NCAA Top Prospects week #12

This post will be a little bit different from all the weeks prior. It’s just missing one thing, Jace Laviolette. He is still having a decent year, but I thought it was time to enter a different name into the conversation.

That name is Kade Snell from Alabama. He is having an excellent year, yet a quiet one. He leads the SEC in batting average at .390, and is third in hits in the SEC with 73. He also has 10 longballs to go along with those great stats. His SLG is also .631, along with a 1.113 OPS. Here is how his weekend went. Friday, he was 1-3 with a walk, Sunday, 2-4 with a BB and a K, and Saturday, 1-2. I figured since he’s having such a good year, he would be cool to include. Oh, I forgot to mention, he has only struck out 14 times this year, in 187 ABs.

Now, for a more familiar face, Jamie Arnold. I’ve been covering Arnold for a while now, and one thing that I’ve noticed is that even his not-so-great outings are still decent/good outings that put his team in a good position to win the game. To consider this start mediocre for him feels borderline criminal, but that just speaks to how good he is. His weekend Stats: 6IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 BB, and 5 Ks. Everyone knows giving up only one run through six innings pitched is good, but it was the fact that he had 3 walks and only 5 Ks. It’s crazy that I have to say that it’s not one of his better outings because that’s the standard he’s set for himself.

Liam Doyle had a very short start. I was very confused about why he only threw an inning. I later looked it up and found out that he was ejected from the game. In my opinion, what he did was nowhere near close enough to get him ejected. There was a run down between third and home, and when Liam tagged the runner out at the plate, he shoved his chest a little. It wasn’t very aggressive and not hard enough to where he should’ve been tossed. His Inning went like this: 1 hit, 2 runs, a walk, and 2 Ks. A very interesting day to say the least

Now for another new name, who I think will go in the top 10 this year, Kade Anderson from LSU. This Guy is legit. He is having a great sophomore campaign. Posting a 3.66 ERA, which is a tad bit on the higher side, but he strikes out a ton of guys and doesn’t walk very many. His K-to-Walk ratio is pretty impressive, 124 strikeouts to just 20 Walks. He does a very good job of getting swings and misses and I think he will serve a team very well in the future.

Stay tuned for weekly updates on the best players in college!

Three prominent draft mocks dropped this week – two with the Angels taking Doyle, one with Arquette. (My own predictions for the Angels to date, based on past proclivities.)

Maybe Doyle beats the odds – the FB really is special, but the injury red flags still haunt me. Arquette is a bat I really think would go 15-20 in a more typical draft class.

Reading beyond the draft mock selections (largely guesses at the moment), the commentaries do suggest that they are looking at all the top college arms (Arnold, Doyle, Witherspoon, Anderson, Bremner), plus Arquette and LaViolette, and Law says they are in on Seth Hernandez as well. I haven’t read them connected to any of the high school shortstops though, which may not mean anything, but also seems intuitively correct.

Just don’t get that LaViolette is still in the picture. If you’re going to dive deep, and just grab the big CF you’re certain is not going to be there at pick #47, just go with Mason Neville. Same risk profile as LaViolette, but much improved contact and chase #s vs 2024.

Didn’t have Kade Snell on my midweek bingo card. 🙂

Redshirt senior, will be 23 at draft time, DH without a position. Normally a day three type, or a UDFA. Didn’t make the last BA 400 rankings. But maybe someone takes a flyer in the later rounds?

Seth or death!

Assuming Holliday goes #1, just draft Seth Hernandez. This is not a hard decision

Sounds like the right formula

I’d like to see a non-catcher position player picked with the Angels overall #2 slot. But, Holliday looks to be the first pick and it seems from that point down there’s a lot of pitchers that appear to be the top predicted picks over position players..

There’s absolutely no certainty that Holliday is the first pick. The Nats are looking at 8-10 possibilities at the moment – that’s how unusually unsettled the boards are at the moment.

Holliday, Arnold, Doyle are my picks but I’d ride with Hernandez too. But for trAdition sakes, they will get “creative” and go a bit out of the box, so I and a host of others will freak out when they pick a “Top Ten guy” – this anger will be misplaced and chances are who we pick will work out in the end just as well as those top4 consensus guys do.

The whole key is that 2nd round pick. If the pick is right, we likely will have a great draft, but if that one flames out and Mr #2 doesn’t pan out, this organization will be in for much darker times.

Tennessee players in general acted like asshats this series. That said, I also was a little surprised at the quick hook for Doyle.

All I know is the more I watch college baseball the more I want to land a CBA pick and add talent in this draft. This class supposedly lacks on the top end, but the depth of the top 50 or so looks really nice to me and I’d prefer to snag three of them rather than 2.

Really seems like the Angels should be well-positioned to trade with Detroit or Seattle at #34-35, but many of their tradeable assets are tanking badly at the moment.
