LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

The Mets fired their hitting coaches Chili Davis and Tom Slater.

Meanwhile, the Pirates released Brian Goodwin.

As many of you may know, Shohei Ohtani was scratched in favor of Jose Quintana. Joe Maddon says his elbow is too sore to throw.

Griffin Canning, on the other hand, is going to be fine.

The Angels claim that Anthony Rendon is fine after hitting that foul ball off of his knee. Fine in this case is defined as “day to day.”

The Angels gave no reason for Mike Mayers to be on the injured list and so there is speculation that it is related to COVID-19.

Paul Campbell of the Marlins received an 80 game suspension for an anabolic steroid with a rather long name. He says he doesn’t know how that got there.

Roberto Alomar resigned from the Hall of Fame Board because of allegations of sexual misconduct.

The Angels are tied with the San Diego Padres for most errors in Major League Baseball.

That’s Tony Gonsolin with the Dodgers. Not to be confused with Phil Gosselin, who is not to be confused with Goose Gossage, who will not be confused with Rabbit Maranville or Oil Can Boyd, much less Milton Bradley, Dick Pole, Urban Shocker, Coco Crisp, Boof Bonser, or Rusty Kuntz.

Hope that helps!

Actually, no it doesn’t. 😀

Damn. I don’t wanna be wasting anyone’s precious time; I want to provide truly useful info.

So: The Cardinals had a .245 hitting catcher named Pickles Dillhoefer, whose last year was 1921.

If that doesn’t help, I don’t know what to say.

Additionally: Johnny Dickshot – who was nicknamed “Ugly” by teammates – debuted with the Pirates in 1936, played until he got drafted, and ended his career in 1945 with the White Sox.

[INSERT YOUR OWN JOKES HERE]

Let’s hope Tony “Two Bags” Rendon comes back soon and we don’t have to worry about Phil “Crotchface”* Gosselin mucking things up for us too badly at 3rd.

*I just gave him that nickname. Just now.

I completely got on board with a pitch to contact staff and a solid defense. Hard contact and bad defense isn’t a good recipe but I think it can be fixed.

Upton/Trout is a pretty bad start in the outfield but Legares should be back soon, followed by Marsh hopefully this summer. Ideally Legares and Marsh would play CF but in the real world they will take RF from a negative to a positive.

Getting Walsh to first takes Albert off first, turning yet another negative into a positive.

Rendon being healthy and Iglesias playing like he has the rest of his career would fix the rest.

I can see the defense getting better. The pitching, not so much.

The White Sox, rivaling the Angels for the league’s best offense, pick up Brian Goodwin.

Tied with San Diego in the National League for most errors, what that tells me is our replacements and corners have problems fielding. Albert at age (Pick whatever you want as to his age.) is having his own issues at first, but we only have one Walsh.

The great second baseman Roberto Alomar has resigned for sexual misconduct in 2014 which is after reporting that he had been diagnosed with HIV. 7 teams in 17 years as I never understood why. Maybe self control issues. It hurts when one of your favs is maybe not that great after all.

When you hear (I don’t know how that got there”) that denial then you know what that MLB player is talking about.

Well raise your hand if it surprises you that Shohei has a sore elbow.

Rendon will head to IL. Likely 10 day.

This next stretch of games could make or break the season.

If Rendon misses the next 10 games we are totally screwed. It would have been hard enough to beat the teams coming up in our schedule with him, but playing without him???

We saw how we performed when he was out previously and it was not good.

Seriously, the season could be over by May 15th!! We could easily go 1-7 on this home stand, and then lose 2or 3 in Houston.

Right now we are 13-14. We could be staring at a 15-21 record, or even 14-22.
Imagine that. With two of the top three AL MVP candidates our season could be over by mid May. This is simply unacceptable.

We as fans have to demand more from this organization. And the fingers need to be pointed directly at Arturo Moreno.

Agree on all fronts. I have said if the team could be .500 at the end of May that would be a huge accomplishment. Even more so if Rendon misses substantial time.

This is Arte and yet more than Arte. The lack of a Baseball Organization and the focus in marketing has been the subject of many of my rants.

