LA Angels Weekend News Crash: KISS

Had an interesting experience I figured I’d share. Last Saturday I requested credentials simply to watch Detmers pitch and hopefully get to interview Joyce before the game. When I got on the field for batting practice I noticed some photographers wearing KISS Football hats and some other guys I had not seen before.

While sitting in the press club eating dinner and thinking I had 45 minutes to kill, Rhett Bollinger said KISS was throwing out the first pitch and he was heading down there. That’s when it dawned on me that the video boards had KISS graphics up and I’d seen several KISS shirts on the concourses. Sure enough, I checked the promo schedule and it was KISS night complete with a fireworks show with their music.

Now, I’m not a big KISS fan but these guys are legends. So I headed to the field, met them, watched them throw out the first pitch and it was awesome. Once the first pitch is thrown they want everybody off the field quickly and I just kind of walked with the group and just happened to end up with Simmons crew for a while. Gene and Paul were really chill guys. The pay On SI might not be great, but the perks are.

Now enjoy some Jeff is heading to vacation links.

Looking for reasons to keep watching the Angels? Mike Trout, Wade Meckler, and Denzer Guzman are the top three on the position player front.

The over arching story is the rebuild. If George Klassen can pitch anywhere close to the way he did this week, the rebuild is gaining some serious momentum.

I really think the development of Grayson Rodriguez is key to establishing a solid rotation in the short term. His Stuff+ metrics are still well above average, so a quality pitcher should be lurking in there. Need to get that oh so elusive command.

Grayson is a guy who was fed tons of data in the Baltimore system. It is no secret integrating analytics is the real reason Mike Maddux was fired and it foreshadows a huge change in the Angels front office and development programs. Rodriguez is one of three young starters who stand to benefit the most from this new approach.

Speaking of stuff, Ben Joyce’s is unreal.

Now, back to the rebuild.

Hayden Alvarez is getting some love on FanGraphs but not yet being mentioned much by baseball scribes.

Jake Munroe is the best prospect nobody is talking about.

From around baseball:

Kyle Tucker is having a miserable run and Dodgers fans are letting him know it. So he cried in the dugout.

But at least he didn’t allegedly commit huge amounts of financial crimes to bankroll the team. Fortunately, financial crimes are legal now if you are rich enough.

The atmosphere for the Cubs vs. White Sox series was electric. I watched two of the games.

Happy trails to Trey Mancini. The Angels let him go so he could try to latch on with another team but it did not work. So he is retiring to spend more time with his baby girl and wife. Trey’s story is incredible and so is he. I’m going to end this column with my favorite interview of all time.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I’m spending 4 days with my family before the boy goes back to school.

I hate the Dodgers, but I don’t wish any player getting booed by the home fans, like he has been. To actually break down and cry in the dugout Tucker must be really close to the breaking point. Reminds me of when the Angels first signed Bostock and he got off to a really rough start, I don’t remember our fans booing him, but interviews he was said that he was feeling the pressure to perform and felt like he was letting himself, the team and fans down.

I really don’t want to see the Dodgers win, but I hope Tucker gets back on track and puts everything on behind him.

If I put my P12 glasses on I can see the potential for a window to open in 2028. The pitching should be fully ready to go and we may have as much as 150M to spend if needed and desired. If Raudi, Cozart, and Munroe, and possibly some others are ready to go, we may be ready to rock.

We need to be patient though and not get ahead of ourselves. We need more prospects.

I love you Doyer fan. Eres la llama traviesa dentro de mi corazon. I have a group of friends who are politically active and go for duh Doyers. On a single Saturday they went to a meeting to organize direct action against oppressive billionaires and their corporations. Then they spent the evening at Chavez Latrine.

They were rooting for a team that forcefully evicted 300 mostly Latino families from their neighborhood in 1959. There was a little skull cracking that went on before this too by the LAPD…. but that’s OK I guess, look, Fernando! Now they are owned by a family trust’s money and Mark Walter. The Guggenheims founded ASARCO and made their fortune extracting gold in the Yukon, copper in Alaska and Chile, tin in Bolivia, and rubber and diamonds in the Belgian Congo…. you know, killing poor people in mines and cutting off the hands of Congolese people who didn’t want to tap rubber tress while collecting rent and selling food and equipment to al of them…. but that’s OK, they built a museum in New York that hosts wine parties. Oh look! Mookie! We love Mookie.

