Rendon Bought out by Angels

It finally happened. Anthony Rendon will no longer play for the Angels. They bought him out, pay him to literally F off.

His 38 MILLION DOLLARS will be paid out over the next 3-5 years. So no Bobby Bonillo situation, but he can now stay at home and stop not answering questions about when he will return.

In his 7 year deal signed just before the 2020 season, he has played in just 257 games and while not bad when healthy, has spent more time on the IL than on the filed.

The Rendon Theft tracker is a site that exists and you can see for yourself how bad the deal was.

He will not be missed.

I still liked Rendon more than Rengifo.

Buckle up Michael Nelson Trout, the Eye Of Sauron of “fan” enmity will now focus on you and your agreed upon contract.

Same as it would if he was a Yankee, Cub or Red Sox. Same as it would be if he played football or basketball. Accept historic contract, accept heightened expectations.

Although the pain will be real, Trout’s contract is palatable. He earned it. His body didn’t live up to it but every one of us would have given to him to keep him here. Rendone is good riddance of a nightmare. I’d never say he faked an injury but he sure as shit milked the hell out of them.

I dunno, I honestly think that Rendon’s body broke down more drastically than Trout’s and there was nothing that Rendon could do to meliorate the public reaction.

Apros pos of nothing but, I’d probably rather jam a few beers/shots with Rendon over many other cats. Dude was down to throw hands for “his”. Anyway, call me strange, call me whatever.

Go Trout!

Wish him the best. Hope they don’t play him in CF this season. He should remain DH 75% of the time. Suzuki is smarter than Washington.

And if Ren-finally-done had any reasonable set of ethics and morals, he would donate the money to charity.

If I remember correctly, this was Arte’s deal. Do us a favor, sit down and SHUT UP, Arte! This just might be the beginning of the team sale. Please, please, please!

No idea what the interest paid on the money will be, but Bonilla’s was based on prime when he did his. So let’s use that and plug it into a mortgage calculator.

Loan amount: $38 million
Rate: 6.75%

Paid over 5 years = $747,971.51 per month or $8,975,658.06 per year.
Paid over 4 years = $905,556.26 per month or $10,866,675.10 per year.
Paid over 3 years = $1,168,991.01 per month or $14,027,982.10 per year.

In theory this creates $24 million to $29 million in wiggle room for Arte. However, with his insurance rates about to skyrocket and his TV money dwindling, it would be foolish to expect an immediate reallocation towards payroll.

If in fact the 5 year plan is the case, the Kirby Yates signing has absorbed the windfall for year one.

IMHO it should’ve been halved (Interest involved) this year and next. Bad money always needs to be off books as soon as possible.

Arte isn’t going to sign any top tier FAs for 2026 or even 2027, more than likely he’ll get just overbid for that Japanese 3B and that is the closest we’ll get to any Big Splash.

I’ll be willing to bet we’ll probably wish Yates had a contingency second year on that contract.

You are presuming there will be baseball in 2027 which is unlikely.

Yeah, I’m a rip the band aid off type guy myself. If we were a Wild Card team needing an extra little bit to stay in the hunt, maybe I’d change my tune.

Really, this year should be about clearing Rendon and Stephenson off the books and acquiring as many upside guys as possible.

Thus far the opposite has taken place.

Riding out the bad contracts was my preference too, but with this development my mind is open to new possibilities.

Perry has money to spend, so time for him to get creative and make lemonade out of the lemons he has. Above anything else, we need to fill 3rd — Okamoto or Suarez make sense. Go get another starter and outfielder.

But part of the buyout was Rendon not having to report and being relieved of that responsibility. Clearly – there’s new language beyond the payout letting Rendon drift off into the sunset. I think the interest rate should be much smaller. Since the rumor was this had stalled, I’m guessing this got done when they said – “See you in Arizona.”

I am just having fun at work (remember, I’m a loan officer/realtor).

Even if I change the interest rate up or down a point or two the calculations don’t change dramatically. The loan terms are so short.

I’m just having fun too Jeff. I have no idea what it will be. I just suspect they had to play some cards too. He has Boras – so you know he was asking for a ton. I have a friend whose son was represented by Boras a while ago. Team wanted to lock him up early – while he was still in the minors. We’re talking generational wealth. Boras said you should wait – you’ll get $100 million more. Injured. Got a few years of league minimum and a year or two of arb. Done. Now, as a fan, I’m not a fan of these big guarantees at all. But he got some bad advice. Terrible.

Now we (Momentarily) have the delusion that these “Savings” will be applied to actual valuable free agent talent for the team.

That would require free agents who want to play in Anaheim. The organization has the reputation of the bubonic plague.

This is crushing news. He won’t win Comeback Player of the Year like I figured he would. It was almost automatic. A lock.
