LA Angels Monday News Crash: Astros Survive to Send Series Back to Houston

Over the weekend, Major League Baseball got three World Series games in Atlanta, of which the Braves won two and the Astros won one. Atlanta leads 3-2 and will travel to Houston attempting to avoid becoming yet another footnote in Atlanta blown sports history.

Perhaps the stage has already been set, after the Astros stormed back from a 4-0 deficit in the first inning Sunday to win Game 5.

Zack Greinke notched a hit, which potentially makes him the last pitcher to get a hit in the non-universal DH era.

Jerry Remy passed away over the weekend…the former Angel had been working in the Red Sox broadcast booth.

Someone apparently attempted to extort MLB? I doubt the plan was thought through that much…

Old friend Albert Pujols is still playing baseball, after his contract with the Angels has finally expired. He notched a walk-off infield single, which basically speaks for itself.

Kyle Seager was notified via email that his 2022 option with the Mariners would not be picked up. Although this must have been expected, there are definitely much better ways for the franchise to go through this process than email.

Coke bought controlling interest in Body Armor for $5.6 billion. MNT should have received a nice return on that deal….

According to the listing in Wikipedia, investors included Kobe Bryant, Gronkowski, Baker Mayfield, Buster Posey, Skylar Diggins, MNT, Klay Thompson and a few more i don’t recognize. Kobe was the third largest shareholder after the two founders. His widow is on the board of directors.

We should be “maybe interested” in every free agent at this point.

If Verlander will take a low base/high incentive contract I’d be all for it.

Story had a down year but still put of 4.2 WAR per BBref. There’s a price point at which he becomes attractive.

FungoAle

Phillies might be looking to dump Segura. I’d be interested in him if they ate half the contract value of $14M base salary. Not a Story but his bat has some pop.

Still think the Angels roll internally to fill the SS slot. Better to add more beef to the OF.

Maybe, I’ve been toying around with a trade for DeJong from the Cardinals. He’s a non-tender candidate there with a slightly above average glove and a little pop.

He’s owed $15 million over the next two years plus will get $2 million for a buyout of his 2024 option. If the Cards would cover $5 million for a guy they might simply cut and owe $17 million, the Angels could get SS covered pretty cheaply.

He was bad last year but career wRC+ of 102 and only 27 years old.

Couldn’t we sign either Villar or Galvis for less?

They both have a track record a bit better than DeJong’s trend line. Seems expensive to trade for a guy like DeJong in hopes that he returns to his first two year stats (3-4 years ago).

I would hate to give up any prospects to get someone, if we could have picked up their equivalent for just cash (especially less cash).

Jeff Joiner

DeJong rates a little above those two defensively. Not a ton on bbref, but does peg him higher.

I would not be opposed to Villar or Galvis (no other money spent on bats) if it meant getting Scherzer for 1-2 years, or even Stroman.

That’s my entire goal in my off season piece. Stroman and one of the mid tier guys. That means basically no money for SS.

With Stroman being a huge ground ball guy, I want the best glove I can reasonable acquire. And with Stassi being such a plus at C, having a weak hitting SS is less detrimental.

Ideally I’ll add Stroman and either keep Cobb or add Kim as a multi inning reliever.

FungoAle

Stroman is getting all the love after Max and will command a $85M+ on a 4-year deal, most likely more. I would not bite on that. You could have a DiScalfani for ~$20M for 2-years and throw in Gray for maybe $16M AAV? Eduardo Rodriguez is also an option.

I’m sure I’ll work up lots of scenarios between now and then.

I’ve liked Stroman for a while and his age and durability are appealing. But getting Rodriguez and/or Gray out of hitter’s ballparks has a lot of appeal too.

We need a SS, 2 rotation pieces, and an entire bullpen. Right now I’m leaning towards going cheap on SS.

I think Max gets Bauer’s deal this off season. Something very similar, any way.

Cheap SS works for me as well. Even if it meant, in-house. So long as the glove fits the position. A no-hit, no-glove SS will not work. Are we ok rolling with Rengifo?

If we can’t get Villar I don’t think DeJong’s a bad idea. Good D is the priority, don’t want to overpay for bat, but if his bat comes back that’s a big bonus.

We’ll have to scrimp somewhere and I think the lineup is deep enough to have a below average bat at SS. We actually have a pretty good bat at C, after all.

Trade: DeJong, Ahmed
Free Agent: Villar, Galvis, or reunite with Iglesias.

Of that pile, the youngest is DeJong and if the bat does return, the options on his contract wouldn’t be that bad. But if one of Paris/Verol/Jackson does blossom over the next two years he can be gone.

JackFrost

Yikes indeed.

These are probably the two players I want the least.

Verlander I absolutely do not want on the Angels. Likewise with Story.

Story would be an overpaid and underachieving burden on us.

BTW, how does Jon Becker know we are interested in these two?

Could it be he’s just making shit up ???

You need to host on the internet. Just type the url of the image (not the image page), and the pic will show up.

e.g.: https: // www. example. com/image.jpg

(ignore the spaces, I just put them there to prevent the site from interpreting it as a real link)

Ward was hurt. We didn’t pick up ANYONE at the deadline because we weren’t making the playoffs (see Trout and Rendon with season ending injuries, and Bundy and Quintana forgetting how to pitch).

Why would you spend 8M for an OF for a team not going to the playoffs?

Yes. That is a player that CLEVELAND signed for 8M. He went on to hit for a sub-.700 OPS. Then he was traded to the Braves. Sent to AAA. Then brought up and played very well for less than 40 games. Now he’s doing well in the post season. He had a 98 OPS+ for the season, Ward had a 108. He had 1.1 WAR for the season in 114 games. Ward had 0.6 in 65 games.

As long as we are desperately grasping for stuff to attach angry emojis to, I had a brownie at a birthday party yesterday. It was a little dry.

Neither the brownie I ate, nor Rossario (a player I actually like) would have made much of a difference for the 2021 Angels hospital ship….. accept Ward didn’t cost 8M. Nor did the brownie.
