LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Trout, Rendon, Ohtani

Both Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon are on the mend.  In fact, they both started Monday’s game. Mike Trout was on fire! Luis Rengifo was optioned down to the taxi squad to make room.

Here’s where to go for your single game Angels tickets.

I missed it yesterday, but Jon Jay was outrighted to the minors on Friday.

This article about Unsung Building Blocks for each team contains a nice positive write up about Chris Rodriguez. The Angels like Chris Rodriguez in his current role.  His stuff is good enough to get himself back out of trouble.

Non-Angels Links

The Rockies and their General Manager, Jeff Bridich, have mutually agreed to part ways.  An interim General Manager will finish out the season and the Rockies will search for their new GM next off season.

MLB and the MLBPA had their first meeting to open negotiations toward a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.  It went as expected with both sides sharing their view on the state of the game and their respective priorities in the negotiation process.

So Fernando Tatis, Jr. took a peek back to see where the Dodgers’ catcher set up and it’s being blown up by Dodgers homers as sign stealing.

Madison Bumgarner pitched a seven inning game without giving up a hit, but it wasn’t a no-hitter

Farmer John and the Dodgers have had a falling out.  The Dodger Dogs will now be supplied by a different company.

There’s no other sport in the world as synonymous with a food as baseball is with hot dogs. And what a food! Ground up parts and sodium.

Yet I look forward to said parts each Spring Training.

Minnesota games rescheduled for a 7 inning “double header” that you can’t get a no hitter in but can still get a complete game as a pitcher, is on May 20th.
Can’t buy tickets yet (I was refunded already for the postponed games). So I bet after season ticket holders and people who haven’t been refunded get their seating re-situated that they will go on sale.

“Mariners” In the way Jerry Seinfeld says “Newman”
Mariners Claim Jack Mayfield
By Steve Adams | April 27, 2021 at 2:31pm CDT
The Mariners announced Tuesday that they’ve claimed infielder Jack Mayfieldoff waivers from the Angels and optioned him to their alternate site. Shed Long was transferred to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding roster move.
The slick-fielding Mayfield now joins his third American League West club. He was signed and developed by the Astros but found his way to the Angels via some offseason waiver maneuverings

Now P.T. Manfred is trying out “home run derby” to decide games that end in a tie after 9 innings? Sheeesh, this guy needs his meds checked.

I love this idea for minor league ball. If kept in minor league ball I’m all for it. There’s absolutely no need for an A ball game to go 16 innings. And there’s no way to shuffle the roster to get them more arms for the next few days, either.

So, yeah, my young self at a Bakersfield Dodgers game would stick around to see this. But I better not be asked to do so in Anaheim.

So Bumgarner’s outing doesn’t count as a no-hitter, but does it count as a complete game?

Years ago I went to two Dodgers games in the same season. Both times I ended up hurling hours after eating a Dodger Dog. I can still remember the taste in the back of my throat. Since then I cant eat a hotdog unless its covered in chili. So perhaps an update to their dog situation is a good thing? They should get Hebrew National on the phone and work something out, those are some high quality meat sticks.

Watching Ohtani this season reminds me of how fun it was watching Trout his first season. He’s must-see-TV, as is Trout, still. We’re pretty lucky to watch them bat back to back this season. Then Rendon strolls up to the plate after and its just an assortment of riches. This team is one top line starter away from making a serous playoff run.

Boy Oh Boy was last night’s game was a Blast as HR’s were headed up to the Angels in Heaven.

Now it can be said, Trouty has some competition for league MVP and it is on his own team in the name of Shohei Ohtani. What a performance he put on. And Mikey got 4 hits! I wish every night could be similar to last evening.

When will we start seeing 2 or 3 run HR’s?

The talk during Spring Training was the Manfred Ball was going to be wound less tight but it does appear that we have last season’s ball. But our Bull Pen made it though last night.

I too do not attend games at Dodger Stadium since they early ’90’s, but no Dodger Dogs made by Farmer John is weird and I think sales will drop if the new brand does not measure up.

Your question of “When will we start seeing 2 or 3 run HR’s?” is extremely relevant. This team needs to walk more. Rendon will help this cause. Iglesias who has played just about every inning has only 2 walks but our lead off hitter David Fletcher received only his second free pass of the season despite having almost 15% more PA’s than Iglesias. For a lead off hitter that is absolutely unacceptable. This will open up soooo many more opportunities for this team.

