The Professor Schools NY Postgame

Kyle Hendricks was masterful in New York tonight. He pumped his high 80s heater past the Bronx Bombers and mixed in his changeup to perfection. On the night he pitched like a crafty veteran and put up 6 shutout innings including 9 strikeouts. He only walked one hitter and allowed a measly 4 hits.

When your starter gives up 0 runs, the offense doesn’t need to do a ton. It did enough to stake Hendricks to a 3-0 lead when he left then added a 4th run in the top of the 7th.

Luis Rengifo continues to increase his trade value (which was zero a couple of weeks ago). He singled in Logan O’Hoppe to drive in the game’s first run in the top of the 2nd inning.

Taylor Ward is also increasing his trade value. He punched in two more runs the following inning.

Nolan Schanuel then drove in Rengifo in the top of the 7th to extend the lead to 4-0.

The team held on for the win with Ryan Zeferjahn and Reid Detmers pitching clean innings and Hunter Strickland closing it out. That’s two nights in a row for Hunter.

4-0 shutout victory in NY! That makes 20 consecutive scoreless innings by Angels pitchers.

Two up, two down in NY. Let’s hope for a series win tomorrow.

Well damn. Hope this team can make things interesting instead of falling apart the last month and a half of the season like they did last year.

How about them Angels?
Got swept by an under 0.500 Baltimore team.
Then, shuts out Yankees, on the road, in the first 2 games of this 4-game series?!

For Wednesday,
For his career, Yarbrough is 5-3, with 4.74 ERA, vs the Angels.

Kochanowicz has faced the Yankees just once (in May), pitching 6-2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs, in a loss.

If the Angels were going to beat the Yankees, their best bet was game 1 (or game 2) in this series, and Angels did just that.
Now comes the hard part – trying to beat Yarbrough and Rodon.

Praying for a win on Wednesday.

Not bad from a Bi-Polar rebuilding team.

Yarbrough and Rodon should just get back to NASCAR and sculpting, respectively.

Not that I, of all people, would meander over to a certain Yankees fan site, but they may be calling for Boone to be fired, with a sprinkle of Steinbrenner doesn’t want to do what it takes to win, but I’m sure later it will shift to include Cashman as the root of all problems. But I’m just guessing here.

Well, just as soon as I write these guys off again, they turn brilliant. I guess this is an artifact of letting the kids play.

Pretty cool results, perhaps due to hitting them at the right time but who cares.

My two cents: These two games may be the best two games the Angels have played this season, at least up there with the sweep of the Dodgers in the ravine. The Professor reminded me of Greg Maddox tonight, killing them softly with his craftiness. 20 consecutive shutout innings in the Bronx, very impressive.

Even though our pitchers have been great this series there is a little bit of luck as well — the Yankees bats have hit a big time slump, and this goes back to the beginning of the Boston series where they got swept….

But of course they are hungry and angry and we beat them anyways. There is something to be said for that. Last night was a truly gutsy win, and I think we carried that momentum into today.

I will say – the bats don’t look great. O’Hoppe looks lost, and aside from Schanuel they are all a bit underwhelming these days.

It hurts to watch Soler bat – takes pitches right down the middle, then flails at pitches low and away, pitches that would hit a left-handed batter.

We’re stuck with him for 2025 and 2026.
I cannot imagine any team that wants a player with a 0.207 BA, (-)0.5 WAR, striking out 33% of the time. He does have 8 HR, 26 RBI in 67 games.

For someone signed essentially as a DH, that hurts. Are there other RF we could target (now or in future). Wade hasn’t made a dent, and I am not yet convinced by the ‘kids’ we have as options (Paris, Lugo).

Yeah, it hurts to have such an important person/role in the batting order be such a black hole in the offensive lineup. If not for our spectacular pitching the last couple of nights Soler’s huge failure would be amplified…

You can’t go on long having your number 4 or 5 hitter just being useless… He has failed in many, many important RISP situations recently, especially in the Baltimore series..

He needs to at least draw walks or hit a single now and then. How much longer will we give Soler before he is moved down in the order or even worse ?

Knowing this org he’ll be allowed to flail and fail for quite some time. Shrug.

Trout is hitting .316 since returning from the IL (said the broadcast). Is that underwhelming?

Neto is also batting .300 in June and Adell has a SLG at .600. So, not everyone, I would say.

That was an impressive pitching performance. KH had them off balance all night. I was very against bringing him in – but that was a master class on pitching that all of the young guys could learn from.

I enjoyed that game. And good for him.

Great game for Hendricks, been a bargain for us this year. His old arm still has enough to keep some hitters off balance. Best part about him he grew up a local Angel fan and wanted to come here.

For the many disappointments so far this team has done a great job of avoiding dropping into the abyss when things start to slide like the past 10 years. Been pretty sweet
