Baseball on a Sunday morning is better than on a weekday morning. I am still sure that we would prefer them not to happen though. Oh well, at least we are done with Boston now. Where the Red Sox play. Yet the Angels played the Yellow Sox instead? It was a weird day.
Tyler Anderson looked to get a 3rd good start to start his year. Instead, he went 4 and a third innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits, striking out 4 and walking 3. After two straight 7 inning starts, he couldn’t make 5.
And the offense was missing Nolan after what happened yesterday. Understandable. Which means that Aaron Hicks has to pull his weight. Because Mickey Moniak cannot ever get a chance to play. Seriously, why is he still starting?
Highlighted Recap
The Red Yellow Sox scored in the first inning thanks to Anderson giving up a home run.
Make that 2.
But Drury hit one of his own in the 2nd! The 9,000th home run in Angels History!
Then in the 3rd, Rengifo got a run across with a ball in play. Small Ball.
Too bad Boston took it back in the 5th.
It could have been worse, but Mike Trout made a great catch.
Too bad Jose Suarez came in and made it worse.
Ughhhhh…
They did make it closer in the 8th, as a Trout triple and a Ward groundout got a run back.
Kenley Jansen came in to shut down the Angels in the 9th. He was wild. Very. Even hitting Logan in the helmet (glancing, thankfully.) Moniak then got a pinch hit single. Neto walked. It was a blow up by Jansen and Rendon was up. Will he pull through this time?
But it was not enough, Rengifo struck out. Trout then struck out and the Angels lost vs the Yellow Sox 5-4. But no more Boston this year! So there is that at least.
Upcoming
The Angels have a losing record now. That sucks. They go to Tampa Bay next. That is worse. But, we are having a CTPG meetup at Angel Stadium on 4/27. That’s good. Sign ups end at midnight tonight.
Those tweetie bird uniforms make the series loss much worse.
most of the homers were piped 0-2 pitches… WTF?
This is is on Washington going with Suarez, channeling Nevin. Same crap, different year.
Let’s not let the offense off the hook. The Angels continue to be horrible in RISP situations. This offense has been pathetic this year in terms of missing opportunities and leaving runners on bases — in 2024 the LOBster fest continues !
As great as it was to see Drury hit that solo HR early to get us back in the game, he failed big time in the games biggest moment. People tend to look at the 8th and 9th and focus on those innings when reviewing the outcome of a 1 run game. But they often miss the fact that the pivotal moment comes earlier… in this case it was Drury’s AB in the top of the 5th with runners on 1st and 3rd and only one out. He could have, and I suggest SHOULD have at least tied the game there. You need to get that runner in from 3rd by hook or by crook; a ground out to 2nd, a fly ball to CF or RF, any number of things would have worked there. Sure, a hit would have been great and might have turned into a big inning which gave us the lead. But you HAVE TO at least tie it up there. That was the turning point in the game.
And as so often happens, after a missed chance the other team comes back the next half inning and adds on or scroes more, which Boston did. The Angels have to get alot better in executing in these types of moments. It has to become a point of emphasis for Washington and staff. Wash has focused on defense and it has helped us in that area… He needs to ALSO focus on RISP execution and it would hopefully change a longstanding, negative pattern.
Hey gosh gee whiz no FAIR, mom! CLE’s Tyler (Beede) got the win today and Tampa Bay’s Tyler (Alexander) won his game, too. Our Tyler was the bad one. What gives, ma?
Doyers got the best Tyler now, prolly. And he starts tomorrow for ’em.
Angels had Tyler Wade and finally dumped him. They had a pretty good SP named Tyler, but he…got hooked on opiates and died. Dark-ass jit, man.
My point: MLB’s influx of Tylers continues unabated. A lot like the NBA’s epidemic of Jalens.
Everyone in MLB is named either Tyler or Austin, including a guy named Tyler Austin. I don’t believe there are any Austin Tylers, but I’m too GA to look it up.
Today and Wednesday nights’ games could easily have went the Halos’ way. Just need a little better pitching performance. Good to see some of our low avg hitters starting to heat up a little bit (Moniak 286 last 7; Hicks 250 last 7; Rendon 379 last 7).
This is the epitome of the Halos since 2014. Every time Suarez pitches, it feels like a kick in the nuts.
I thought the Halos would only win six games in their first 25 games. They’re way ahead of what I expected. I don’t get the bitching when we all knew what to expect.
“Welcome to the cesspool, it’s worse here everyday. You learn to live like an animal
In the jungle where we play”
TrAdition!
Biggest offseason signing by Perry has embraced the tradition:
Just 4 pitches? TrAdition. I wonder if he will make a big league appearance by September.
Sigh.
Chances he pulls a Madson and never pitches?
*For us that is.
MLB saves leader in year 4.
58%?
Man, the next 26 games are going to be pretty tough.
The next 147 are going to tough.
At least we aren’t sitting here bitching about Snell’s slow start, eh?
Silver linings…
We have Schanuel, Neto, Canning, and Sandoval to take our minds off of the bullet we dodged with Snell 🙂
Speaking of bullets
Silver Bulllet is a banger of a werewolf movie.
Carry on.
Ninth inning down by 1 with 1 out and 2 runners in scoring position.
Guy making $4.4m strikes out.
Up next a guy making $35.45m strikes out to end the game.
I’m old enough to remember being excited to see Mike Trout up with the game on the line.
Wholeheartedly disagree. Trout got us back in the game with the triple.
I think the implication was an unrealistic expectation that given his salary, Trout can defy the ebb and flow of a baseball game at the exact time fans want him to.
Did you see the meme about Trout and solo HRs. Maybe bc he doesn’t hit them with RISP.
So does the current AL HR leader Tyler O’Neill. Seven HRs, all solos
Love the guy but he chokes under pressure.
We don’t really know because he has only been in the playoffs once.
Bases loaded and no one out in the ninth. Sacrifice fly to make it second and third with one out. Down one run. Rengifo cannot put the ball in play. And Trout doesn’t get the two out hit. It’s a shame. Rengifo has to make contact in that circumstance.
Rengifo simply has no business hitting at the top of the order, but it’s not like there’s a bunch of good candidates. At this point, I just don’t expect consistent clutch hitting from Trout.
Mediocre start, a godawful relief inning and the usual w/RISP.
The exact product we’ve been watching for years now.
Anderson pitched well enough for us to win. We had some good opportunites to get that other run and didn’t do it. If we really did not have any other options than Suarez today in a 1 run game then Perry should be fired.
Actually the problem lies in JH Sr bringing in Suarez in the first place.
3 runs in 4 innings is a mediocre start no matter how you want to slice it.
Did the offense and pen not come thru? Yup. Another team effort.
Even Curacao can K Trout to end a game
The Rangers lost again, we are still 0.5 games back.
We suck lol
Rendon, Rengifo, Trout. Who would have guessed it would be Rendon who did (part of) the job?
The kids did well that inning – O’Hoppe, Moniak, Neto. Much more than you can say for the vets.
That K by Rengifo hurt. Anything that would have put the ball in play there would have done the trick
As would a ground ball single from Trout.
We should just blame Rendon for not getting 2 bags!
SO CLOSE FAQ
All Rengifo needed to do was hit a ground ball to 2nd.
Exactly. Such a bad chase. Especially for a pitcher who was wild
All Washington needed to do was never bring in Suarez unless it’s mop up duty time.
Nevin 2.0.
1 for 10 with RISP today
Nothing new there. It’s like saying the sky is blue.
