Who should the Angels draft at 12th?

The draft takes place July 11-13th in Philadelphia

Here are three players that the Angels should draft if they are available.

Vahn Lackey – CA Georgia Tech

Vahn Lackey has been dominating this year. Lackey already has 9 home runs beating his total from last year (6). He’s batting 459/583/932 with a 1.516 OPS.

Angels should target him as one of their prospects. He definitely has all-star potential as a pro

Sawyer Strosnider – OF Texas Christian (TCU)

Sawyer Strosnider has been a having great start to his season. He has 6 home runs already and batting 333/500/712 with a 1.212 OPS, with 7 stolen bases already. Could have potential to be a 5 tool player

Ace Reese – 3B Mississippi State

Ace Reese is an underrated hitting prospect coming into this draft. He is ranked 18th best draft prospect. Last year Ace hit 21 home runs while batting 352/422/718 with a 1.140 OPS.

Right now, Reece has 6 home runs and batting 370 with a 1.181, with 11 doubles. This could instantly solve the Angels problem at third base. Lefty bat with a solid glove at third. If I were the Angels, I would still keep in an eye on him during the season.

A few bats that intrigue me and might be available when the Angels select at #12:

Blake Bowen – OC kid from JSerra HS. Major athlete with plus-plus power, great run times and a chance to stick in CF. It’s been a while since the Angels have gone prep bat in the first round, but this kid seems like a good fit.

AJ Gracia – Virginia LHB with an excellent batting eye that limits the swing and miss. Plays in a tougher conference than Strosnider, with a bit more projection, and potentially more ability to reach his 60 grade game power.

Caden Sorrell – Jace LaViolette’s former teammate, showing a dynamic speed/power combination, lefty centerfielder. Some in-zone contact issues might be a red flag, but he’s show consistent power for a contending team in college’s toughest conference.

No player in the draft has more helium than Lackey right now. I suspect he’s a top ten selection and off the board well before the Angels draft.

Reese struggles quite a bit defensively at the hot corner – I think he eventually slides over to 1B, which is where Team USA played him, or maybe he ends up a fringey LF.

Strosnider is an interesting follow, though I do worry a bit that his competition in the B12 is lesser than the other power conferences, and Texas Christian isn’t strong enough this season to permit us to see him against more elite pitching.

Can’t be any of the above. There must be a potential relief pitcher available.
