LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Whew!

Trying to recap this last week without turning this column into War and Peace might be difficult. Brevity has never been my thing, but let’s try to recap.

Ultimately, the story of the week was the Angels kickstarting an organizational rebuild in many ways.

John Mozeliak started the bloodletting by cutting Alek Manoah then followed by trading Chase Silseth and Logan O’Hoppe to the Rangers for a 19 year old who was on nobody’s radar. Honestly I thought trading Silseth on his own would net a better return, Mo runs the show.

There were three Perry pieces off the roster.

Then came Monday and not quite all hell broke loose but a decent chunk of it did. John Henry did a good job updating a thread that ended up well north of 500 comments.

Jose Soriano was shipped to the Blue Jays and the Angels landed who I consider to be their new top prospect. Landing a kid as young as Nimmala with that type of bat speed and potential power is really sweet. I’ll dream on this kid for a while.

Then, the trade I called last month went down with Cleveland: Jo Adell for catcher Jacob Cozart. Combined with the O’Hoppe trade it proves that Mo values defense behind the plate.

But wait, there was more. In the one trade the Angels absolutely nailed at the deadline, Mo flipped hot starter Ryan Zeferjahn to the Cubs for catcher/designated hitter Moise Ballesteros.

If you were looking at the preseason prospect rankings, the Angels added two 50 FV prospects from the upper half of those lists on Monday. That is how a rebuild begins.

But wait, there’s more! Brent Suter was flipped for a former top prospect who has not yet panned out. Nacho Alvarez Jr. has a solid hit tool and could be a utility player. Or not, but he only cost Brent Suter. And Kirby Yates was traded for a pitcher.

All that activity was followed by a day the CtPG faithful have longed for: Jorge Soler was DFA’d among a flurry of moves. That cut, following the trades, signaled a new direction for the Angels.

To recap this last week or so:

Out: Alek Manoah, Chase Silseth, Logan O’Hoppe, Jose Soriano, Ryan Zeferjahn, Jo Adell, Brent Suter, Kirby Yates.

In: Arjun Nimmala, Moises Ballesteros, Jacob Cozart, Eddie Micheletti Jr., Nacho Alvarez Jr., Mason McGwire, Angel Rivero, Angel Arredondo, and Kyle Robinson.

That much of a roster teardown should provide opportunities for some young players. I think three guys are clearly on the Angels radar and should be up soon.

But, with a lockout looming do we want to add them to the active roster?

All that new talent follows the talent picked up in the draft, and the new guys are getting off to notable starts.

Also down on the farm, third baseman Jake Munroe has a 24 game on base streak going as I type this. If I jinx it, sorry Jake.

Expect to see a lot more minor league coverage. If that is what the Angels are prioritizing, then that is what Angels fans should prioritize.

From around baseball:

The Dodgers are scuffling and I love it. Just need them to slump for one playoff series this October to make me happy.

Some times things don’t work out according to plan. Like Casey Mize getting shelled in his Padres debut.

But at least the Dodgers lost Skubal’s debut as well.

FanGraphs rates every prospect traded at the deadline. The Angels did pretty well considering Ballesteros lost his prospect status.

I would have loved to get the prospect return from Boston that Baltimore received for Adley Rutschman.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I am not working this weekend so lots of miles on the bike and beach time with the boy are in store. I will get a credential for Monday and get a feel for the post trade deadline vibe. The three nicest guys to me have been Detmers, Adell, and O’Hoppe and two are gone now. But I will check the pulse of the more plugged in writers and the staffers I know and see if I find out anything interesting.

The change in the line-up was refreshing as Neto was never a decent #1-hole hitter. We are limited in choices for lead off, but even Meck or Trout or Siri are better choices the Neto. Neto is a good 3-4-5 hole hitter with his power. It was good to see the line-up change.

The biggest problem we have left is Suzuki, but we’ll just have to wait. He doesn’t seem to be in synch with the direction of the club under Moz unless after Monday he was given some new direction.

With an eye on next season’s draft and possible lock out Suzuki is not going anywhere soon.

I’ve been very hard on Arte and Perry – but I have to commend them for not pulling the trigger on this one. This would have been awful and would have set us back years. Well done guys. Brilliant for sure.

Of course – apparently they were going to do it. Right?

Soler was never a good idea, PTP loved helping out his friends in Atlanta is all and now both are gone. 😀 We may just end up next June drafting in the first to third position and help ourselves out by a lot more. The roster rebuild will be interesting to watch for the next two years, but with nowhere but up to go, anybody is a possible addition. Let’s go Angels!

Eh. You’re wrong. At the time he traded a pitcher who never really got it together for a hitter with limitations who generally provided power. And the Angels had been REALLY low on power. Was I in love with the trade? Nope. But it’s not like it was mind boggling. It was actually a pretty nothing burger trade… supplemental parts for supplemental parts.

