LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Turn THAT page

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

The Angels were blown out yesterday. Yeah, turn the page, forget about THAT one yeesh.

But before the game, Yoan Moncada came back. As well as a call up for Sam Aldegheri. Victor Mederos and Chad Stevens are back in AAA.

Mike Trout is doing well since he has returned. That’s good.

Around Baseball

Can Mother Nature get an RBI? Apparently so, as a lightning strike caused a balk which scored a run.

The Blue Jays are first in the AL East and on a 10 game winning streak. Their best team since 2015. Can we have a 2015 season? It was our last winning season…

Yeah but the Marlins have won 11 road games in a row. That is more impressive.

As someone who loves speed, inside the park home runs are so cool. Like this one to lead off a game. Or this one to WALK OFF A GAME.

Fast fastballs are getting consistently too fast. The Brewers pitchers averaged 99.34 MPH on their fastballs yesterday. Remember when 20 years ago when 95 MPH was seen as FAST?

Sometimes a home ballpark is not good for you as a pitcher. Like these 19 SP. Someone save Luis Severino from Sacramento.

WTH was Ward thinking?

Is he Roger Dorn II?

That D@mn ball was catchable, though it still would’ve netted at least one run. Why did he go from LFer to spectator?

I think you should go out and turn over some cars and burn stuff to protest. This is important stuff!!

According to Angels announcers: Ward didn’t dive because he was too close to the wall, and it would’ve been dangerous to dive.

My take: just trade him.

I find it hard to believe that, in a world where the Royals just signed Dallas Keuchel to help them compete for a wild card, that no one out there will want to trade as their #14 ranked prospect for Tyler Anderson.

Michael Kopech is out for the year. Again. Man he was a beast of a starting pitcher prospect. He has NOT panned out. Pretty much always hurt, which then leads to sucking. I have yet to figure out how Arte and his puppets managed to screw him up with their teledoc med staff and minor league system full of cement playing fields and jail sandwiches.

It would be really funny if Drury came back and had a .900 OPS. Turns out he was just allergic to Shohei and his mom.

Perry is holding out for their 10th and 12th ranked prospect.

I predict Drury will do at least decent with the Halos.

Seriously. Did the pitching staff take a group trip to Juaquin’s High Risk Shrimp Shack for lunch before the game?

Just tooling around on the Trade Simulator and the problem that the Angels have is that all of their players with decent trade value (essentially Neto, Soriano, Schanuel, Moore, O’Hoppe, Detmers and Adell) are all important parts of the big league team and could not be traded without creating a new gaping hole.

Per the Sim the Angels basically have little of any significant value in the Minors (Dana is at 9.3 and Klassen 9.8 and Lugo 1.4). But if you traded Dana and Klassen that would weaken an already terrible minor league system.

It’s a tough position to be in. But ultimately the team needs a stronger minor league system if it has any chance of improving at the big league level through trades.

That is exactly what I was thinking before looking. We don’t have enough minor league value to trade for anything significant. Our minor league system is asset poor.

Most of the more fruitful scenarios require including Detmers and/or Ward in exchanges.

There are returns that bring back a couple nice pitching prospects and a position player for Detmers + Ward, but of course it’s probably selling low on Reid (even as his value has been increasing in the sim in recent weeks).

I suspect buyer-seller deadline trades confound the Trade Simulator a bit. “Buyers” routinely overpay for playoff-stretch pieces (see: Estevez, Carlos) and the Angels have several candidates if they choose to be sellers: Ward, Geefo, Kenley, plus any number of middle relievers.

I am curious to see what we can get for some of these guys. It won’t be any mind blowing 40 point prospects. But there are some 50 grade prospects out there that aren’t overvalued yet because they still have issues. It would be cool to get one. The rest will likely be 45 grade guys we have to hope get better.

But getting even that is an “overpay” for a guy like Kenley. But if the market demand gets high enough, yup, we may get that bump and that’d be great.

Agreed. There can be a bump if you have something that another team really needs like a closer. Jansen is an interesting one in this regard. You might get a decent mid-range young player or two for him.

Not sure why you think buyers overpay. I think the opposite is usually the case — the “seller” typically fails to get fair value for their outgoing (usually veteran) pieces.

Yeah? Did we fail to get “fair value” (Klassen, Aldegheri) for two months of Estevez? Did the White Sox when they fleeced us for No-Go-lito? I guess I made that statement based on real-world outcomes… which I admit aren’t what they used to be.

Fansince1971

Yes – my overall feeling is that if you are talking about selling a player who has a few months left before free agency (like Rengifo or Jansen) then the risk of not getting “fair value” is minimal. How can a team truly be “fleeced” for a player who is unlikely to be on the team in two-three months? By contrast, if the selling team gets back some young player or players with potential, that potential is worth parting ways with a short time player and the risk of not getting fair value is trivial since the player being traded is unlikely to be with the selling team beyond the season anyway.

Aldegheri ? Lol. You apparently didn’t watch him pitch last night. Dude has nothing. He’s horrible. As for Klassen, what has he done ? Nothing as well…And his ERA is 6.49 at Rocket City…. Not good.

As for Estevez he was pretty damn effective for us that season. And for the Phillies he converted 6 of 8 saves to the tune of a 2.57 ERA…. He is even better this year in Kansas City. As a matter of fact I wish we still had him…

So tell me again how the buyers “overpaid” … If you say it loud enough and with enough force some people may actually believe you.. Estevez is a top closer and we got some so called potential that does not look very promising.

