After a shaky first few innings Griffin Canning looked like every bit the first round talent we were stoked to get in round two. He surrendered one measly run over 6 2/3rds innings on a very economical 89 pitches. When 60 of 89 are in the strike zone, good things happen.
Tony Two Bags started the scoring with a double in the third inning that cashed in Justin Upton and Shohei Ohtani, who crossed the plate just before the bomb he hit last night landed in the Las Vegas desert.
KC cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. The lack of a shutdown inning really the only kink in Canning’s armor tonight. Prior to leaving the game he faced 21 consecutive batters without going to a 3 ball count.
The Angels offense woke up in the 6th and changed a tight 2-1 game to a 5-1 score. Jose Iglesias punched a beautiful double down the right field line for one RBI and Keon Wong placed a perfect blooper over short for two
Looking for reasons to get excited, Angels fans:
Mayers was again shutdown, getting four outs. Justin Upton definitely saved a hit for him.
A tack on run in the bottom of the 8th pushed the lead to 8-1 and a well rested Raisel Iglesias came in to close out the 9th.
Angels sweep KC. 11-5 over the last 16 games with a road trip to Arizona starting Friday.
It would be nice to have an above .500 team by the All star break. The pitching just needs to pitch the way it has the last week or so.
Is it just me or has this team become interesting (and not in a weird morbid fascination with wasting the career of the greatest player of a generation way) lately? All of a sudden we are playing .688 ball over the last couple of weeks. The lineup isn’t just Shohei and a series of immobile lumps of Play-Doh. Defense seems to be getting better (Upton making circus catches? Who had that in the betting pool?). Starters are lasting more than three innings so the bullpen actually has a chance to perform instead of being beaten to death like old plow horses. This is a seriously fun team to watch these days.
This is the way the team looked the first week of the season. Was fun and exciting to watch, it’s gettting back to that now. And all this great play is being done without Trout. Swap Lagares out for the GOAT and this team is REALLY looking positive for the second half of the season. It’s baseball, 162 games is a long season.
We will still need more Rendon though
If you pay him, he will show
Canning made it past the 3rd inning without having already thrown 97 pitches !!!! Could he finally be taking that next step to becoming a top notch MLB pitcher?
Stattsi’s foul ball catch was the highlight of the night.
Great series sweep! We have a nice chance to get to .500 or better with three against the Dbacks next. Need to take advantage!

Great series, and definitely a great day for baseball! Still seriously can’t wait for Trout to come back.
Yes I predict we will win every night, but I don’t predict sweeps and I got tis one, yeesss!!!
Our starting pitching may just be good enough to make it to the Playoffs dragging us along. We are winners! Go Halos, Go Angels!

SWEEP!!
Nice!!
Been nicer if literally every other team in the division hadn’t won tonight. 🙄
and whether they bought a new trashcan or not, that HOU lineup is looking even scarier now. Glad we don’t have to face them for another two months.
And in the meanwhile, yes, we have to beat the A’s.
