Angels Sweep, Dodgers Weep

Zach Neto homered to lead off today’s game. 1-0 Angels.

Nolan Schanuel grounded out and Tony Gonsolin started bleeding on his throwing hand. After a bandaid was applied, he walked Yoan Moncada. Taylor Ward hit a home run to make it 3-0 Angels.

Jorge Soler grounded out. Travis d’Arnaud walked. Matthew Lugo struck out swinging to end the Angels’ first.

Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts both hit long fly outs. Will Smith walked but Freddie Freeman struck out swinging.

The Angels went three up three down in the top of the second. The Dodgers followed suit. Nolan Schanuel walked and Yoan Moncada singled to put men at first and second with no outs for Taylor Ward. Ward flied out and Soler struck out. Travis d’Arnaud singled to score Nolan Schanuel. 4-0 Angels.

In the bottom of the third, Shohei Ohtani managed a hit to break up the no-hitter. The inning still ended at 4-0 Angels.

There was no further scoring until the bottom of the fifth inning when a walk, a throwing error by d”Arnaud, and a hit resulted in an unearned Dodger run. 4-1 Angels. Will Smith walked to bring up Freddie Freemen with the bases loaded and two outs. Freeman hit an easy fly ball to left to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Yusei Kikuchi was injured covering first and had to leave the game. Tommy Edman was out on the play. Brock Burke came in to pitch.

In the bottom of the seventh, Shaun Anderson came in to replace Brock Burke with two men on and two outs. Will Smith homered to tie the game. 4-4 tie.

Travis d’Arnaud homered to left to make it 5-4 Angels in the eighth.

That score stood as the Angels began the top of the ninth inning. Back to back singles by Neto and Schanuel put men at first and third with no outs for Yoan Moncada, who hit into an RBI double play. 6-4 Angels.

Taylor Ward struck out. Shaun Anderson then retired the Dodgers in order, including striking out Shohei Ohtani to end the game. Angels win. Angels sweep!

I’ll add it now since it doesn’t look like anyone was able to find it.

I thought he was DFA. Was he reclaimed off waivers?

I’m thinking if Lugo’s maintains a good level of production, it will mean Paris or Adell will be gone one way or the ‘tother-Of course, that would put Paris @ AAA.

Providing no one else gets hurt. Is Paris a better back up option than Newman (providing Moncada is back)?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

No. Newman’s way below his career norm. Paris is at his career norm plus a quick power surge. Anderson is more likely to go away than Newman. Paris needs to go to AAA soon. Not right away, but by June maybe? Maybe when Trout gets back?

Just looking at his stats, Newman hasn’t been terribly consistent in his career. He was good last year, but he hasn’t been good this year. Maybe he has a better chance to bounce back – but at 31 do we prefer to chance that than to give Paris ABs?

Normally I would say, let the kids play but Paris whiff rate is crazy. I don’t have high hopes, contact was also an issue in the minors. I bought into the spring hype about his new stance enough to give him some rope but after 114 ABs, time has come to step aside.

Kikuchi caught the condition referred to as Weaverism while with Angels. If he doesn’t throw a shutout or give just one run deep into a game, he nets a no-decision or a loss.

Man… got to go to a local carnival with the wife. My six-year-old saw a friend from kindergarten—impromptu playdate that turned into a beer garden date with the wife, where they had a TV showing the Halo game. Got to watch the Halos sweep the hated team up the 5 for the first time in 15 years. Today was a good day..

It’s too bad we DFAed Shufflebot. We really could use him today.

poor Kikuchi. Still no Ws! Anyway, I was busy all day but got excited when I finally could check in and saw 3 straight! Now that’s a real streak! I was in a situation where I couldn’t root on the lads, pitch by pitch, but the rest of you did a great job!

Effing, righteously cool we swept the Doyers in the Latrine!

The Q that gnaws at me – at a lot of us is – was this a fluke? Is the highlight of what will be another cellar-dwelling year? Or are we suddenly looking like a better team…and ARE a better team?

Saw the Doyers fairly unceremoniously DFA’d Austin Barnes and now Chris Taylor. They were/are riding atop the NL, despite a high IL toll. It’s like they’re run by ruthless CEOs. Is karma some sorta actual thing here?

BTW: caught the games via Doyers feed. The most nauseating homer is Joe Davis, a real galling front-runner. It was awesome to hear him call Neto’s and Ward’s 1st-inning homers today. He was so ready for his boss’s team to at least salvage one win over the lowly Angels. He calls them, but the subtext was “What the hell is going on here?”

Then the Doyers tied it 4-4. Then d’Arnaud homers in the 8th: schweeet listening to that a-hole be let down. He sounded like the bully who gets punched in the face, finally, and then runs away, ‘cuz he’s a effing pussy in reality.

I have ZERO stats to back this up, but it just feels like the Angels tend to play to their competition. If true, this is a fluke, which is how I would lean regardless of the stats.

Well, I understand why you say it seems that way, but it is not the case. In actuality the Angels are only 12-15 against teams that are over .500 on the season. And without the just completed sweep of the Dodgers that record would be alot worse. So, just a few days ago we were quite bad against good teams.

As for weak opponents the Angels are only 6-6 against teams under .500. So, either way not very good.

No, I’m blanking on his name. Good guy but was really only a Ohtani fan so he followed him to the Doyers.

Drafted in the 25th round of the 1977 draft. Had a .092 WHIP in 1983. Could have had him but Perry is so stupid. Good GAWD! 💪 Also relievers don’t matter.

Yup. I was like ‘We can’t REALLY sweep these guys….. can we?” Especially because we just plain didn’t play all that well. But the gods favored us this weekend. I’ll take it and smile.

Even though he poached a win, the power of Shaun’s Magic Mullet cannot be overstated. . He dominated the Doyers the last 2 innings.

Amazing.

Was following along at the fair and turned the game on when Ward struck out to end the 7th, then kept it on until they gave up the game tying Hr, turned it back off and then they immediately take the lead back and win.

I was stuck in traffic almost the whole game. 3rd-9thinnings. Had my AC. Angels on the radio. My Iced tea and a pineapple shake from Cal Taco. Didn’t even mind the gridlock.
