Andrew Heaney shows up for 2020 and leads the Angels in a shutout over the Padres

The most remarkable thing about this entire game (and the last one for that matter) can be summed up here:

No one could have predicted the Angels would shut out the Padres, let alone Andrew Heaney throwing a career high 117 pitches in an absolute gem of a performance. He allowed only 3 hits on 6 Ks over 7 innings.

But wait! There’s more! Justin Upton notched 2 hits and drove in one of the Angels two runs, Jared Walsh hit a double, Anthony Rendon got a triple, and as a team, the Angels only struck out 2 times against starter Mike Clevinger. Was I watching the right game??

New Angel Franklin Barreto also did something I hadn’t seen before, so kudos to him. Here he is bunting a ball off his own head:

Mike Mayers and Felix Pena came out of the pen to shut this one down. Both of these guys have emerged as perhaps the two best relievers for the Angels this year.

Chalk up a big win for the Angels as they shutout the Padres who have only been shut out one other time all season (by the Dodgers)!

I applaud the victory, the team played good especially the pitching staff.

However, take the long view and please keep giving the kids at-bats. At this point the wins are meaningless except for individual player stats. Secure one of the top two draft choices and focus on 2021 and beyond.

As I mentioned on Facebook, all the bad teams will win 18 to 20 games. We only have 13 so we’re still safe and can even win another 5.

With new top management and new GM who know how to plan and set goals and how to achieve them we can turn the corner before the average fan turns Blue. This organization needs rebuilding and fast otherwise the only winners are the owner and his cronies and Trouty’s Great Grand kids.

At this point a win here and there will just take us out of the running for the one or two draft picks that we desperately need more than the wins you hope for. We can not rebuild this mess that we are in with a few more wins. We need all of the draft picks we can get lower than others in the league. We need money for International signing to supplement what we have.top franchises 8 out of 10 seasons and we need new leadership. We do not need friends of the owners any longer. We need Baseball People like what the Dodgers went out and got. Just like the White Sox did. So every beginning has a start, this bad team might actually be a beginning of a new start. We have the pieces to start with Trout and Rendon and Fletcher and maybe Simba and Bundy and maybe Heaney.

Heaney has good games when it doesn’t matter and is below average when it actually matters. He still doesn’t belong higher than #5 on a serious roster trying to compete for a playoff spot. I’m going to look into his choking ways when I catch up with work. His WAR just doesn’t balance out him helping to tank our season early on.

Sort of agree. While it is encouraging to see Heaney flash the form a lot of us hoped was in him, we need THAT performance in the all-important first week of the season when the die is cast for our seasonal destiny.

If he can deliver that performance in the opening series of 2021 against a stacked and hungry White Sox lineup when we really need a win (game # 1-3) then I will be impressed.

Mayers brought in with nobody on base, good results. Heaney did not allow BB to score. Great fielding plays as usual. Timely hitting. All against a good team with a very good pitcher and we out played them. Only negetive is we lost a chance to make up a game for #1 choice.

Really glad for Heaney. I’ve always really liked him.

my prediction of us blowing it in the 8th didn’t happen, though. My algorithm must be off.

Barreto is elite. How many players do you know that can do that? My man

He may be “elite”, but he’s certainly not “premium”.

It’s clear that neither you nor Heaney are quantum physicists, or he’d have gone for 118, which is part of an “Island of Stability”.
