Today is the deadline for teams to add players to their 40 man roster and thus protect them from the upcoming Rule 5 draft on Dec 10th.
The Angels unsurprisingly added Brandon Marsh and Chris Rodriguez to their 40 man roster. Here is the list of player that did not protect from the Rule 5 draft.
Packy Naughton, LHP #12 prospect
Jose Soriano, RHP #13 prospect
Oliver Ortega, RHP #17 prospect
Livan Soto, SS #19 prospect
Orlando Martinez, OF #23 prospect
Kevin Maitan, 3B/SS/2B #24 prospect
Leonardo Rivas, SS #26 prospect
Jack Kruger
Jose Rojas
Brennon Lund
Gareth Morgan
Idanbel Isabel
Denny Brady
Brendan McCurry
That is one heck of a long list! Naughton was who the Angel received from the Brian Goodwin trade and seems the most likely to be drafted. Naughton is age 24 and hasn’t pitched above AA but could probably hold his own in the majors for the right team. Soriano has been a top pitching prospect for years, but he 22 and hasn’t pitched above A ball and is recovering from TJ surgery which should keep him safe.
Jack Kruger was pretty much the catcher heir apparent at one point in time but the Angels have a huge lack of catching talent now at most levels. Mike Scioscia would not be proud. Billy Eppler picked up Kevin Maitain for 2.2 million in 2017 and he’s fluttered away since then. A few of the guys on the bottom of the list were recently acquisitions so no harm, no foul. They haven’t even put on an Angels jersey yet.
Keep in mind, teams aren’t going to grab most of these guys just because they aren’t on the 40 man roster – but, who are your favorites that didn’t make the cut?

Appears we are filling out of FO.
Hopeful sign. Whatever Minasian’s title is, he seems to have been empowered to create his own team. Hopefully, he has more autonomy in general than DiPoto or Eppler.
For what it’s worth… Middleton is saying on his instagram stories that he’s still an Angel and that fake news got out. But when the fake news is coming from your own instagram by saying Former Angels pitcher…. I don’t know what to make of it.
Him calling himself “Former Angels Pitcher” .. that’s fake news created by himself? What a clown.
I don’t want to lose Nahghten or Soto. Soto’s super young still, but I think he could be really good, even this year. He was kind of undersized, I’d like to see what he does with a little more man muscle on him. He just spent a whole year getting a little bigger I hope. Granted, he’s not ready to play in the MLB, and he’s not an incredible prospect right now, so I can’t see a team keeping him on the 25 man for a season. Kind of the same with Naughten and the rest of this pile, maybe a team like the Orioles will take Naughten, that’s about it.
Jose Soriano seems like a guy we would/should take in the rule 5.
I’m not particularly worried about any of these guys getting claimed. Packy would be most likely to be taken but if he’s who we’re relying on for depth then this season is gonna be as bad as the last five years.
Eppler was great and canceling out anything good he did. A total 0 for assets management. Throw in the poor records , he was below average.
I’m not crying over anybody Minasian doesn’t keep tbh.
But when Eppler types a sentence does it make sense?
Naughton’s situation similar but different than that of trading Noodles and getting nothing in return to speak of. So the end result of Billy Oopsler is he found some nuggets in La Stella and Goodwin and shit canned them away as he knew the end was in sight. He was a class act, so what is the return if we traded Naughton and Barretto, what would we get? A bill for the plane fare and a bag of dirty socks. Lots of laughs.
WuT? We iraded for Packy Naughton just to leave hin unprotected?
How full is our 40-man? I agree that is weird, but (with my optimistic lens in), few players are ever selected and most of them are returned. The odds of losing Packy are slim even still.
Yeah, and keep in mind that Minasian wasn’t the one who traded for Naughton. It’s quite possible he has a much different view of Naughton’s potential than Eppler does
That’s OK
Therz alweez plenty uv Hansel Robles, Ty Buttreys, and Parker Bridwells to fill the LA Coliseum. Don’t werry……really don’t! 😎
If Eppler can bump into them like a blind squirrel then surely a allegedly superior GM like Perry Minasian can find more of the same!
If it makes you feel any better, MLB Trade Rumors listed Goodwin as a non-tender candidate. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/11/offseason-outlook-cincinnati-reds-12.html
I’m gonna be shocked if Naughten is drafted. I stress on this every year, then I look at the past few years of Rule 5 Drafts and realize hardly anyone drafts anyone, no one gets kept, and Naughten is probably way back on the list of “maybe he can throw us some solid innings” pitchers for most GMs. We pretty much protected the two guys a GM would have taken a 25 man roster spot flyer on.
What GM would be stoopid enuff to have taken one of our’s who was a Eppler guy?
We took Maitan to make our pathetic farm system 10 places above what it deserved ( #16 with Jo Adell and Griffin Canning in 2019…..LMFAO!!! ).
Why do you make your first sentence bold?
Is it a “hot Eppler take” signal? Here’s a picture of a bowl of oatmeal. Please, stick your rage boner for Eppler into it and find a way to draw a connection between it and how much the guy who isn’t our GM anymore is the worsiest. We all can’t wait to see what you come up with.
