LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Trading Places

Yesterday marked the trading deadline for the 2020 season and the San Diego Padres acted like they had an advanced copy of the orange report. They added the Mike Clevinger, by far the best player traded this year, on top of their already considerable haul.

The guys in San Diego will need name tags but the entire NL West was pretty active, including Arizona shipping out some notable players in Starling Marte and closer Archie Bradley.

Angels GM Billy Eppler flipped outfielder Brian Goodwin to the Cincinnati Reds for Packy Naughton and a PTBNL.

Normally that means a live body in a few weeks but with only players on the active roster or taxi squad capable of being named in a trade there is some intrigue into who else will head to Tempe next March. Sources tell Yahoo that another pitcher is headed this way.

Who is Packy Naughton? Outside of his epic name, he was the Reds Minor League Starter of the Year last year.

Fangraphs is more mixed on Packy, first giving him a FV grade of 45 (on a scale of 20-80) then dropping some praise and a Ryan Yarbrough comparison.

Jahmai Jones was promoted to the big league club yesterday. Jam was one of the first players to respond to my interview requests and he’s chatted with us several times. He’s a genuinely great guy and I’m extremely happy for him.

Sometime between now and next season get to know Brandon Marsh because the door is now wide open for him. Marsh/Trout/Adell…..a boy can dream on that outfield.

If the buzz of the trade deadline made you forget there was a game yesterday, you aren’t alone. The Angels offense forgot too, putting the team back in front of Seattle in the draft order. Or did they?

And while I know it isn’t baseball, seeing Boston eliminated in any sport puts a smile on my face.

Be safe, everyone.

Bleacher Report posted an article on Tyler Skaggs’ fallout from his family’s perspective, specifically Debbie and Carli. Great but heartbreaking article that I encourage everyone to read.

Yankee announcer John Sterling didn’t “know who Fangraph is” on the broadcast. Pretty funny but also, how can you work in baseball and not know who Fangraph is? 😂

Re: Draft order.

Manfred will use his authority so that the MFY and BoSux draft first, followed by the Doyers.

Draft order is one of the things that concerns me. How can that simply wait to be determined without being impartial?

Theoretically, draft order is irrelevant to the decisions teams make, so it shouldn’t matter when it is decided. But in reality, delaying the decision definitely creates an appearance of favoritism if any change to the usual practice is made.

I don’t disagree. I was just pointing out that since losing on purpose is against the rules, draft order shouldn’t technically matter. Just like how much your parents can afford to donate to a school shouldn’t matter for college admissions.

Because of the way the draft works, there’s a huge difference that a couple slots can make. It can change an entire team’s strategy. If the Angels were a couple picks higher in 2016, would they have just taken Alex Kiriloff or Blake Rutherford (both prep OFers) instead of sandbagging their first rounder so Brandon Marsh could be signable? Ton of implications incoming, so this’ll be fascinating to track.

With Barreto coming and Fletcher’s ankle better in a day or so I imagine Jones will be sent down and possibly for Marsh?

Or maybe not. Simba sticking around definitely creates a log jam for getting the young guys AB’s.

Superutility is a stretch for Jam. He can play second base and left field, but the arm is too noodly to be viable anywhere else. Would be cool if he can hit, considering how much the Angels tinkered with his swing.

I’m super interested to see how Jam’s new swing plays. Seems like there is very little weight shift now and thus not going to generate much power. I’m interested to see if we turned this guy into a weak hitting slapper or he just has such natural power and strength he doesn’t need to take big step.

Agreed. He’s an extremely strong guy but it hasn’t translated to the diamond yet. With such an upright swing and no leg kick/toe tap, there’s no load to create the power or assist with timing. I’m not optimistic or pessimistic, just ‘mistic.

Eppler did what he could with what little he had
OTH most his situation was caused by his own doing too. Arte didn’t draft Matt Thaiss in 2016, Billy Eppler did, nor did Arte do last year’s debacle with Will Wilson either. Holding on to any of Billy Eppler’s draftees is at least a shaky ordeal at best as opposed to a Dodger’s or Oakland A’s prospect. Unfortunately Arte is gonna have to do what he doesn’t wanna do…….allow the next BASEBALL MAN GM AND NOT JUST ANOTHER ANALYTICS DRONE to come in and fire and hire new and better people. SWEEPING BIG CHANGES HAVE TO HAPPEN…..

I give Eppler a C+/B- for the trade deadline. I believe he did his best with what he had to offer. Although it would have been preferred that he thinned the herd further to deepen the farm, there’s not many tradeable assets on the team.

I was really looking forward to seeing what we’d get for Simba. Glad we still have Bundy which is not good for the Tank.

I think I going to start watching Angel’s A squad play down in San Diego. G-Rich, Clevinger, Castro might cancel out Machado for me

Tatis is a joy to watch as well. Saw a game in Petco last year, dude went 4/4. He really knows how to hit, not just a masher.

Been enjoying them for a bit too. Lived in the city for a few years so I feel like I can rationalize a little bit of the band wagoning, but the truth is, I can’t hardly watch the Angels everyday now. Padres haven’t won anything in so long, and them having a chance to poke the Dodgers in the eye, what’s not to root like?! Besides, you are totally right, lots of ex-Angels there now too. Alas, I too can’t ever seem to root for Machado, and it’s almost gotten worse watching him play more often. It’s the lack of hustle that get’s me every time.
