Angels Beat Red Sox 6-1

Hey look, it is Sandy! I miss Patrick Sandoval and his magnificent beard. Those players end up in Boston all the time somehow. Hope things work out for him, he has had a rough year so far in Bawston. Still, I would like a win, even though that would be very hard given this pathetic Angels offense.

At least we had Detmers going for the Angels. He has become the vet Ace of the staff ever since Soriano got dealt, and is more likely to remain on the team now that Stan owns the Angels. Today he went 6 innings, giving up no runs on 1 hit, striking out 9 and walking 1. 6th straight Quality Start for Detmers. I am so proud.

Excellent

But hey, that shabby offense was able to score this time! 4 whole runs for Detmers! It has been literal months since he has gotten that much run support. And proof again that pitching wins are stupid and I hate them.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels scored first in a GIDP by Moore in the 2nd. 2 outs for a run is so pathetic, but it has been so bad we take that.

1-0 Angels

The Angels added on in the 3rd with a single by Siri.

2-0 Angels

And another by Grissom!

3-0 Angels!

And the defense was good as well as Siri makes the catch in the bottom of the 3rd!

NICE!

In the 5th, another GIDP run and this is a 4 run game!

4-0 Angels

It was the 2nd time the Angels have scored 4 runs in a game all month! Last time on Sat in that 6-1 win in Pitt. So of course after Detmers pitches 6 shutout innings that Fermin comes in for the 7th and gives up one immediately.

4-1 Angels

At least it wasn’t totally blown. Yet. A 3 run lead is scary with this bullpen in THIS park. Which is why it was great that Neto hit a 2 run BOMB in the 9th!

6-1 Angels

That makes it easier for Natera Jr to close this game and get the Angels their 55th win.

8 more wins to go to avoid 100 losses.

Upcoming

One more in Bawston tomorrow, and no game Thursday. Angels go to DC this weekend.

Zach Neto was looking like the Zach Neto of Christmas Past tonight. Hopefully he finishes hot.

And Reid Detmers looked like a top 10 pitcher. I wonder if the Cubs are kicking themselves now. Stupid fucks needed to go “all in” THIS year and they fumbled. Let’s extend this kid this offseason. He’s become consistent – the hallmark of any great pitcher.

After tonight’s performance there is probably at least 3 teams kicking themselves for not paying the trade price for Detmers.

Yeah, I thought that too.

Detmers is stone cold nails out there. I really didn’t see this happening. I was expecting decent journeyman and we get the great-grandson of Warren Spahn or something. Damn. Double Dog Damn.

He wanted analytics, he got analytics and we get the benefit (except for the tanking crowd).

Per ESPN, it is official. Angels, Giants, and Rockies have an “e” by their name.

Just going to memorialize here that on this night when Neto regressed to the mean he set in 2024 and 2025 and showed why he was such a marvelous fit for Fenway, Arjun Nimmala also hit his fourth home run in seven games in AA (at age 20). He’s probably one year away from his MLB debut, if the team is patient.

Meanwhile, Mookie is quietly aging on Dodger dirt, Emil Morales is 2+ years away, and 8 of LAD’s top 15 prospects are outfielders.

It’s so obvious what must be done this offseason.

I was surprised you are going for the primary value on another SS. Could we get a high value OF from them instead?

???

One trade is for an OF straight up, and the other is for two OFs and a high ceiling SS.

I think the Red Sox really messed up in not acquiring Neto even if they gave up a really great prospect. In the near term it could cost them a WS win or two.

Yep, Neto is built for that park. They clearly weren’t willing to give up Arias, which was probably the Angels demand, but I wonder if they offered the Adley package for Neto?

That’s a bit cryptic. Or perhaps not. Are you essentially saying that the Angels should trade Neto to the Dodgers for TBD OF prospect (or two) ???

Yes, I’ve written it a dozen times here in the past few months. The Dodgers are weakest in the middle infield, and deepest in the outfield – the deepest OF pipeline by far in the MLB. Meanwhile, the Angels are weakest in the OF, and Neto is their most valuable chip, but his peak value doesn’t align with their contention window.

This is a very obvious exchange, and there are packages where the Angels could get back both OFs and a SS replacement, or could trade Neto straight up for a player of comparable ceiling but with 6 years of control. The Dodgers have half a dozen outfielders they that they can’t even fit onto their 40 man at this point. Something has to give.

Mr. Watson notwithstanding, it’s a Holmesian mystery how the team suddenly arrived at pitching this good.

LTBU! Just say No to 💯

Appropriately in Fenway, Trout finally passes Boggs tonight I’m guessing on the all-time bWAR list, and into the Top 30 all-time position players.

Go Mike Go!
