LA Angels Wednesday news Crash: Taylor Ward is GOOOOOONE

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

So, Taylor Ward was traded for Grayson Rodriguez. O’s get a bat and decent glove, Angels get a pre arb SP with an injury history.

The Angels protect 1 player from the rule 5 draft, Albert Ureña. an amateur out of the DR.

Around Baseball

Deadline time for the Qualifying Offer to be accepted. Usually almost no one accepts, but this time, plenty do. 9 reject it, but 4 accept. Shota Imanaga, Brandon Woodruff, Gloeyber Torres, and Trent Grisham will NOT be Free Agents. However, Tucker, Shcwarber, Bichette, Valdez, Cease, Ranger Suarez, Edwin Diaz, Gallen, and King will be. Their QO attached means the Angels will lose their 2nd round pick if they sign them.

We have a Japanese posting. Tatsuya Imai of the Saitama Seibu Lions. A pitcher. We need one of those…

Rays and White Sox traded with each other. Steven Wilson and Yoendrys Gomez to TB for Everson Pereira and Tanner Murray.

White Sox are not done, as the Red Sox traded them Chris Murphy for Ronny Hernandez. A young catcher the White Sox do not need as they took the Angels’ in an earlier trade 2 years ago.

Red Sox get Tristan Gray for the Rays for Luis Guerrero. Inter division trade?

Twins traded for RP Eric Orze for a pitching prospect. I would never trade with the Rays, personally.

I like the trade. Ward had his best season but wasn’t going to be a core guy to build around and would have commanded too much money. Ward seems to be a guy that was well liked but his tendency to have prolonged slumps, limited range and a really poor arm wasn’t likely to push this team to more wins.

Rodriguez is a wild card but why not make a risky bet now? It’s not as if this team is one player away from anything resembling relevance.

Exactly. When you exist in the cellar it’s the time to take some risks.

Thank you, Perry. Not an easy decision but a bold move. We need more of those. This sets up some interesting possibilities for the remainder of the off-season. Please remain aggressive.

Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez offered too tantalizing of a package for Perry Minasian to turn down, despite the risk.

A day after the Angels acquired a pitcher who has been hurt for nearly a season and a half, Minasian said the current reports of his Rodriguez’s and the potential he offers were sufficient to be worth sending the Baltimore Orioles one of their best power hitters, Taylor Ward.

“Is there risk? Yes, there’s risk,” the Angels’ general manager said Wednesday. “It’s eyes wide open on the risk. That being said, it’s four years of control. It’s somebody that, when he pitches, can beat anybody on any given night. The weapons he has and the ability to throw strikes, it’s a combination that some of the best in the game have. We’ve got high expectations. He’s somebody we’re really excited to have.”

Rodriguez, 26, is a former first-round pick with a 100-mph fastball. He had a 3.25 ERA over a 31-start stretch from July 2023 to July 2024. He struck out 193 and walked 53 over 182⅔ innings in that span. His walk rate is slightly better than the major-league average.

However, he hasn’t thrown a pitch in a regular season game since July 31, 2024.

Rodriguez suffered a lat strain that cost him the last two months of the 2024 season, and he missed all of 2025 with a similar strain and then elbow problems. He had surgery to have a bone spur removed in August.

“We need him to be healthy,” Minasian said. “We like where he’s at. Obviously, we felt like the medical (report) was in a good enough place to where this was a chance, a gamble worth taking. We expect him to be healthy in spring. He’s throwing bullpens in January. We’ve talked to him. He’s very motivated, very excited. Somebody that can really give us a jolt in the rotation.”

Rodriguez is scheduled to talk to the media Wednesday afternoon.

For now, any report of his health has to be taken with caution. No team would give up an established starting pitcher with four years of control for a hitter with one year of control under normal circumstances.

Mike Elias, the Orioles president of baseball operations, told the Baltimore media recently that Rodriguez was a “wild card.”

