Angels sign Noah Syndergaard

Per multiple reports the Angels have signed Noah “Thor” Syndergaard to a one year deal for $21 million. Thor does have a Qualifying Offer which means the Angels will forfeit their second draft pick.

At his best, Noah is a legit ace. His downfall has been health. He’s only pitched two bullpen innings over the last two years. But if healthy he likely has the best stuff on the market.

It’s now been 3 full days since this happened. WTF, Perry? Are you on vacation or something? Where’s the Robbie Ray signing? Or Stroman?

riiiiiskeee whiskers, would have much preferred a team option tacked on, in recognition of the loss of draft pick. because if he comes out and is stellar, buh bye, so we get to spend the pick and the dough to showcase him, not vary savvy . p.s. 21 mil, this league is nuts.

Very good point about the team option. Seems like a small thing, but it is one of those things as you say that could turn out to be very handy.

I am glad we got Noah.

It is definitely a gamble…

I reserve the right to bitch about him if he can’t return to form, but i’m also very excited to get a guy of his caliber, assuming he can still perform at a high level.

I’m hoping his last full season of 4+ ERA ball is a symptom of his weakening elbow. That’s best case scenario.

Don’t like it. Another 1yr handout for a high risk, injury prone pitcher. Typical Angels. It’s like Billy Eppler never left.

Well, with a lot higher upside, but for much more money.

One less name in the tender/non-tender conversation. Do we keep Gosselin?

He’s probably next on the chopping block when Perry signs another arm.

Fair enough. I don’t see a place for him on the roster moving forward (and sincerely hope the injury bug doesn’t place him back on the list).

I guess if he was more versatile defensively we could do it.

He is actually a pretty good hitter and always delivers professional AB’s. This includes being pretty good in clutch situations.

Next chopping block victim has to be either Goose or Kean Wong.

With the Rule 5 draft rosters due to lock in on Friday, I wonder if one of those 2 may not make it to the weekend even if we don’t sign another big name pitcher by then.

Wong can be stashed in AAA though, right? Gosselin is a non-tender candidate.

I think Perry was the scout who drafted Thor with the Blue Jays back in 2010 so they’ve probably always had a connection . I assume Perry was also instrumental in the Jays drafting Marcus Stroman in 2012 so maybe he’s next to don the Angel Red?

I kinda feel the same way as when we acquired Bundy, if it’s the “premiere move” of the off-season it’s a problem, but if we go out and add more i’m fine with it.

Color me relieved. I read Mia’s above post and worried the Jewish Defense League was somehow involved in internecine Angels “best hair” wars.

Of course it was Jessica DeLine. I over-thought it. Thanks!

Now let’s go out and get 2 other guys who can pitch…ya know, in case Thor’s arm falls off. Hey: it is the Angels signing FAs. Admit it.

Don’t mess with the JDL. Remember, we have Jewish Space Lasers.

Trouble is, how do you trust an animal that is so hard to categorize, much less understand? Do you even know what noise a platypus makes? No? Google it, it’s awesome. But hard to trust.

If we can trust them to stop evil geniuses, why can’t we trust them with a baseball team?

I just don’t know. I have yet to hear ANY platypus explain his position on the spin rate revolution, or pitch counts. Actually, I’m not even sure what they eat. Fish? Bugs? Swamp grass?

I’m excited for this move.

Usually against losing a pick, especially for a 1 year investment. However, I think the potential upside is worth the draft cost, and it fits our (hopeful) window of competitiveness with the Trout, Ohtani, and Rendon core. I’m assuming we still add at least 1 more starter of good quality, possibly another attached to a QO which would lessen the hurt of the Thor-lost pick.

Stroman + Gray would be a dream.

MLBTR is saying we are only after short term pitcher contracts. Man I hope that’s not the case. There just aren’t many good FA arms coming onto the market anytime soon, and it’s not like we have Greene, Lodolo and Sixto Sanchez kicking it with Asa Lacy and Detmers on the farm.

Please unstupid this.

Oh. It’s Hey Man. OK. I mean, I don’t want a four year contract just to finally sign a four year contract, but I would also like to not have to beg for three 37 year old FAs to come here every year.

What is short term ? less than 3 years? That should also include Scherzer ( A Boras client) in that group

I don’t care if the pitchers I want are on other teams that don’t want to trade them. Arte needs to find a way to get me them or he hates winning and stuff.

But, if we add Kershaw on a one year deal that’s not too expensive (and still manage to bolster the bullpen somewhat) in addition, I’ll be happy.
