Bad news Angels get Swept in Ohio

Morning Baseball is what the Angels deserve after all these years of failure. Not the fans, no, we deserve better. Frankly, with how much abuse ownership has given the fans, our demands should be pretty lengthy. I know mine are.

At least there are certain players we can root for, in a Sisyphus way. Like Detmers. A starter turned RP back to being a starter again, he has been pretty decent this season. Not what we expected way back when he was drafted, but it is the small, moral victories that we have to settle for. He went 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned, really should be 2 earned) on 6 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2. Left in too long/blame the defense, what could you do, the Bullpen wasn’t gonna be much better.

6k

Not that the offense really helped. Yeah, Neto had a great day at the plate, but the team as a whole scored only 2 runs. You won’t win many games scoring only 2 runs. In fact, they scored exactly 2 runs each of the 3 games in Ohio. Huh…

Highlighted Recap

Welp, the Angels were in a hole early with a leadoff home run by the not Spiders.

0-1 Angels

And a sac fly as well

0-2 Angels

Well, the team in Ohio scored again in the 3rd, making it a 3 run deficit in a very stupidly bad Angels way that you have to see.

Bruh

But then, the Angels were able to score 2 in the 5th thanks to Neto.

Neato

In the 6th Neto botched a ball and bloop hits led to another run allowed and it was 4-2 Cleveland.

Detmers deserves better

Ugh, the reason why I am REALLY mad they are not the Spiders is because Spiders are so cool. Like, they are red and blue anyway, think of all the Spider-Man tie ins! But nooOooo… they went with Guardians, which is a stupid word that I have trouble spelling, just like Cleveland.

Anyway, Angels tried, but failed, and lost, getting swept and such.

Upcoming

Angels have the day off tomorrow, and will then host the Dodgers this weekend. The Dodgers have just lost 4 in a row by 4 or more runs, *not counting today. So watch as the Angels fix them.

Good to see Minasian passed on Ethan with the second pick. We’ve obviously got no use for talented position players. Always better to drop to someone who would’ve gone 15 picks later.

“The Rockies’ renaissance is perhaps muted if you’re looking only at the major league standings, but its impact is felt throughout the system. First-round pick SS Ethan Holliday (19, A) is pushing for a quick promotion to High-A, blasting five home runs in his last 16 games while slashing .319/.450/.787.

Well, over roughly the same period, Minasian’s 4th rounder, 3B Jake Munroe is hitting .348/.531/.826 at a tougher level, in pitchers’ parks – so there’s that.

A wRC+ of 167 in the Northwest League is quite a bit better than a wRC+ of 134 in the pinball parks of the Cal League.

Holliday has had a nice two weeks after a brutally cold stretch, but he’s still batting .258 and striking out 28%+ of the time in hitter’s heaven – basically the PCL of low-A ball.

Meanwhile, Bremner, with his 1.50 ERA and 14 K/9, is probably a month away from AA, once he gets over the virus that seems to be going around the Angels farm.

I don’t fault Minasian & McIlvaine for passing on Holliday. Their draft class is actually exceeding expectations at the moment.

I fault them for passing on obvious frontline pitchers like Anderson and Hernandez in Round One and BPAs like Eyanson or Devin Taylor in Round Two – but in the context of their overall 2025 portfolio, it’s a more compelling group than any of their other draft years to date. Good returns from Bremner, Munroe, Slawinski and Snead thus far, and interesting fliers with Gray, Haley and Mitchell on the horizon.

As much as it pains me to admit – I thought the other day they may have finally hit on a draft class. Time will tell – but it has the potential to be decent. Of course – if we went back since his beginning – have to give him a D. Even the year before – right after Moore – Pirates snag Konnor Griffin. Moore could still figure it out – but it’s not looking too good.

Yeah – I am by no means trying to redeem all of Minasian’s drafts – he’s had some simply terrible ones.

I’m just saying that Holliday was no sure thing – he’s fallen down rankings considerably. A two week hot streak in a high-offense environment won’t eliminate all doubt – he has a lot of development ahead of him. And there several other guys his age in the Cal League – Jhonny Level, Emil Morales, Roldy Brito, Kayson Cunningham – arguably outhitting him right now.

It’s way too early to say if he’ll provide more value than Bremner in the near term or long term.

I’m really starting to look at k’s and swing and miss. I really want to see the game shift to more of the Steven Kwan’s and Arias’s. That .240 is now serviceable, I can’t stand it. Trout is going to have a hard time getting to .300 again unless he gets legitimate protection. But I expect his OBP will stay strong as walks don’t hurt you if you can’t drive them in.

Top of the order: Grissom, Trout, Adell, Soler were 0-14. Not likely to win many games that way.

I had a buddy – a huge Raiders fan. Until playoff time, he always bet against the Raiders on the money line. Basically he said he won every week. Either the Raiders won or he won his bet. That’s kind of how I feel after each game. We don’t win? Good – we’ll have better picks next year and will be more likely to finally sell before the deadline. They win one every three or four games- I’ll enjoy those too.

Winning or losing no longer matters, it’s all about if the young guys who will be here for 2 or 3 years are improving.

The game was “competitive” and the Halos played above their team talent level. Detmers was adequate and would have picked up a win….if he played on a team with a better offense and defense. The bullpen held, which was a highlight.

Perry’s guy Moncada made yet another error on a ridiculously easy play. Of course Perry continues to insist to Suzuki that he play cause, you know, he as the GM doesn’t want to look bad….. Just like benching Lowe would make him look bad.

