LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Worse than Detroit

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

Angels lost yesterday in Detroit. The one place that Cleveland likes to boast being better than. Being worse than the Detroit Tigers really sucks.

Maybe they should allow position players to pitch more as the Angels position players have a better ERA than this bullpen. Too bad Manfred doesn’t allow this.

Detmers has been doing well in SLC. He may be fixed again after all.

Around Baseball

Last time each team had a 1.000 OPS player. Pujols having the last great St. Louis Season and none with the Angels really stings.

Speaking of OPS, here is the chart for every team in August. Angels only 27th.

Amazon isn’t bailing out Diamond Sports group after all. They, and Bally Sports, which they own, may now finally die forever now.

Rich Hill is back! He is so old that his new Pitching Coach is younger than him!

Astros get Jason Heyward from the Dodgers after he was let go. Ew.

Who will win AL ROY? One of these guys. At least Nolan may get some votes this year?

Danny Jansen playing the same game on both teams due to some shenanigans has broken Baseball Reference.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

In all seriousness, I think Ward leads the league in “Oopsie” extra base hits in his fielding range.

BTW, I do not hate Ward.

In the insult to injury department:

The other day when the Halos almost go no-hit, but Ward went yard in the 9th to breakit up. After the game Ward was quoted as saying about pitcher who almost no-hit the Angels, (Paraphrased) “He was very hittable.”

OMG Ward WTH is wrong with you?

From the reddit link about bb-ref:

The destruction however might be limited merely to the American League East

I fail to see the problem here.

We’re wasting the worst years of Rendon’s career.

I nominate the entire Halos OF for the 2024 Iron Gove awards.

WTH was that Little League display of incompetent fielding?

Yes, I know, “TrAdition”

Losing baseball is bad enough, but the Bad news Bears routine in the OF is just torture.

Couple of quick highlights:

“ Let that sink in: the team with the highest-paid third baseman in baseball since 2020 has also used the most total third basemen over that time.

Teams like the Braves, Guardians and Astros have only used 12, 13 and 14, respectively. That’s because they have Austin Riley, José Ramirez and Alex Bregman. That is what the Angels thought they had in Rendon.”

And

“ The replacements haven’t worked. Of the 27 names listed below, 14 have not played a big league game since leaving the Angels.”

So, what you’re saying is that Rendon is very generous giving other players a last gasp chance at experience before their careers end?

That’s what I got out of it, anyone else?

It’s a shame — but many teams have these issues. Nationals had Strassberg, worst ever contract. Stanton for the Yankees has been a lousy deal. DeGrom for Texas. Many, many others.

The agents have been leveraging long-term deals ever since Pedro Martinez and others. The illogic has been you need to sign the guy for more money and more years than is reasonable or he signs elsewhere. Owners have been doing this for 15 years or more.

Finally, they might stop doing this generally — although it’s doubtful. Feel free to guess whose contract with be the next albatross either here or elsewhere.

You are correct. When other competitive teams hand out bad contracts, they eat them and move on. In Anaheim, Arturo uses them as an excuse to not sign other players. That’s why good teams are able to win, and we are not.

At last check nobody held a gun to ownership and GMs heads to force signing players who could no longer perform

So you’re saying we’re good at wasting payroll?

Rendon looked like a good signing at the time, but yeah, what a waste.
I think more of an organizational problem is how Arte couldn’t even get close to a replacement.

54W-78L…we’re not very good!!

30 left and we got to go 14W-16L.

To be better than worst ever 1968.

Anybody got odds on us doing that?

I think 1980 was worse, but even getting 11 more wins this season looks like a huge task.

My standard is a full 162 game season

1980 was 160 games but yes for W/L%..

The Angels won 73 games two years in a row with Ohtani posting essentially 10 WAR seasons. Ohtani left basically unreplaced. If you believe in advanced statistics, there was some predictability to this.

If you go back to the predictions discussion there are a lot of 65 to 68 wins listed. We saw it coming despite what Perry said

The lack of quality starting pitching made it an easy call

At the start of the season, I thought the team could win 75-76 games and even by the end of July, it didn’t seem that farfetched. But after going 7-17 since, I’d say it’s likely the Angels have their first 100 loss season. Hope we get a good draft pick next year out of this, but with the lottery Perry might be looking at a sixth or seventh pick.

Hopium and what is really wonderful about baseball.
The baseball team always starts the season with a glimmer of hope, fueled by a few promising players and the belief that this year could be different. However, as the season progresses, their flaws become apparent, and despite moments of brilliance, they inevitably slide into the bottom third of the standings. It’s a familiar story for the fans—each year begins with optimism, only to end in disappointment as the team’s potential goes unrealized, leaving them to wonder when things will finally turn around.

the highlight from my prediction:

There’ll be some happy moments. We’ll see the shufflebot a couple of times this year. But it’s going to be a long, long season. I’m predicting 65-97 with our win ceiling being 70 and our floor 52. Yes, 52-110 is not out of the question.