“There’s nothing going on right now that would hold him back,” Elias said. “He’s not injured right now and he’s preparing for spring training, but the poor guy’s missed a year and two months basically, and we’ve got to be mindful of that, and I think he’s a really nice wild card talent for us, and I’m really optimistic and bullish about it. But the fact that he’s missed so much time recently, we just have to be prudent about that.

“We don’t want to plan around him too heavily, but I really like where he’s at.”

If Rodriguez is healthy, he would join a rotation that includes right-hander José Soriano and left-handers Yusei Kikuchi and Reid Detmers. Soriano is 27 and Detmers and Rodriguez are 26.

The Angels control Detmers and Soriano for the next three years, and Rodriguez for the next four.

The Angels still need another starter, and to that end the deal helps by freeing up some money. Ward was set to make around $14 million in arbitration, and Rodriguez will make just over the major-league minimum of $780,000.

“The more flexibility, the better,” Minasian said. “That was discussed too. It’s not only acquiring somebody we feel like can impact the rotation, but freeing up some money to maybe get into areas where we wouldn’t have been able to before.”

The Angels will need to replace Ward’s production at the plate. Last season, he hit 36 homers and drove in 103 runs with a .792 OPS.

The Angels still have Mike Trout, Jo Adell and Jorge Soler to play the corner outfield spots. Trout and Soler likely can’t handle full-time outfield duty, so the Angels would probably look to have them split time in the outfield and at designated hitter. Adell could also play center, but perhaps now the Angels are more likely to get a true center field and keep Adell in one of the corners.

“It’s a long offseason,” Minasian said. “We’ll continue to look.”

They now are likely to acquire a true center fielder via free agency or trade, although they have Bryce Teodosio, Kyren Paris and No. 7 prospect Nelson Rada as internal options.

“It’s a long offseason, so we’ll continue to look,” Minasian said. “We have some depth in the outfield we feel good about. But we’re still going to look for players to improve, areas to improve, and the outfield might be a spot now where we might add somebody. It’s not only acquiring somebody we feel like can impact the rotation, but a freeing up money to maybe get into areas where we wouldn’t have been able to before.”

The Angels are still expected to add another starter via free agency or trade, and they are now in the market for a center fielder, third baseman and possibly even a second baseman. They’re interested in a left-handed bat and saw one come off the market on Tuesday, with left-handed-hitting center fielder Trent Grisham accepting the Yankees’ qualifying offer. Free agent Cedric Mullins could be a fit, while the A’s designated left-handed-hitting center fielder JJ Bleday on Tuesday.

First, and this is just my knobby brain musing, I think Elias was pretty damn shell shocked by just how BAD the Orioles were last year. Especially the pitching. Clearly it was gonna take a step back, but it was BAD. There are risks with Rodriguez, but I think they were greatly amplified for Elias.Especially if it’s true that Groot’s not injured and is just getting ready for Spring.

Second, is there ANYTHING that GM/POPP/POBO/VPOPD guys DON’T feel good about? You could literally shit on their desk and they’d tell a beat reporter about how warm it is and they feel good about that.

It’s funny. Rays fans live in a completely different world where they are stressing about all the prospect chaff they are trading away. When all you have is prospects and all you will ever have is prospects then prospects are what you worry about. And they make low grade trades so often that these fans wind up stressing cause they keep trading guys that they just traded for a year ago etc.

The fact that a team like the Doyers can just bight off huge chunks of the market to see if a guy will work out as a #3 starter while the Rays have to gulp down huge amounts of sea water and try to strain some food out of the mass of goop is one of the primary reasons we need a two year strike that gets us a salary floor and cap.

Sure, there are assholes like Poldad and Nutting. But I honestly think that teams like the Rays, Brewers, Reds, IndiGuards, D-Backs, Marlins, Tigers, Royals etc would actually invest more into MLB salary if it actually closed the gap with the bigger market teams. For example, if a salary floor exists I doubt the Tigers ever hit it and if a cap exists, along with increased revenue sharing, I bet Skubal gets a contract from them.

