Canning bombs, Ohtani drops bombs, Angels win 8-7

Griffin Canning looked good for two outs per inning. With two gone in the first he served up a solo shot to MLB comeback story of a lifetime Trey Mancini. Two quick outs and a solo shot followed in the second. Two outs followed by a 4 run rally ended Canning’s night in the third.

Canning left the team in a 6-2 hole and the bullpen with a huge task. Those two Angels runs came courtesy of Jose Iglesias.

The story of the game, however, is once again Shohei Ohtani. He got the Angels to 6-3 with this rocket in the third inning.

But wait, there was more. He then put the Angels in the lead 7-6 the next inning with this monster to become the first to hit 30 HR this season.

The lead lasted until the 7th when Steve Cishek gave up a run with, you guessed it, two outs. It looked like a football score, LA 7 BAL 7 as we headed to the 7th inning stretch. That run was charged to Quintana who pitched one inning after Slegers pitched two scoreless frames.

Enter Michael Mayers and his 7.17 ERA at home this year. Leadoff walk, single to left, and you could see the wheels starting to fall off…again. The Orioles gave the Angels a free out with a popped up bunt and Joe promptly pulled Halloween off the hill and went to Raisel Iglesias.

Iglesias got a fly ball to right. And with two outs, he got another out. This one via a fly ball to newly inserted right fielder Luis Rengifo.

Still tied 7-7, Iglesias managed to get three outs in a row, although the third was a warning track shot to dead center field off the bat of Santander that made everyone nervous for a bit.

Tie game. Bottom 9. Ohtani due up second. After an infield pop up by David Fletcher, who extended his hit streak to 16 games in the third inning, Shohei was announced and the Orioles went to left Paul Fry.

Ohtani walked. Stole second once but was called back due to Rendon accidentally hitting the catcher on his follow through. So after Rendon struck out looking, Ohtani stole second with Walsh at the plate.

Ohtani scored on a single by Walsh! Light that baby up! What a game!

For some reason I went to Halos Heaven. Half the comments were from some troll who thinks Ohtani sucks, haha

Little off topic but Fangraphs has an excellent article on Patrick Sandoval. Liking what I have seen thus far this year.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/patrick-sandovals-changeup-is-a-whiff-machine/

Between Patrick, Shohei, and maybe the Sicario Suarez, we might be able to make some noise.

I think there’s a chance everyone will really like Sutton if we start winning. Just a vague feeling.

I also think that there is a chance people will really like Sutton if some posters didn’t pick apart everything he says and complain about him ad nauseum. We used to have a rule, along with one f- bomb per month, to bitch once and then give it a rest.

Bitch once then give it a rest? Unpomsible!

Though in defense of bitching, it’s easier to follow that once rule back when the team was good, and there was still a lot of repeat bitching back in the day. Still, I miss when there were more ideas for fixing problems being kicked around, rays of hope, etc. A website gets boring when you can pretty much predict what the bulk of the discussion will be…

1) Arte is a bad bad man.
2) The GM is stupider than me.
3) Why was magic not used to get pitching?
4) The manager is stupider than me.
5) To prove these points I will now discuss the hard on I have for (insert player name) for the 12th time.

Season with “We are wasting Trout/Ohtani.”

Repeat.

It can get worse. Try to imagine Buc’s Dugout. Even the discussion of a good player, a ray of hope, always turns to who they can trade him to and will Cherington be the guy who can actually land good prospects for said player. Hope is so dead there they barely bother complaining about Nutting, the worst owner in the game, and the site is run by some SB Nation intern who actually titles headlines like Pirates Trade for First Baseman, put Outfielder on IR…. no names, may not even know the names.

It’s bleak AF. All they can do is dream on what they will get for Frazier and eventually Hays….

So every team hates Arte? I would think that most of the opposition would be happy that we’re stuck with him.

There is a reason his longest stay is 5 years. He is squirrelly, and uneven. He runs out of gas around the 7th inning after talking 90 mph about the Game for 2 hours and injecting himself in about everything. We deserve a real professional PxP person that knows how to call the game on the field.

