Angels lose Series Finale vs Cards

What MONTH is it? The last time the Angels won 3 in a row was early June, when they won 4 in a row. And the last time they SWEPT a team was in late May vs the Rangers. Yes, the Angels aren’t good, but if you look at the metrics, they are a bottom 10 team, not a bottom 5 team, and yet the Angels were the last team to win 40 games this season. Maybe luck is on the Angels side, just as the trade deadline nears so that the FO can get screwed over.

Yeah, that tracks. We have seen this happen before, most recently when the Angels caught fire in late July and then traded for Lucas Giolito and Rey-Lo in 2023. They proceeded to suck IMMEDITALY AFTEER THIS. Maybe if the Angels do win 10 in a row, the new GM is smart enough to SELL and not BUY at the deadline.

One of those rumored to be on the trade block is Reid Detmers. He went 5 and 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2. In line for the loss, he really was screwed over by bad hitting yet again.

Could be 2nd to last Angels game for Detmers

Highlighted Recap

It was a pitching duel, so it was all defense and pitching for the first 5 innings. Like this one from Oswald in the first.

Smothered it

And this one by Nolan in the 4th.

Big man on the ground

St. Louis also did the defense, like this railing catch in the 4th.

Dang it

GIDP happened by both teams, what was better? Grissom?

Could have maybe gotten the GITP

Or Burleson?

What could have happened last time

Sadly, someone had to score, and it was the cards on a solo shot in the 6th.

1-0 Cards

Angels out hit the Cards, but were un-clutch. It was yet another showcasing of a team that scores 2 runs or less needing the pitching to be perfect to win. Angels lose, snapping their fledgling win streak and are now 41-62 with the trade deadline looming.

Upcoming

No game tomorrow, at the Giants for the weekend.

Second game in a row with a nifty play from Grissom. He’s a baller, we should keep him around.

The Angels actually have several serviceable third basemen right now. Nobody that I would say is currently a superstar, but steady at the very least.

Maybe not. His DRS at the hot corner is not great.

Bad defender, above average contact hitter. I like him

Jo Adell had a 3-0 count in the 9th inning with bases loaded in a tie game, and got hit by a pitch. Thus a walk off win in the first game of series.
It’s the first time the entire history of mlb that a player got a walk off win by getting hit by a pitch in the 9th inning on a 3-0 count.

The Angels got 5 runs in first inning of second game of series and then were shut out the next 17 innings, including today’s game.

Angel pitchers gave up only 4 earned runs in the series.

So what I hear you saying is that Suzuki is a genius.

How GMs construct their roster is so interesting. Please note the ages of the turnabout White Sox and the ages of the AAA Salt Lake Bees.

Never realized Salt Lake City was such a popular seniors-only community.

The Cardinals have the youngest team in mlb. And one of the best farm systems.
The Angels have one of the oldest teams in mlb and one of the worst farm systems.
A tale of two franchises.

Agree and Reid was solid indeed. Also, Adell sparked up a little yesterday as a bonus which might lead some GM into thinking a change if scenery could be just what Jo needs. Plus, don’t want the Angels to pull a Red Sox and get a run of wins thus prompting hesitation about making trades.

41-62
9 games left before the TDL – @ SF, vs. HOU, vs. MIL
2 Soriano starts (SF, MIL) and 1 Detmers start (HOU)

I think Team Sell It All is in really really good shape. The last and most important hurdle to climb over is Mo and Molly convincing Arte.

No pinch hitters available to replace Lowe in the 9th? Perhaps the batboy?

The past couple weeks at least I’d rather see the pinch hitter for Peraza. Guy is having horrible abs mostly.

plus I still am unsure as to why it’s so hard for Kurt not to just pencil Denzer in at 3B every game.

If he isn’t going to play every day, he needs to be sent back to AAA.

But he should be playing every day in the majors. He’s ready.

I would like to see Paris called up sooner than later. He’s been playing well in AAA and earned another look. Could go CMo too, either way one of them needs to start at 2nd

He’s hitting .143 for the month of July. He’s closing in on 100 k’s this season. Neto went over 100 weeks ago, Soler has over 100, and Adell, Trout and Peraza are closing in, in the next week or so will probably join the century club also. The Angels, as a team, should eclipse 1,000 for the season.

MLB.com shows Angels leading the league with 977. Pirates are second with 973. Tampa leads with only 715.