I wonder if Joe has thought about tweaking the batting order. Have Fletch bat 2nd..

All I’ll say is flipping Grisham and Tatis Jr and having him bat lead off for Padres seems to be a smart move after last weekend.

Fletch is my 2nd to Trouty fav, but I now realize that maybe Walsh-Fletch-Trouty or Walsh-Trouty-Ohtani might be better combo’s. With that said Fletch has rai8sed his BA + OBP a considerable amount in the last two weeks. Other problem in moving Fletch is where do you put him as he is a force at getting clutch in the #1 hole later in the game. If the Halos continue to win then even know Fletch may only get a BB 30 to 40 times, if he gets 190 to 200+ hits he is more valuable leading off.

Fletcher is very good with man on 3rd, <2 outs. He should hit behind Rendon in front of the “pure” power hitters in Upton and Pujols.

If Trout leadoff won’t happen, my ideal lineup would be something like:
Ohtani-Trout-Walsh-Rendon-Fletcher-Upton-Pujols-Stassi-Iglesias

Once again, why are you wasting a low strikeout, low OBP guy at the top of the lineup?

…the “if it were me”

Trout-Walsh-Ohtani-Rendon-Fletcher-Upton-Pujols-Stassi-Iglesias

or this
Trout-Rendon-Ohtani-Fletcher-Walsh-Upton-Pujols-Stassi-Iglesias
if needed feel free to flip Sho and Fletch

I’m going to CC Joe this chain.

Not sure I would bat the Mighty Fletch in the clean up spot ( he’s still looking for his second double and first home run of the season) Also I’m not really a fan of batting Lefties back to back ( old school I guess) So I like this better:

Trout-Ohtani-Rendon-Walsh-Upton-Fletcher-Pujols-Stassi-Iglesias

or even

Ohtani-Trout-Rendon-Walsh-Upton-Fletcher-Pujols-Stassi-Iglesias

Ohtani would be excellent at leadoff. That dude can do anything.

Fletcher 5th is the move, in my opinion. Put the first four in whatever order you wish (Trout higher for me, for more ABs). Then you have Upton and Pujols, two guys who don’t hit for average but can smack it out of the park at any time. Then the two weakest hitters in Stassi and Iglesias, who don’t hit for much pop but who might be on base when the lineup rolls around again.

As The Book says, lineup construction doesn’t matter much at all, but it’s definitely still fun to think aboug.

Fletcher’s walk last night in the second inning was key. He took a 3-2 pitch, extended the inning, and set Ohtani up for his big double.

Walks will come a bit as guys stop pressing.

Funny. The Angels won last night, scored 9 runs, and you guys are talking about changing the batting order.

True.

I keep looking at this lineup and thinking about how deadly it will be top to bottom once Marsh gets promoted in July. Seriously deep, plenty of lefties, it will be awesome.

Absolutely unbelievable that Farmer John will no longer supply Dodger Dogs. Hearing Vin say ‘Farmer John’ was one of the only reasons I tolerated my friends who were/are Dodger fans. When the old traditions fail, it’s a sad day.

Interesting that the Rockies fired their GM. Bridich was the toast of the town a couple of off-seasons ago when he built up a bullpen that many were saying was rock solid. Boy did that change. Blame the light air.

The Dodger Dog was about the only reason I would consider going to the Latrine if the Angels weren’t playing My Doyer friends have all said the Dogs aren’t as good this year. Now i know why

Smithfield / Farmer John make probably the best hot dogs around, as well as their bacon and sausage. Sounds like The Dodgers didn’t want to compensate Farmer John the amount they were asking in return for their product. it will take emails and letters from disappointed fans complaining about the flavor / quality of the substituted product to reverse this.

Presale for tickets (for some, not me) started yesterday.

Awesome addition with those job postings. Nice to see the industry getting back to ‘normal’ after lay offs.

Last night’s lineup and a little more starting pitching gets to the playoffs I believe. The Rockies’ GM news could be timely too. Let’s kick the tires on Marquez and Gray, and hit up the Nats about Scherzer. We can bail those guys plus Ohtani and Bundy out of shaky starts, but I’m not so sure about Cobb, Canning, and Heaney if/when he regresses.

Real scientific anecdote from playing fantasy baseball this year but it seems like the depth of quality pitching in the league is just down way more than I can remember it being recently. I imagine the trade deadline is going to be a real seller’s market for pitching.