Deserve? I mean, all we really deserve is the right to battle bears and packs of wolves with sharpened sticks for a dead possum we desperately need to eat for a couple decades before we freeze to death or die from a cut on our big toe at age 32. Sutton taking a season to get better at PxP is something I think we can survive. If he still sucks at the end of next season I hope they fire him and replace him with a woman so no one is allowed to complain no matter how much she sucks….. then I hope she is Jason Bateman in Dodgeball comically bad but we keep her for ten years till she runs for governor and wins.

My nephew, who I haven’t seen in two years, is visiting from Florida. He’s not really into baseball but wanted to see Ohtani play. So my dad and I took him to the game last night and my goodness. Seeing how in awe he was and how excited he got every time Ohtani did something was truly amazing. Probably one of my favorite experiences going to a game because of his reactions.

Idk about you, but this is how you grow the game. You market the hell out of what Ohtani is doing, lure people to watch him live and BOOM you have now created a new fan. I have a friend who was always skeptical about Ohtani. He was at the game last night and right after it bought an Ohtani jersey. My dad, who is very picky on which jersey’s he purchases, even said he’s getting an Ohtani jersey. The man is a unicorn and just a freak of nature. Give him a blank check Arte and extend him this offseason. I have seen enough!

I am forever grateful to Billy Eppler from steering Ohtani away from Jedi to come the Angels. Too bad Jerry. 😎

granted, Shohei’s been healthy and Mikey not but the Trout wRC+ is 191 to Shohei’s 175. What I mean is, Mike is still the man but combined….well, we’ve never had a combo like this.

This is totally cherry-picking and we saw how quickly Trout fell out of “locked-in” status this year, but…

Ohtani is locked in right now. And he clearly wasn’t in April/May. I expect those numbers to keep soaring.

But if those are the numbers including Trout’s bit not being locked in … well, that is a good look for when we have Trout back in a couple of weeks. Do you not think he will have another locked-in period? Even not locked in, Trout is miles better (on offense and defense) than the OF we have been running out there.

I was basically talking in circles there to explain that I think Ohtani will have a better per-rate season than Trout in 2021. It was pretty confusing, as I see now.

Gonna need them to pitch to Trout, and not at Trout, for things to get better.

They sure like to hit the really nice guy with the ball

Attended my first game since Sept 26 2019. So awesome to be there for this game. The crowd was electric any time Ohtani emerged from the dugout. Absolutely incredible. What Å game.

I am completely speechless. 81 games in. Exactly 1/2 of the season. Ohtani’s first half may be the best I’ve ever seen. Without him this team would probably be 12-15 games under .500.

just saw the replay of the game winning hit. No question there. I guess the Orioles had nothing to lose by challenging the call but he was obviously safe. No weird intent or blocking on the Orioles catcher. That was a clean play.

So….40-41. Not bad, considering no Trout.

I saw that ball get through and I already decided the game was over. Didn’t realize how close that play was until I woke up from my dancing celebration to look toward the plate.

What made it close was that Walsh hit that ball so damn hard, got to the OF quickly.

Take a good look at the replay of the final run Ohtani scores. It is evident to me that Severino intentionally body blocked Ohtani after the tag. He should be fined for that.

Nah, I feel he’s swiping and then Ohtani’s force spins him around. He looks to be going in with just his glove to me.

one thing to look at is Ippei running on the field with the team….I think he thought Ohtani might be hurt laying on the ground….appears to have a concerned look on his face.

I see where you’re coming from, but it’s actually wrong.

As the tag is applied, the catcher has textbook footing/location. As he raises his glove and hand upward, the mass hits Ohtani’s chin – making him flop backwards – making the scene look much more violent than it actually was.

Screencap of the tag (the swipe up of the tag is immediately after this):comment image

With Bundy and Quintana out of the rotation who knows? Canning and the BP still worry me.

I would just like to *feel* competitive, even if we don’t get there.

I still think we’re done for the year, but i’ve been wrong before…
