LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Prospects are like a mystery box

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

The Angels lost again. Shocker. Thanks to untimely hitting. Daring today, aren’t we? And the bullpen gave up a late home run. Expect more of that this season.

Soler was DFA-ed. Watch him go back to the Braves and be good again.

Will Kikuchi pitch again? Yes. For the Bees. As for the MLB club, maybe?

The Angels currently have the worst team in Baseball, but not the least amount of FWAR. Given that most of the players traded were pitchers, that number may be more even now.

Now that the dust has settled, what does Fangraphs think of the Angels farm system? 18th. 2nd best in the AL West. Optimism!

Around Baseball

After all the hype, the Dodgers managed to lose yesterday with Skubal pitching. Are we sure he is on the Dodgers and not the Angels? Just kidding, I WISH the Angels had Skubal. Actually, I wanted Skubal back in 2020, I even have the trade calculator screenshot to prove it. See?

What could have been…

Meanwhile the Tigers are being historic. On Offense. For the first time in 99 years, they have scored 8 runs in a game for at least 6 games. Skubal could have used that run support on the Dodgers.

Reminder that the Field of Dreams game is back August 13th! And the field looks as dreamy as ever.

What batter is best in each inning? Looks like mostly NL guys.

So Olson for the 9th, Freeman for the 6th…

James Wood to the IL for an oblique. He is the MLB leader in runs scored, but is so far ahead he is likely to still be it when he comes back.

On a personal note, I am an expert on “prosects.” While a kid, my first two that I saw who were future MLB All Stars on their way to the Hall of Fame were Jim Greengrass and Carl Spooner.

Yes, both made it to the majors and both flamed out in their 20s. Since those two “mistakes” I guess maybe 1000 “can’t miss” – have missed. So I totally agree with this post headline.

Also much later I watched “prospect” David Clyde’s first game for the Rangers. In the bullpen, warming up, before the game, pitching coach Chuck Estrada was changing his pitching mechanics. I knew that day Clyde was on the wrong organization.

A couple debuts from 2026 draftees Gavin Grahovac and Jaxon Willits last night at Rancho, with inaugural long flies from each. Welcome to pro ball, lads!

…..but if Skubal had been traded to the Angels back then, he would still be languishing in the minors or coaching in high school