If they use the Ward salary space to sign an Okamoto , then they would have a better all around player with the possibility of Grayson Rodriguez for 4 years, that’s a swap you take alll day. Likewise, if Baltimore has another pitcher they’re signing, then they’re also having a productive RBI bat with someone they think will pitch more innings. It’s a trade where it could be win-win for both.

Ward was always frustrating with hot and cold streaks but over the year he was solid. On a contending team maybes he’s the 6th batter. They will miss his power production, so hopefully someone steps up. Looking at you O’Hoppe.

Yup. Unless he’s just washed I actually expect Soler to hit more home runs. O”Hoppe as well. I actually think Trout may be good for a few more too. He had some pretty wild power droughts this past year. That should make up for some of what’s missed with Ward gone.

Trout should get more HRs because he closed the season a bit interesting like maybe he found something…regarding Soler I don’t know if he plays much though if Trout is at DH. Soler was an Atlanta, Ron Washington guy… they might ship him out . I wonder if there’s a way to ship out Soler and Stephenson by eating half their contracts and using that for something . Can Soler do well in a reduced role?

Unless you Will Wilson them Who the hell would want to take on Soler’s or Stephenson’s salary? And with our barren farm system I’m not sure we even have mid level prospects to trade away .

Soler will be the same one dimensional K machine that has always been. If he hits more home runs it will be because of a combination of more plate appearances and mistakes by the opposing pitcher. I would trade him knowing I would have to eat a large chunk of his salary.

Good news is, (I believe) that the debridement surgery is one that most pitchers don’t have lingering issues afterwards. But I am about six years shy of a medical degree, though my handwriting readability qualifies as a doctor’s.

I think trading Adell still makes sense. We currently have 3 guys pegged for RF and none for CF plus we still need 3B, 2B, and pitching all around.

Trading Adell would ease one roster crunch while filling another position.

Or sign LH Max Kepler on a one year deal who loves the Big A and who’s defensive metrics in Left field are much better than Ward’s.

Or sign LH Nathaniel Lowe to a minor league deal and move Schanuel to the outside. Lowe’s atoner Big A lover which normally retards Left handed bats

Actually trading Noe Rameriz for Raisel Iglesias was Perry’s best move to date. The Jury is still out on this one but potentially it has the makings of either a Grand Slam signature move from Perry or his Swan Song of what could have been.

Call it ‘The trade that had to happen’, no way Angels could pass up young pitching prospect for Ward, even if it looks like damaged goods. I was hoping for a Singer trade with Reds but oh well. Watch Ward hit 50hr with Baltimore. Sound familiar, remember what Trumbo did for them after he was traded for our current legal problem ‘Skaggs’. I’m hoping for the best with Rodriguez but why do I feel trAdition lurking around.

I like the Ward trade given that Ward was gone after this season. Angels get a wildcard young controlled and talented pitcher with a history of injuries. What could go wrong 😉.

But the Angels got something of real actual value with a player that would never have been signed beyond ‘26. There is also possibly payroll flexibility as a result of this trade. The Angels save at least $12m in payroll in ‘26 by making this deal.

If Grayson returns anywhere close to his 2024 form, this is a complete steal.

Now – how to replace Ward’s power and production? That is going to require a significant bat being signed. We will see.

This trade also shows the limitations of the SIM. Had anyone proposed it before yesterday there would have been a chorus of voices shooting it down.

It’s not really a limitation of the SIM. Both the SIM, and reality, have been saying “this is a pretty lop sided trade”. Honestly I am afraid Rodriguez is a serial killer because I don’t see why Elias made this trade and neither does anyone else. So “expecting” this kind of trade, like saying before hand we should just go out and make a trade like this, doesn’t work in real life or in the SIM.

The SIM basically tells you that. Just like the people who would be shitting on your idea if you had proposed the trade. The SIM still does it’s job, and when you filter through all the trades that happen it’s accurate. But it doesn’t stop weird trades like this from happening once in a blue moon.

