LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Dark Clouds

The Angels will furlough non-playing employees on June 1. This includes people who are involved in baseball operations. If there wasn’t already pressure on both sides to get an agreement to start baseball again, there sure will be now. We’ll see what happens.

Calcaterra posits that the discussions are getting tougher.

MLB Trade Rumors is running a little experiment for Angel fans. They want to know which Angels you would protect in an expansion draft. After removing pending Free Agents, MLBTR automatically protects Trout, Rendon, Upton, Pujols, Ohtani, Adell, and Canning. We as fans are left to choose eight remaining players from a pool of non-prospects. Without too much thought, I chose to protect Barria, Bundy, Buttrey, Fletcher, Rengifo, Robles, Sandoval, and Suarez. Here’s the direct link to the poll.

Mike Trout’s rookie card sells for $900K! I do not have that kind of cash, so it clearly was not me.

CBS wonders if there will be MLB expansion in the near future to try and recoup losses.

Article on MLB trade rumors about Baltimore aggressively pruning their minor league rosters, cutting 37 players. With the Angels furloughing employees left and right seems possible that the Halos are considering something similar.

I’ve been watching the post-game festivities after Game 7, 2002, at mlb.com. So good!

I’d forgotten that Jackie had Gene Autry’s hat with her on that stage. That’s not me crying…I don’t know what that sound is.

Eck was wearing it at one point.

Passan and Rosenthal both with pretty sharp critiques today of the Angels furloughs to scouts, baseball ops etc.

I think the org always does itself a disservice by essentially No-Commenting these pieces when reached out to. The optics definitely are bad but I imagine they are hardly the only team doing this or on the verge of doing it in the next month or so.

It’s very cold to do it prior to the draft but with a 5 round draft and the possibility for no high school and college baseball seasons for a WHILE…scouts that are not allowed to travel may not necessarily be the worst place to save a few million if the franchise is running on fumes and possibly going to have to pay players their full pro-rated salaries.

I wouldn’t do it this way but I suspect the Angels wont be the last.

I’ve been a big supporter of Arte, but I’m having problems with this. As the kids today say, the optics are horrible.

mlb.com has a article about the best single game by a batter for each team. Ours is the epochal 10 RBI night by GA against the Skankees. Nice to relive an absolutely killer evening.

i’d go with Vlad’s 9 rbi vs Pedro and the chowds (6-2-04), mainly because it was one of the few regular games in Anaheim i’ve attended this century and it was with my daughters. As stellar a career Mussina had, Pedro was better (likewise Vlad > GA) and the chowds are more obnoxious that than MFY. Vlad’s was the club record at the time

Either way we STFU of the interlopers.

Maybe Salmon’s G2 in WS2002 was best though (4-4 w/ 2 HR, 10 TB, 4 RBIs) in a game we had to win.

Haven’t read it, but I’m guessing that for the MFY, it was A-Fraud’s 3HR, 9RBI night against Bartolo (he missed the homer cycle by a solo shot).

Trout cards are good investments. I have 2 Trout rookie cards I bought for $650, 4 months ago, and can now flip for 3k.

Choosing only 8 is harder than I thought it would be. It is a question of potential, fan favorites, pitching vs. position player preference. Is one ready to give up on Heaney, Keynan, etc.? Does one see more potential in Rengifo than the more positionally flexible Walsh?

Easier to say who I wouldn’t mind having on the block (Stassi, for example).

Curious that they would protect Pujols and Upton. I know they have no trade clauses but would a no trade clause prohibit selection in an expansion draft?

A “No Trade” clause would prohibit selection in an expansion draft. They would have to get the player to waive the clause (Usually takes a hefty monetary bonus).

I went mostly with pitching, except for Fletch and Walsh.

* Fletch
* Buttrey
* Robles
* Walsh
* Peters
* Bundy
* Keynan
* Heaney

Please, MLB and MLBPA, stop playing Chicken and get this season started. The psyche of a nation is depending upon you.