Trading Canning for Soler was never the soul crushing death blow honks have acted like it is. It was one more turd in a bowl full of turds. Honestly, if we could have NOT spent the better part of ten years trying to make Trout happy, then trying to make Ohtani happy, and snuffing the entire rest of the org to do it I’d gladly suffer a Canning for Soler trade or two.

That nothingburger cost many millions of dollars.

The biggest resentment I have towards the angels the last 20 years is the pooholes signing. The bad luck of their future star kendrys getting injured like that ruined their window they had open.

The trade was not the problem. Playing him everyday after it was obvious he no longer had it was. We can thank Suzuki for that.

I’m hardly wrong other than in your opinion, the trade never made sense as at the time we had Trout, Neto, Adell, and O’Hoppe with power and possible Schanuel developing. He was always a DH and a liability in the field. Braves traded him cheap because he was ageing and his power dwindling and they were lucky the PTP was there to bail them out while taking on a once promising pitcher. Eh, I’m not wrong as you imply, but objective in how the addition was more of a sutraction.

How can someone’s opinions be wrong? Except yours, I guess.

The only time I’ve called Grandpa out is when he rooted for the Doyers. I still have not forgiven him.

My first comment is on adding young guys to the roster. I am only familiar with only the Rangers, Astros and Orioles. Screwing a 22-23 year old out of 1 year of service time might look like a smart move. But look at Springer, Correa, Bregman, Kyle Tucker, etc. Or Rutschman and the slumping Gunnar and even GRod. You have told them money is more important than winning or you. And I would argue that it sends a bad message throughout the clubhouse. (Every case is different, but to blame Boras because owners cut off their nose to spite their face is counter intuitive.)

Agree on the Rutschman return, Jeff – Boston sent a lot there. Would have certainly considered exchanging Detmers for that haul. Eyanson and Azocar is already a lot, but then they threw in a developmental arm like Witherspoon as well.

I also thought the return on the Brewers trade for May/Romero was nuts. Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale – I bet the Angels could have pulled off a similar trade with Detmers in it, and the Brewers sending back a third power hitter in a package.

Yeah…. the Brewers are odd ducks. It seemed like they traded some pretty hefty prospects and got a loaf of bread back. Of course, after ten days of being in a Brewers uniform we will now watch Dustin May become Ultra-Dustin and have a 0.78 ERA.

Here’s last night’s Cozart home run. A really nice pickup at the deadline.

I like that swing plane.

On an otherwise lackluster night on the farm, the new recruits Arjun Nimmala and Jacob Cozart had great nights at the plate with the Pandas. Nimmala was on base four times, with two doubles, two walks and a stolen base. Cozart was on twice with a HR and a walk.

Nimmala has a nice simple swing. You can see the power coming – he’s only 20. Both doubles were 107-108 mph EV.

I had hopes for him but still. I’m trying to be patient and not jump the gun on deciding Munroe is actually a solid 3B prospect. But he is looking much better than even I expected. Maybe sometime next year we see if he can do it in the MLB…. maybe after the strike, etc.

Watching the game on AB TV (formerly BSW) last night, I was looking forward to reading your thoughts on the new players today. To my admittedly “only made it as far as Little League” eyes, both Cozart and Arjun looked pretty good. Arjun appeared to be safe at home, but I guess there’s no replay review in MiLB.

The Trash Pandas game on Saturday is supposed to be on AB TV as well, and during last night’s broadcast they said Bremner is expected to get the start on the mound.

Looks like they are listening to you Jeff. 😂 Nice call on the Adell trade. Now – can you propose we trade owners?

Great write up Jeff.

I give the new management of the Halos an A, for several reasons:

The trades. The infusion of new young talent is impressive. Desperately needed.

No disrespect to Adell, Soriano and Zef, but they won’t be missed. Though I wish them well with their new teams.

The Draft: A huge breath of fresh air. Even the baseball analyst “experts” have given the Halos high marks for the draft and most of the trades. When was the last time that happened?

Trimming the Deadwood: Releasing Soler, Manoah and others. Lowe probably soon. Way past time to do it.

Getting Neto out of lead off spot. So blatantly obvious he was positioned there badly, also way overdue.

More housekeeping to do, such as new manager need; Trouts role in the future etc.

But with what’s happened the past month and the huge trimming of payroll, there may be light at end of tunnel, and it’s not an oncoming train.

THIS is one of my favorite things that, mid-suck, doesn’t feel great but it is. WHEN the farm system manages to produce even an average line up and a portion of solid pitching THEN the Angels have pretty cleared out books. Heck, Trout’s contract will even be close to the end. There is no more “We have six more years of paying (fill in name) 30+ million” to worry about.

The team knows they can draw 3 million fans with a meh team. Money isn’t as free as when we had the big TV deal, but we can run a pretty large payroll. So we will have the financial juice to actually make additions when they will count…. or extend beloved home grown players.

I just hope the Angels don’t get splash happy and return to carrying three 35 million a year players at a time.

Me too, no more buying shiny toys on the spot market on multi year deals for tens of millions of dollars.

I would not have a problem with that if they were good and productive. We just need to make better choices when and if we do.