So yeah, the sellers lost that one dude, and thus the buyers did NOT “overpay.”

this is our mid-season grade from ESPN. fair enough, we are overachieving.
Angels: B-
They’re just out of the wild-card picture while hanging around .500, so we give them a decent grade since that exceeds preseason expectations. It feels like a little bit of a mirage given their run differential — their record in one-run games (good) versus their record in blowout games (not good) — and various holes across the lineup and pitching staff.
But they’ve done two things to keep them in the race. One, they hit a lot of home runs. Two, they’re the only team in the majors to use just five starting pitchers. The rotation hasn’t been stellar, but it’s been stable.

This is all accurate and mentioned in various posts here for a while. I would add a third reason that is also mentioned and that is the bullpen which has been decent and which Perry deserves credit for although it took him a while to get there.

Like they did with last year’s bullpen?

We are not allowed to give Perry credit for anything cause 20% of that credit may trickle up to Arte and then he may feel happy for a minute. These thoughts are counter revolutionary and you most likely need a brief trip somewhere to have your thinking adjusted.

Wow. ESPN. Thoughts that aren’t stupid and took 3 seconds to come up with. They are right too. This B- season is a gift from a C- to D team. Unfortunately it’s kind of peak performance from the current guys. That’s great, good to see em do that. But we don’t have the PEAK that’ll raise AVERAGE and allow for contention yet.

Did they manage to not say something stupid about “of Anaheim”? That’d be a big step forward for them.

Plenty room of improvement from here

  • Mike Trout starts to hit like Mike Trout
  • Jorge Soler shows up
  • Defense has tons of room to get better
  • More offense from 3B/2B Giffy/Moore
  • Logan gets back on track.

It’s the Golidlocks scenario. And it counts on the good fortune of our pitching and Adell/Neto to continue. It could happen to get a better grade and improve from here

It’s a fair assessment. The healthy pitching staff is yuge. Any injuries and our utter lack of major league level pitching depth would be exposed and the win/loss record would regress to the preseason expectations.

I’d say the lineup has also been fairly stable healthwise. More plate appearances than expected from Trout, most of the core players on the field. Injuries to guys like Moncada were predictable and baked into the low contract cost.

I’m bummed about Silent C. I really hope he has a better second half. Finds his thing that does the stuff.

Halos/Pirates trade proposal:

Pirates receive: Ward, Neeeefo, Aldegheri, Klassen and Detmers

Halos receive: Skenes & Bryan Reynolds (All his contract obligation)

This is seriously hilarious. No offense intended. Did you happen to run this through the trade simulator?

Let’s take a bunch of our mid level guys and obtain arguably the best pitching talent in MLB.

Just ran through Simulator.

As expected, It’s completely lopsided. The Pirates would receive 48.10 in value and the Angels 96.50. Thus it is a 2x better deal for the Angels than the Pirates.

It would be even more lopsided if Reynolds and his salary were not a -38 in value.

Per the Sim, Skenes is one of the highest valued players in all of baseball at 134.5.

I’ve never done the sim before, so this is an honest and dumb question – does the sim account for taking on (bad) contracts, or is it just taking into account player “values” stat-wise? Because there is value in taking on bad contracts (Doyers did these multiple times) to get something more tangible in return.

It takes the contract into consideration, including not only the money but also things like NTCs. There will be an estimate of how likely or unlikely a player is to be traded at all. Players like Skenes are unlikely to be traded because of what they can do compared to what they cost.

Ironically, players like Rendon are also unlikely to be traded because of what they can do compared to what they cost.

It will allow you to sweeten the pot by adding money from one side to the other.

Yup. The sim is actually VERY contract heavy. A pre-arb player that is turning in even fairly good seasons is very valuable because he’s cheap. As soon as a guy gets a contract his value tanks. So there are some really good players, who are also on huge contracts, who actually have negative value because of the contract.

Trout was actually an example. Pre contract he was a huge value. As soon as he extended he was way less valuable.

You’re right about taking on a bad contract. THIS is why having Ohtani, and now Trout, entrenched at DH is an issue. We SHOULD take on a bad contract for a guy that can still kind of hit and park him at DH…. but get some youth in the deal too. But we can’t.

Yeah, I was just hopeful sketching, but Skenes is going to be traded this season or next. The Blew crew is reportedly burning up Pittsburgh’s phone.

Pittsburgh is a poorly run team in a great baseball city-They’ve made some very bad trades and decisions in the past.

Newman > Aldegheri????

Newman?

That beating was just one game, just like the recent wins were isolated moments. The team is no worse than it was at the start of the season, and the wins didn’t mean the team was better than expected. This team still has flaws, but they often play hard and show excitement. It’s fun to puff on hope, watch the team play, and dream of what could be—win or lose.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

Yup. To my Lylin Eyes this squad is better than past squads… even, GASP, Ohtani era squads. They just aren’t GOOD yet. But at least they are moving that way and we root for a team with the general finances to not feel like all these guys will be gone in three years and we can’t sign any FAs to help them.

Though wouldn’t it be cool if the team lost a ton of money and we couldn’t keep or add anyone? That should show Arte that we aren’t actually happy the way he thinks we are. Sure, we’ve sucked for ten years. But if we suck for ANOTHER ten then we’ll really show him, making us the winners. Let’s focus all our thoughts and efforts on that…..