Those of us who’s fantasies involve ignoring the computer that basically just aggregates what POBOGMPOPPs actually do and applies it to possible trade scenarios are still screwed. The SIM is basically saying “don’t expect this trade to happen/don’t make this trade” but Elias did it anyway. It doesn’t mean the Reds are gonna trade me Sal Stewert for Mitch Ferris, unfortunately.

If something happens with a guy who has crazy negative value, like Trout, it will also likely be an outlier. Trout’s a negative 80 or something and I doubt anyone’s getting that value from us PLUS Trout in a trade even if we send them money.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

Also, fun fact, while we were sleeping, the SIM just adjusted how it values meh LFers with a little pop who cost 13M a year and will be FAs in a year. This trade is so lopsided it will likely mess with the SIMs valuations a little.

While I would love to replace a 30 HR bat with a 30 HR bat, this lineup has several holes.

I do wonder if Perry is thinking of Trout in LF. I wouldn’t risk his knees at this point in his career, but Perry just might.

It would be very “Anglesque” to see Trout recapture his swing similar to what he did the last week of the season and then see him break out a Kendrys Morales home plate stomp or Bobby Valentine through the wall type of injury. Call in the Shaman ala 2002 as the Big A must be on top of a sacred native burial ground

Eat Soler’s deal if needed but let Trout DH!

As I have noted, to trade your number four hitter who is a significant RBI guy, for an uncertain pitcher with a history of health issues is, basically, ridiculous. This is plainly a salary dump. They bought a lottery ticket with a quality every day player from the middle of the lineup. This trade was made by a team that struggled driving in runs, making contact with men on base, and scoring runs in general when it mattered.

To have a potent offense, they needed to keep a guy like Ward and add to him with upgrades primarily at 3B. As of today, they now have a worse offense and still have shaky pitching with little certainty.

I realize they will likely add a CF — although Grisham re-signed with the Yanks and he looked like the best option. For offense, they will be treading water just trying to get back to where they started now. Oh, and Stephenson, Joyce, etc. now have a new friend in the “we don’t know what to expect as to health from them” group.

1000% This was a totally non-Angel/non-Arte move. This is what moving veterans with a year or two before free agency can look like. Think about what they may have gotten for Ohtani!

“Rebuild” would be trading Neto and Soriano. But this is still a good trade, a gamble that addresses possibly the number one hardest thing to solve in baseball. How do you get a #1 starter if you don’t have any in your system and only one of them a year, if any, show up in free agency? Grod may be a burn out, he also may be a cheap (even his arb value will be depressed) ace that we can try to extend in a couple years if things look good. It’s a big leap forward as, even if we had all the other pieces in place and a ton of money to spend, it was gonna be hard to find a true #1 starter. It’s a gamble, but we may have nailed this issue.

Kevin, i like Taylor Ward, but you can’t ignore salary and team control aspects when looking at a trade. If this were one year for Taylor Ward for one year of Grayson at the same salary, then I’d agree. However, this is 1 year of Ward for about 14 million in exchange for a year of Grayson at league minimum followed by up to 3 years of Grayson at arb eligible

The Orioles are clearly playing for 2026, but the Angels aren’t. However, if the Angels reinvest the salary difference in a hitter, this could even improve them for 2026.

You have to take risks like this if you are gonna build a real roster. Otherwise you’re stuck with the same roster and hoping on a couple big splashes a year while you maintain a huge payroll. Grayson Rodriguez’s arm might very well be burnt toast, but what a fascinating acquisition nonetheless. A legitimate top of the rotation talent.

Reports say he’ll be ready for ST. I’m curious if he’s bringing that 97 mph fastball with him.

Soriano, Kikuchi, Detmers, Rodriguez coached by Mike Maddux. Not mad at it.

The makings of a nice rotation for sure if Grayson is able to pitch anywhere close to ‘24 levels.

Add a good left handed starter and pitching looks pretty solid. I would keep Detmers in the bullpen btw.