Here’s a little hint Perry : If the TEAM wins you look good ! So suck it up, let your pride go and do the right thing; DFA Moncada and bring up Guzman. DFA Lowe and bring up Rada.

And while you are at it you can DFA that piece of garbage Pomeranz.

As bad as Moncada is, Lowe is the real anchor on this team.

And playing the elite center fielder Teodosio in left field is asinine.

But what about Trout’s ego bruh, he wants his kids to see him as a CF circa ‘12-‘19 (even a shortened ‘22 if you want to include it)!!

Once again though, the pitching was good enough to win. I am one of the skeptics, but I am becoming more optimistic about the future. We may have pretty decent starting pitching in 2027 and for sure in 2028, And maybe even a decent bullpen. Guzman looks like our future shortstop and we can move Neto to 3B or trade him. Peraza looks like our future 2B and Grissom can either be a bench player or possibly part of a LF Platoon. We will need a catcher, a 1B, a RF, and either a CF or a DH depending on Trout. We’ll need to add 2-3 bats. Need to see what we do with CMo to. We may have to trade some players we don’t want to, like Schanuel, Soriano, Kikuchi, and Adell. And I don’t trust the current leaders to do this, but there is a path that could be executed if it’s handled correctly.

I like a lot of the young players too. Do we have enough of them? Not yet.

Very easily could see a Soriano, Detmers, Bremner, Urena pitching core in 2028. That could be a deadly and cost effective rotation.

Until then, though, this team will continue to suck.

I don’t think so…

Soriano is very good…
Urena has possibilities (can he pitch over 100 innings? unknown)
Detmers…. below average..command comes and goes
Kochanowicz … same as Detmers

There is no depth to speak of either…meaning we end up with undecided pitching once a week…and also out second baseman pitches a lot 🙂

The pitching overall is bottom 5 in the league… starters are lower middle.

I am surprised the hitting stats are top half of the league…the hitters act like they’ve never seen a slider …no plate discipline…lots of k’s

The light at the end of the tunnel…is an oncoming train ..choo choo.

and you have MAGAsuzuki in the dugout top it off…can we do any worse on challenges.?

a complete mess… and GM/PM is not getting away unscathed 🙁

Detmers…. below average..command comes and goes”

This actually isn’t true. Location+ is probably our best measurement of command at present, and Reid’s Location+ is 109 – he’s 9% better than the average MLB pitcher.

Both his stuff and command (location) is above league averages. His overall Pitching+ is 11% better than MLB average.

Whether we look at xERA based on batted ball data, Stuff+, true talent metrics like FIP, or PitchingBot metrics – all the systems agree: Detmers should be about a run lower in ERA than he is currently.

That’s usually down to bad luck and bad defense…and we know the Angels have plenty of the latter.

If it would take 88 wins, for example, to make the playoffs this season, the Angels would have to go 72-46 the remainder of season. That is never going to happen, thus, any thoughts, foolish or otherwise, of making playoffs are effectively over.
To reach .500 for season, they would have to go 65-53. Highly unlikely.

I would like to replace Jim Mora’s Colts “playoffs” rant with our very own… .500?!? You’re talking about .500?!?

Mike Trout, a tale of two seasons, this season:

His 2026 season hitting total:
43 games played
At bats: 153
Hits: 38
HR’s: 11
RBI’S: 23
Batting average: .249

However, a closer look indicates the following:

In 7 of the 43 games he has played, those games being the first 3 games of season in Houston and the 4 game series at Yankee Stadium. In those 7 games his numbers are the following:

At bats: 25
Hits: 11
HR’s: 8
RBI’S: 15
Batting average: .440

Other than those 7 games, in the other 36 games played, his Stats are:

At bats: 128
Hits: 27
HR’S: 3
RBI’S: 8
Batting Average: .210

Yes, I selected 7 games where he was phenomenal, however this shows a considerable amount of inconsistency. However, in the 36 games outside of the 7 selected, with those 36 of 43 representing 83.7% of his games played, he has had a terrible season at bat.
Not factored in was base on balls and runs scored or 33%k total.

His OBP has been very good, but a Mike Trout walking a great deal is not significant addition to the line up. The lack of overall production in the majority of games is one, but certainly far from the only reason the Angels have an inept offense. The 3 home runs and 8 rbi’s over a span of 36 games has been very bad. Those numbers extrapolate over 162 games to 13 Home runs and 38 rbi’s, with a 33% k rate.

I’ve been saying this since may 4th. I’ve also written about the last 3 seasons and attending games (somewhere around 30 of them even including this short season) and he’s done nothing if he’s even been available. ‘24 season has to be the last time I remember the crowd even trying to chant MVP MVP during his important AB, he didn’t come through. Much like his only playoff appearance and striking out to end the WBC.

He’s also not challenging “easier” pitches lately. In memory there’s been a few pitches that went against him in the 8th inning or so that if he had challenged, could have changed the trajectory of the game. For someone who’s always been known with a “good eye”, it’s rather peculiar.

Which tells me he isn’t currently seeing the ball well and has contributed to his recent slump.

Again, this team is in a swoon not because they stopped hitting, but because they stopped walking. By end of April, they walked a total of 135 times!!! 36 times in 6 games in March and 90 walks in April. We’re in mid-May and they’ve only walked 30 times. They either stopped being patient or are not tracking the ball well, or both. There’s just not enough traffic on the bases and wear and tear on the pitchers for this offense to really do damage.

No point in getting mad about L’s anymore. They are who we thought they are.
