, gets pulled with 118 pitches. Art Warren walks the first guy: bases loaded in a 0-0 game. A grounder gets a run in, then Warren retires everyone else. Reds lose 1-0 despite no-hitting the Pirates. They’re 9-26 now…and they had been playing “good” recently!

As I recall, the Halos no-hit the Doyers and lost.

You’re right, by gawd. That was the last time a no-hitter was thrown by a losing team. It’s happened 4 other times in MLB history.

I was at that game too! My very hip aunt worked in the movies. There was a “party box” bought by the producer of a film that would come out, called “Boyz In The Hood.” They partied; I watched the game. Feels like 3 lifetimes ago. I think I only went back the Doyer Stadium for games maybe 10 times after that. Then Rupert Murdoch bought the team.

Back then, the Doyer fans were classy. They gave Gardner a standing O after 9.

Still waiting for a Nick Krall headshot from TootyToo since the season started.

To be fair, I actually think Krall does a pretty good job under ACTUAL tough circumstances. But Tooty used to push him as a top “not Angel”… seems to not be happening now.

True? Yes. Superstition? Totally. Gonna stop doing it? Nope. I kind of have to stick with it now or it could be my fault we don’t win the World series and Super Bowl this year. Besides, the hard part is wearing the same underwear since that Chicago series.

Our defense comes through again, does not show up in the box score, but we HAVE THE DEFENSE. Herget was on today and he got his first save and he was cool as a cucumber pitching today. Marsh had a 2-strike hit, has had issues with that this season. A pattern has happened with him as the A’s grooved the first pitch for a strike then have him chase a off speed pitch. On Shohei’s HR he kept his head in the whole swing, that’s a change.

Rendon, as we all can agree is coming back from batting under .200. He is driving in runs now. Squid is bring his average up too while surprising us with not just defense. Walsh is steady.

Ward is from a whole different galaxy. He may even be A-I.

One downside is popping up, we are striking out too much. This team is looking for the HR maybe as opposed to making contact.

We just need to take one series after another and we will start moving up the standings, not just in the West, but in the American League. GO HALOS!

I say don’t change our approach. Both at the plate and at Applebees. Things are working the way they should. I’d address the issue when there’s a longer offensive drought or a pregnant 37 year old hair stylist threatening us.

The whole thing is creepy. His swing looks really good. Taylor Ward. Swing. Good. On top of that he looks like he’s been pushing a 250 OPS+ his whole life and he’s bored with it.

Body snatchers totally got him.

We should probably just call him The Borg or Body Snatcher or something.

Yeah, good call. It’s the whole Tim Duncan (also a known Cyborg) personality of, “Did I just win the championship, win the lotto, or did my grandma just die?”

Only a borg/body snatcher explains this.

Granted, A’s lineup isn’t much, but good to great pitching throughout (exc the 9th inning of game 1 yesterday). Great sight.

The early game yesterday was a buttercup all-timer: 2 quick outs, Laureano fights off a few, then doubles. I’m thinking: the only real weakness I’ve seen over the last 2 years is when Iggy has one out to go. But we’ll be cool Still 3-1, w/2 outs.

Then, unforgivably, he walks the next guy. Jeez. Was it 2 strikes on Barrera before he hits the walk-off? Damn! Soooo close to a 4-game sweep.

Hope MNT and Walshie start raking again in TEX. Because: man! our pitching has been amazing. For today’s game I was watching the A’s feed. Dallas Braden noticed early on Sandy didn’t have his vaunted change, and he adjusted. Like an 8-year vet.

A 2 inning and a third save is just what we needed. Ortega and Herget are being solid with their multiple inning tasks.