Hell, ASARCOs massive smelting business is one of the hugest polluters in the history of man kind. There is even a theory that the weird prevalence of serial killers in the Southern Puget Sound/Tacoma area in the 80s is from lead exposure from their huge plant. Basically the Doyers owners might have given us Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer with all their pollution while Doyer fans are the most prone to green virtue signaling in the league. But it’s cool…. look everyone! OHTANI!

Then we have the current most involved Gugger, who is a property developer in LA, and Mark Walter, who makes a ton of money selling insurance. Oh, and committing fraud. Basically the two industries built on screwing as many people as hard as they can in order to make money. The Doyers just need to get a pharmaceutical owner on board and they’ll have the asshole hat trick…. but it’s OK, look everybody! SKUBAL! We collect Cy Young winners like socks!

But Frank McCourt was the scum bag.

And none of this even touches on how the Dodgers ensured the Angels would be financially screwed for decades after they were founded. Wanna know why the Angels get made fun of for their “of Anaheim of LA” crap? Look into why they had to move out there in the first place.

The Doyer fan base is a wet turd, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a mystery. A machine raging against itself. You could probably beat a child to death with a puppy and Doyer fan will cheer for you as long as you win and have “guy with authentic street accent” do your radio spots. I hate the Dodgers.

Be well.

Virtue signalers being hypocrites isn’t shocking to me

Much is made of coaching up young players. The story of JD Martinez is interesting. After coming up and having some success, he stopped hitting. He then got advice from Jason Castro about some coaches in California.

“The day after the season ended, Martinez was in Santa Clarita for an appointment with hitting experts Robert Van Scoyoc and Craig Wallenbrock.”

$150 Million in salary is the Paul Harvey “Rest of the Story”.

Tank tidbits. We are currently behind the A’s by two games and one game behind the Rockies. It is hard not rooting for the Halos, so we root for them while watching them on TV or listening to Terry but losing isn’t that difficult at the end of the game like in the past. If drafting in our best position so we rebuild and stock up means a run for the rose’s then I can stand it. Drafting is not going to be fun in ’28, so we really need a solid ’27 draft. 😀

The odds for the bottom 3 are virtually the same, while the drop-off between 3rd and 4th is significant.

We probably aren’t out-tanking A’s or Rockies. We can’t fall behind the Royals

If I’m the Dodgers, I agree with Karros and would try something else. Give him a week or so off to work on it. Maybe Tucker needs a different mental skills coach. Perhaps the Dodgers’ guy, Brent Walker, isn’t working for him right now. Maybe he needs to go to Lorenzo Garmendia at Gradum, the guy that fixed Caleb Durbin’s swing and approach mid season. Maybe just releasing the tears will switch on something. The guy is too good and was too consistent over multiple seasons. It’s a good bet that he’ll be back. Not that I don’t love the Dodgers spent all that money on a replacement level player, but I don’t like seeing players suffer and hope for him he can fix it soon. I thought his numbers would be more anemic than they are, but his defense is dragging down his WAR more than the hitting. Definitely not earning his pay, but he’s shown how good he can be if he catches fire.

Let me add – I thought the money the Dodgers gave him was a ridiculous overpay.

Perry’s pitching 🧪 did not die in vain.

Your Anaheim Angels now use analytics and develop pitchers. Get used to it 🚀

I will give him credit there. A lot of teams love the Wake Forest pitchers because they have already gone through their lab – which is incredible if you haven’t seen it. A lot of times teams see their guys as being more ready. Having a cohesive system throughout the levels should pay off dividends over time. Kudos there Perry.

Great writeup on the starting pitching. It makes me optimistic the team avoids the whole “Urena then Klassen then not much action”. Enjoy the family time.

Bremner at AA? Sheesh, and there are still those that think PTP was decent GM because he worked Arturo’s way and may have been better than Eppler. Well, they both were not good GM’s. Maybe if there is another stop Minasian it will work out. He certainly did not know how to draft was shown by leaving Anderson and Hernandez off his top 2 list.

Let’s not forget Grindlinger down the road – although I’m hoping he’s a position player.

That’s the current org SP depth chart. I initially had RJ in AAA but he’s been in the majors most of the year
