Rich Waltz talks with CtPG

Rich Waltz jumped into the Angels broadcast booth mid season, bringing a level of professionalism and a candor that fans enjoyed. Today he was kind enough to sit down and talk about his lifelong love of baseball, his broadcast history, and what it was like chronicling Shohei Ohtani’s amazing year.

I’m really hoping the Angels do the right thing here and bring him back next year. Please enjoy the interview and leave your comments below. Rich will be able to read them.

My only criticism is Rich saying a pitch is “out” instead of “outside.” I keep thinking the batter has been called out when it is just a ball.

I’m all for Rich calling 162 games, no part-time B.S. with Matt V.

Was hoping Rich would just get the full time gig.

If Vasgersian isn’t doing lke 90% of the games next year I don’t understand what the objective is here. This organization feels so amateur sometimes.

I personally liked the Patrick O’Neal PxP. Nothing against RW at all – seems like a very nice guy. But I liked O’Neal and thought he did a really good job and brought some local energy and excitement to the broadcast.

I think its cool though that RW was willing to do this interview and getting to know him better was definitely a bonus.

I think with some more games under his belt, he could be excellent. I hope they are considering him for 2022. He’s been a professional broadcaster for a long time.

Agree, a fine job first time out but not as smooth as Rich. Years of experience was not there. I like O’Neal on Bally’s focused on the Angels and Kings.

He seems like a nice guy but I couldn’t disagree more. It was like all the things Darren Sutton did too much of, but more of it, and minus the experience.

I disagree regarding the Sutton comparison. There was no ‘folks’ or constant references to inane statistics. Sutton was unlistenable while O’Neal provided solid, enjoyable broadcasts. And he has good chemistry with Gubi (which could never be said about Sutton).

The lack of experience is not O’Neal’s fault and becomes a non-issue with more experience at the pxp mic. It took Rojas time to develop as an announcer, the same can be said for O’Neal.

lmfao O’Neal was basically some AM radio dude living out his dream. Good for him and all but… pass.

I respect your opinion but I’m not sure that’s a fair representation. To me he has real potential – and good chemistry with Gubi. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

And he’s pretty goony with his dog about like I am with my houndette.

Well done…..just became a bigger fan of Mr. Waltz. Pitch forks and torches outside the gates if he’s not back next year!