The team has not successfully drafted pitching – that’s a lot on Eppler. There really is no one on the farm to fill in the blanks. So the team has a solid A lineup with a C- pitching rotation. I have always felt pitching is 60% of the game so the weighted average of those grades is a 2.56 or a solid C to C+ which is exactly where this team is in my opinion. Average.

Without a stable of pitchers like the successful organizations have, there is nowhere to turn but Free Agency. Without signing the top pitchers, the available guys like Cobb and Q do little but frustrate.

My personal feeling is that it’s time to trade away the top offense talent in the Org (Adell and Marsh) to obtain too-line pitching. The time is now.

Even though we have failed to develop pitchers from within we STILL would have been a lot better off if we simply took advantage of the opportunities in the FA market.

I was also calling for us to trade for Kluber last year, and yes, I was willing to give up Marsh. We have a good enough offense to trade at least one of Adell/Marsh. Pitching is that important, I agree with you on the importance of pitching.

I also disagreed with all the people who said Cole and Bauer were “not worth it.” While an organization should not consistently go over the luxury tax threshold I thought it made sense to do so to acquire either of those guys. Because of where we are in Trout’s career arc it made all the sense in the world. The unwillingness of the organization to do this falls squarely on Arte.

Make or break – let’s find out. Oh wise and powerful Maddon Ball, will the Angels win more than they lose over the next 10 games?

Re-sign Goodwin! We need a RF to fill in for a month or two until either Adell/Marsh are called up. Fowler done for the year. Jay, sucks. Rojas, not a true OF. Lagares, meh. Walsh, needs to stay at 1B so Pujols plays less. What do they have to lose bringing back Goody?

Lagares is still hurt, right? He was raking in ST. Jay is gone, and Schebler is ok, but more 4th OF. I don’t think Goody is the answer, but could be a stop gap (but so could Lagares/Schebler/Ward. If we want to ‘fix’ RF, then we need to trade for someone serious, and let Walsh be our 1B. I suspect that doesn’t happen this year, and the hope is Adell or Marsh make the club next season, and Walsh is the full-time 1B.

Last paragraph of Fabian Ardaya’s piece on Halo pitching woes in The Athletic today-

That has been enough to essentially waste what, through Monday’s action, has been the best lineup in baseball by wRC+ (115). The polar extremes of elite and downright awful have resulted in one excruciatingly mediocre end product.

Fabian is the man. The Athletic is worth the money and not that silly ass ESPN.

Not that I expect any immediate moves but Perry’s bold statements about pitching and run prevention at his press conference will be his epitaph. The fact is, he allowed himself to get bamboozled by his manager (who has deep ties with the owner) and picked-up underwhelming players. It is early but he should be feeling pressure. My hope is that he doing an incredible job building up scouting and player development as I might find that to offset some of the woeful on-field product.

Pre-season hypothesis: The Angels will win a lot of games!!

Real world testing:

1) Except when the team faces the other team’s #1 or # 2 pitcher (see the corollary that baseball games cannot be won without scoring runs);

2) Except when the other team faces the Angels 3rd, 4th or 5th starter (with the possible exception if the Angels score 7 or more runs)

3) Except when injuries occur to key players (see Pujols batting 4th);

4) Except when the Angels face a left-hander;

5) Except when the Angels face a rookie pitcher they have never seen before;

6) Except when the offense leaves more than 8 LOBsters;

7) Except when the Angels #1 or #2 starter is having an off day;

8) Except when the Angeks face adversity like the other team having a Covid scare and they lose momentum as a result;

9) Except when Pujols kills rallies by hitting into more that 1 double play in a game (see corollary when Pujols tries to tag-up on a shallow ground ball);

10) Except when the offense isn’t firing on all cylinders (see corollary that scoring 7 runs allows team to win).

Revised hypothesis: The Angels will win a lot of games where they score 7 or more runs.

Further revised hypothesis: The Angels will win somewhere in the neighborhood of as many times as they lose.

I’ll believe Rendon is fine if that’s still the diagnosis after follow up tests today. That just looked brutal, similar to Yelich’s a couple seasons ago.
