Angels lose to the rain, and the Yankees

No team have ever swept both the Dodgers and Yankees in the same season. The Angels were on verge of history of doing so. All they had to do was win today. So what pitcher was up against this Yankee lineup? Tyler Anderson. ODD year Tyler Anderson. OH NO. Anderson went 6 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits, striking out 4 and walking 2.

Yes, I will keep saying it, Anderson is good in even years, bad in odd years. We have proof and people keep denying it. His 2 All Star years? 2022 and 2024. His 3 worst years? 2023, 2021, 2019. So far, his 2025 looks more like his 2023 than his 2024, or 2022 for that matter.

Sigh…

Highlighted Recap

Mike Trout got things going with his 390th career home run in the first!

1-0 Angels

Too bad the Yankees tied it up immediately

1-1

Not to fear, Jo Adell is here!

2-1 Angels

WAIT! Rain Delay, put tarp on.

For 4 minutes
Very suspicious.

And Odd Year Anderson is here as well, giving up a home run in the 2nd.

3-2 Yankees

Make that 2.

4-2 Yankees

The Angels did get closer in the 6th thanks to Taylor Ward’s 19th home run of the year.

4-3 Yankees

Sam Bachman came in for the 7th and in his 2nd game back, gave up the first run by an Angels RP this series.

5-3 Yankees

And in the bottom of the 8th, rain delay again! Because we had one yes, but what about 2nd rain delay?

WATER IS FALLING FROM THE SKY!

And that is when things fell apart. When play resumed, the Yankees scored again.

6-3 Yankees

And AGAIN

7-3 Yankees

Down 4 going into the top of the 9th, the Angels had to have a miracle to pull this out. They couldn’t. Angels lose, fail to sweep the MFY.

🙁

Upcoming

The Angels return home for 9 games. Astros, Red Sox, and Nats.

For those who keep putting Rengifo in the lineup . . .

Blum 💣

Liam Doyle (who’s been linked to the Angels a lot at No. 2) said he met with the Angels for an hour yesterday.

He said they presented some plans for him, should they draft him. Doyle said it went well.

Not sure if that’s worth reading into, but passing along regardless.

Yep. They will likely meet with more guys. But if they are talking then they are interested. FKSHITPISS

It’s basically what the Draft Combine is for – connecting draft-eligible players with MLB teams. Many prospects are interviewed over several days.

Another Angels site reported Hernandez was also thoroughly interviewed in recent weeks.

Would be a shame if they did not talk with a local Corona player, he has to be on the short list

I’m sure they’re vetting 7-8 guys robustly, plus speaking with a lot of later round candidates. Roughly 75% of the BA top 500 are in attendance.

TT, I know haha.

Just doing my best to rile up the site. Of course Perry and staff are vetting numerous prospects.

That umpire was atrocious and gave Anderson no use of the edges of the zone.

Would be excited if somehow they get to 40-42 at the halfway mark if the season, it will be tough. The June schedule and the May traveling was a challenge. July and August offer better hopes if they can avoid the dog days this year. Honestly O’Hoppe of all the players needs to man up. He needs to step it up on both parts of the game. He went from 1 WAR to negative WAR player. I’m rooting for them to have 55 wins at the end of July. They have 35 between now and then to get 19 wins.

Can’t complain about not sweeping.

Now, let’s hurt the @SStros and the RedSux at home.

Go Halos!

Lineup needs tweaking.

Trout DH
Schanuel 1B
Neto SS
Ward LF
Adell CF
Soler RF
O’Hoppe C
Rengifo 3B
Moore 2B

When Moncada and Taylor get back, we should have Wade, Newman, and Kingery compete in some sort of humiliatingly trivial game (balloon animal making contest?) to determine who gets to stay.

Thinking about lineup as well Pineapple. Mine has some similarities but some differences, mainly that I like Schanuel at lead-off with his high OBP and Trout 2nd. I also like keeping Jo in the lower third of order to strengthen that part of the lineup … and also to keep extra pressure off of him. He has been doing well in that slot and I don’t want to mess with him..

Here is mine :

Schanuel
Trout
Neto
Ward
Soler
O’Hoppe
Adell
Rengifo
Moore

Moncada and Taylor are coming back? Or are just saying that and it’s weeks away?

The latter. Neither players’ return is imminent from what I know. Moncada still has knee soreness and Taylor went on the 10-day with a fractured hand 9 days ago.

Long time advocate for Trout at lead off but with the frail lower body, 5 hole. I’d just keep Neto at the 1.

I’m still not sold on Bachman’s fastball – it can be awfully straight, and the control comes and goes. Willing to give it some innings, but he doesn’t scream shutdown reliever to me.

Would like to see more culling of the bullpen. Natera Jr and Fermin deserve call ups, and would really like to see someone like Hurtado tested as a single inning guy.

Wade Jr is a total miss. Would much rather see Campero or Lugo on the bench.

Wade Jr does not impress me either…. And I do feel Fermin should be up here.

Fermin > Nerris…

Wade looked like a dear in headlights in RF on the liner today, maybe should have kept Mickey Moniak over Tim Anderson for depth

Fermin, Natera, and Jared Southard too, maybe? Neris and Brogdon should be the obvious choices to be jettisoned.

Not personally sold on Southard yet. Saw him cough up too many leads at Rocket City last year, but we’ll see in time.

Bachman – below average control, tries to blow the ball past players and has health issues. This was the scouting report.

Natera Jr. got a nice write-up in MLB.com, as a prospect looking to be promoted:

Angels: Samy Natera Jr., LHP (No. 16)

The lefty reliever missed nearly all of last year with an elbow sprain, but he opened some eyes with a dozen Arizona Fall League innings last fall. The ERA has been a bit inflated in May and June during his first taste of Double-A, but he’s still striking out 12.8 per nine and keeping Southern League hitters to a .191 batting average. He’s 25 and the Angels like pushing prospects up the ladder, so why not see how his stuff plays at least in Triple-A with an eye towards finishing the season in Los Angeles.

If you had told me last week you that the Angels would finish this road trip 3 – 4, and it’s not because they would win the orioles series end lose to the Yankees but the other way around, I would have thought you’re insane. But that’s baseball for you

36-38
9-game homestand vs. HOU, BOS, WAS

Can the boys get to 42-41 or better before we hit July?

I think 6-3 is a stretch because I think Houston will take at least 2 games if not sweep… That means we’d have to go 5-1 against Boston and Washington which ain’t gonna happen.

Oh you and your absolutes, Frosty 🙂.

The pitching matchups against BOS and WAS look good for us, except for TA vs. Crochet.

Washington plays up to their competition level so they will beat us at least one time… and Boston has been hotter than a firecracker ; I hate to say it but Boston easily could take two games from us… I think a 4-5 homestand (going 2-4 against Hou and Bos) is the most likely scenario.

It’s a glitch. He can’t say or type the words “maybe” or “I think” or “looks to me”. Stuff like that leads to people doubting your bonerfides.

More than anything, we will remember this trip as the one CMo debuted in.
we perhaps have found a 2bman.

the stats may not be convincing, but he passes the eye test. This is just the start.
